Abstract
Dispositivo de descarga de arco que comprende estructuras de electrodo que funcionan en un medio gaseoso que contiene una proporción sustancial de oxígeno libre a una presión suficientemente alta para hacer que la descarga entre las estructuras electródicas tome la forma de un arco concentrado estable siendo al menos una de dichas estructuras electródicas operativa como cátodo y comprendiendo una masa de material catódico que tiene una capa superficial fundida restringida formada por un arco de densidad de corriente elevada que es concentrado sobre ella cuando el dispositivo está funcionando caracterizada porque dicha capa superficial fundida comprende un óxido metálico que tiene propiedades de emisión termiónica y que es reducible por la acción del arco para formar una delgada película superficial incandescente fundida del metal de base cuando el dispositivo está en funcionamiento soportando dicha capa de óxido dicha película fundida y teniendo baja conductividad térmica y un punto de fusión superior al de dicho metal para mantener la temperatura de la película considerablemente por encima del punto de fusión de dicho metal haciendo la acción de dicho arco que ocurra una reacción reversible entre la reducción y la oxidación en dicha capa superficial comprendiendo la masa de material catódico que está debajo de dicha capa de óxido particulas de dicho metal de base y medios para impedir la oxidación progresiva del metal de base debajo de la capa de óxido comprendiendo estos últimos medios partículas de una sustancia metálica conductora interdispersa con dichas partículas del metal de base estando dicha sustancia metálica esencialmente libre de tendencias a la oxidación progresiva a la temperatura de funcionamiento del dispositivo.Arc discharge device comprising electrode structures operating in a gaseous medium containing a substantial proportion of free oxygen at a pressure high enough to cause the discharge between the electrode structures to take the form of a stable concentrated arc being at least one of said electrode structures operative as a cathode and comprising a mass of cathode material having a constrained molten surface layer formed by an arc of high current density that is concentrated on it when the device is operating characterized in that said molten surface layer comprises a metal oxide having thermionic emitting properties and being reducible by arc action to form a thin molten glowing surface film of the base metal when the device is in operation said oxide layer supporting said molten film and having low thermal conductivity and a melting point melting greater than that of said metal to maintain the temperature of the film considerably above the melting point of said metal by the action of said arc causing a reversible reaction between reduction and oxidation to occur in said surface layer comprising the mass of cathode material which is below said oxide layer particles of said base metal and means for preventing the progressive oxidation of the base metal below the oxide layer, the latter means comprising particles of a conductive metallic substance interdispersed with said particles of the base metal being said metallic substance essentially free from progressive oxidation tendencies at the operating temperature of the device.
