Abstract

The invention relates to a method of welding thin-walled heat-exchanger tubes free of residual gaps to the rear of a tube plate (1) which is provided with bores (2) corresponding to the inside diameter of the tubes (5) and collars (3) concentrically surrounding these bores (2) and made out of the material of the tube plate (1). The end face (4) of the collars (3) is welded without filler material to the end face (6) of the centred tubes (5) according to the tungsten inert-gas welding process (TIG) by means of a welding head rotating in the interior of the bore (2). A ceramic ring (7) which surrounds the weld joint on the outside is used to centre the tubes (5) relative to the tube plate (1) and to form a backing support on the outside of the weld joint. The ceramic ring (7) not only serves to centre the respective tube (5) relative to the collar (3) at the tube plate (1) but also forms the backing support during the welding operation.
