Abstract

New product of formula C3N4, process for preparing it and applications The new product C3N4 is characterized in that it is extremely hard (3.55 GPa), has a density of 2.3 g/cm3 (in carbon matrices) and crystallises in a hexagonal structure with system parameters a = 6.45 A and c = 2.49 A. The process for obtaining it is characterized in that essentially it comprises the heat treatment of a carbonitrided precursor in the presence of a suitable catalyst in a nitrogen or argon atmosphere at a temperature between approximately 100 and 900 degree C. The C3N4 has important industrial applications on account of its extraordinary hardness and especially in the technology of ceramics and their finishing.
