Abstract

The process for forming orifices and engraving metal sheets having perimeter roughnesses of less than 0.01 mm by an electrochemical dissolution process is described. Areas of metal which are not protected against electrochemical attack are dissolved by means of electrolytes whose composition ensures a metal cleaning action the conditions for the process consist of the application of voltage pulses superimposed on a constant anode voltage. In the electrolytic cell the metal sheet is mounted on sample holders located at the base. The cathode includes bubblers to allow the passage of oxygen bubbles formed during the electrochemical etching process and is located above the sample holder. The walls supporting the sample holders and the cathode also have openings to permit replacement of the spent electrolyte between the electrodes with new material. This process has application in the manufacture of masks for the evaporation of thin films, metal membranes and grids, figures engraved on metal, etc. with a resolution of greater than 0.01 mm.
