Abstract

The fuel system for an ic-engine (27) has a fuel control unit (14) for premixing liquid fuel with a part of the total air change. There is a spary nozzle (43) through which the mixed air and fuel is passed. A heater (48) preheats the mixed air and fuel from the nozzle to produce a gas. The heater can be a heat exchanger surrounding part of the exhaust manifold. - A conduit (49) conveys the gas to the inlet manifold (31) of the engine where it is mixed with the remainder of the air charge. The fuel quantity is controlled by a needle valve. (2/5) EPAB- EP-228468 B A fuel system for an internal combustion spark ignition engine (27) having an inlet manifold (31,103) and an exhaust manifold (26), the fuel system including means (32,35,36,37104,106,108) for conveyi conveying a charge of air to the inlet manifold (31,103), a fuel supply nozzle (43,117), a liquid fuel metering and regulating means (41,100,24) for supplying a metered quantity of liquid fuel to the fuel supply nozzle (43,117), a heat exchanger (48,102) which in use is heated by exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold (26) for heating the fuel supplied through the fuel supply nozzle (43,117) and means (49,118) for conveying the heated fuel to the inlet manifold (31,103) wehre it where it mixes with said charge of air, said liquid fuel metering and regulating means (41,100,24) in use, supplying metered fuel at a regulated pressure, characterised in that the liquid fuel metering and regulating means (41,100,24) has a fuel exit through which the metered fuel at a regulated pressure exits, said fuel exit being upstream of the fuel supply nozzle (43,117) and in communication with a chamber which in use is at a perssure which is not influenced by the pressure in the inlet manifold (31,103) and that the fuel supply nozzle (43,117) comprises a venturi-type spray nozzle (43, 117) having an inlet end in communication with said chamber so as to receive said metered and regulated liquid fuel from said fuel exit and a part of said air charge, or said metered and regulated liquid fuel from said fuel exit, and ambient air and having a discharge end located externally of said chamber and arranged to spray atomised fuel directly onto a heated surface of said heat exchanger (48,102). (11pp) USAB- US4893604 A The fuel system is provided with a unit (14) for pre-mixing liq. fuel with a part of the total air charge. A spray nozzle (43) has mixed air/fuel passed through it. - A heat exchanger (48) heats the mixed air/fuel issuing from the spray nozzle to produce a gas. A conduit (49) for conveying the gas to an inlet manifold (31) where it mixes with the remainder of the air charge.
