Abstract

A torsional vibration damper 7 for a clutch plate of a motor vehicle has a main damper arrangement (13, Fig. 2) and a preliminary damper arrangement 15. The main damper arrangement has side discs 17 rigidly connected together by rivets 19 and coupled to a central disc 27 in an angularly resilient manner through first spring elements (29). The preliminary damper arrangement 15 is axially to one side of the main damper arrangement and has components 61, 65 connected in an angularly resilient manner through second spring elements (63). The component 61 has a number of circumferentially spaced recesses 79 in which the setting heads 77 of the rivets 19 engage. The setting heads 77 have flattened portions 81 engaging corresponding flat side faces in the recesses 79. On closing of the closing heads 89 of the rivets 19 the setting heads 77 are plastically deformed by means of a tool engaging the setting heads 77 of all the rivets 19. Alternative ways of connecting component 61 of the preliminary damper arrangement are disclosed (Figs. 8, 9, 10).
