Cowl fitted in the head of a chimney holds a bladed rotary compressor driven by an axial motor and forcing the fumes through an annular trough filled with cleansing fluid which is entrained and formed into foam on passage through a unit formed of corrugated strip between inner and outer baffle domes. Before the fumes, cleaned by foam, leave the open discharge mouth, the foam is broken down under the combined effect of a radial blower and a series of baffle plates of differing conicity which surround the blower. Cleaning liq. sepd. from the foam is stored, e.g. in the basement tank of a building, for re-use.
