Abstract

Treatment is by controlled application of a CO2 laser beam. Energy absorbed from radiation of 10.6 micron wavelength causes softening of a thin layer of glass which flows under surface tension forces, to reduce roughness. Solidification takes place under controlled cooling conditions. Process can be applied to surfaces of any shape with initial roughness of 1-10 microns, and the resulting surface has max. roughness below 30 nm.
