Abstract
Method for locating, by technical measuring means, a break in a rail (SB) which brings about an electrical disconnection of a rail, within a track section (GA) which is separated from neighbouring track sections by insulated rail joints (IS), and a device for carrying out the method, are disclosed. The input resistance of a track circuit formed by the track section (GA) is measured at short intervals and a value for the ballast derivation is determined therefrom, with the aid of the known line equations for a railway track and previously determined and stored parameters which are characteristic for the track, and stored. If, as a result of a break in the rail, the input resistance of the track circuit rises, the distance(s) from the input (ES) to the break point (SB) can be determined with the aid of the stored value of the ballast derivation with such precision that the search for the break in the rail can be limited to a highly restricted track area.
