Abstract

The appts. to close a piston/cylinder assembly, such as a shock absorber, has a holder to take the outer tube (3) of the absorber assembly at a defined position to a reference plane (20). At least one bending tool (17), to bend over the upper lip of the outer tube (3) of the assembly to form the closure, is moved from a radially outer position to bring the tool surface (19) parallel to the tube and against it. During the lip bending action, the tool (17) swings round a pivot point by a given angle between the end face of the piston and the tool surface (19). The mechanism gives a relative rotary movement between the outer tube (3) and the tool (17) while the upper lip of the tube (3) is bent over to give the closure. At the end of the lip bending action, the tool (17) is returned to its start position. ADVANTAGE - The appts. gives an effective closing action to the end of the tube contg. the shock absorber assembly, where the shrouding tube has a relatively thick wall, to give a flat closed end.
