Abstract

Micro-organism (Pseudomonas putida) and process for the microbiological degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons of the toluene, xylene or ethylbenzene type. Bacteria belonging to the genus Pseudomonas (lodged with the C.E.C.T. under number 4501 on the 13/6/1994) which are capable of tolerating up to 90% (v/v) of toluenes, xylenes and ethylbenzene and of using these compounds as a source of carbon thus giving rise to their removal have been isolated and characterized. The removal of toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene from effluents, water and soils contaminated by these compounds is achieved by inoculating the effluents and soils requiring treatment with a culture of the said micro- organisms. This process can be applied to the removal of toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene contained in industrial effluents, contaminated water and soils, and for the removal of surpluses in storage tanks, thus bringing about an effective solution to the environmental problem associated with the treatment of these ubiquitous pollutants.
