Abstract

Process for dyeing chromium-tanned leather using liposomes as a dispersant vehicle Multilamellar liposomes are used as dispersed dye vehicles in the dyeing of tanned leather specifically this relates to multilamellar liposomes comprising egg phosphatidyl choline containing dispersed dyes of the anthraquinone and azo type, in particular their representatives C.I. Disperse Violet 1(A) and C.I. Disperse Orange 1(B) with different concentrations of dye and phospholipid. This process results in the controlled delivery of dye to the tanned leather which is directly related to the relative proportion of the two components in the liposomes. Optimum delivery of dye is obtained with dye/phospholipid proportions of 0.24 and 0.28 by weight for dyes (A) and (B). The dyed samples have a regular distribution of dye over the surface of the leather, this distribution being especially uniform when dye/liposome systems corresponding to the molar ratios for maximum dye delivery are used.
