Abstract
New tobacco smoking articles comprise (i) smoking tobacco, (ii) a container for (i) and (iii) a cpd., supported by (ii) and associated with (i). The cpd. (iii) is such that when the article is smoked the vapour of the cpd. is inhaled in the smoke stream. It is present in an amt. sufficient to inhibit the selective localisation of nitrosamines and their metabolites in the smoker's tissues, but not having any toxic effect. - Pref. cpd. (iii) is encapsulated in the shell walls of the article or distributed through the tobacco. The container is pref. a cigarette paper with a cellulose acetate tow filter. The tissue is bronchial epithelium tissue. The cpd. is sprayed onto the tobacco before it is put into the container. The cpd. is pref. an alcohol, esp. a cyclohexanol (3-methylcyclohexanol) or 1-hexanol or 2-octanol, or is a solid esp. metapyrone, diethyldithiocarbamate, piperonal, imidazole or naphthalene. A process for making cigarettes by spraying redried cut rag tobacco with the cpd. and then machining the prod. to a cigarette is new.
