For selectively obtaining hydroxymethylcyclopropane, a cyclopropane carboxylic acid ester is hydrogenated in presence of a Zn chromite catalyst in flume phase or contact phase with a hydrogen pressure of 200 to 300 bar and temperatures of 200 degrees C to 350 degrees C.Preferably a cyclopropane carboxylic acid ester is used whose alcohol components have 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and preferably 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
