Abstract

The invention provides a fin structure (3), and a method and apparatus for forming a fin structure (3), for application to the exterior of a tube (4) to form a heat transfer device effective in minimizing frost bridging in refrigeration operations. The fin structure is wound helically onto a refrigerant-carrying tube (4), and comprises an integrally formed chain of looped fins (3), each looped fin having a mounting flange (8,9) at each end thereof and comprising two vertical fin portions (10a,10b) extending respectively from each mounting flange (8,9) and connected together by a bridge portion (10c,10s) the method and apparatus for making the same includes a unitary stretch preforming process to reform thin lanced sheet metal fin stock (2) into the final looped fin shape (3) in a single forming step.
