Abstract

System of assessing the commutation of direct current machines, uses a special Aerial 1 located outside the machine for detecting sparks, which picks up the electromagnetic radiation caused by the sparks. The aerial signal, damped high-frequency pulses, is amplified in the Amplifier 2 whose output goes to a Comparator 3, which selects the pulses greater than a particular level (adjustable) and forms them giving binary pulses at its output, these are conveyed to a Counter 4 whose numeric output in the Indicator 5 shows the level of sparking according to a suitable code (e.g. 0 - no sparks 100 - maximum acceptable in service). The sparks produce heavy wear on the machines (commutator and brushes) and can cause serious damage (arcing or "flashing") between brushes. The invention, applied to traction motors or to the exciters of hydroelectric generating sets will increase the reliability of these machines, reducing maintenance costs and enabling true Predictive Maintenance to be achieved.
