Abstract

In-situ repair of wear occurring on railway rails through wheel/rail friction. - Currently, when indentations may affect train comfort or safety, sections of rail are replaced. - The process which is the subject of the patent offers an alternative method: By means of grinding, the cracks and thermally affected zone are removed on the surface of the indentations. The worn zone is filled with solder. Finally, the original geometry is re-established, eliminating the overthickness by means of grinding. - It may be applied to continuous or local areas of wear on rails, crossings, and railway network expansions (extensions). It allows repairs without interrupting traffic along the track. The guarantee of quality of the repair is based on: Non-destructive control prior to welding. Temperature control on the rail. Control of the welding process. Non-destructive final tests.
