Abstract

A trophy assembly comprises a trophy base (38), a connector piece (20), at least one decorative element (12), and a rod (44) for connecting the decorative element to the connector piece. The rod has a first end which is attachable to the decorative element, and a second end provided with a screw-threaded portion for attachment to the connector piece, the second end of the rod has a first radius. The trophy base includes a bore (36) shaped to receive the connector piece, and the bore has an internal wall. The connector piece is formed from a plastics material and comprises a head portion (22) and a body portion (24). It has an elongate socket (26) passing through both the head and body portions, the elongate socket has a second radius which is greater than or equal to the first radius. The body portion of the connector piece has a first end proximal to the head portion and a second end distal to the head portion, and the second end of the body portion comprises at least two parts which are resilient when subjected to a force substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. The body portion has an internal surface defining the elongate socket and the internal surface is provided with at least two elongate protrusions (34) oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. The elongate protrusions define an inner channel with a third radius, and the third radius is smaller than the first radius. The body portion has an external surface provided with a plurality of ridges, and the connector piece is connectable to the trophy base by pushing the connector piece into the bore such that the parts of the body portion are pushed together and such that the ridges are in contact with the internal wall of the bore. Description

Trophy Assembly
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to trophy assemblies and in particular to trophy assemblies comprising component parts that are assembled by trophy dealers.
Background of the Invention
Trophies typically comprise a base, onto which is mounted an upper, decorative part such as a cup or figurine, optionally with additional risers or columns therebetween. A simple example of a typical trophy assembly is illustrated in Figure 1. The trophy comprises a trophy base 10, and a decorative element in the form of a figurine 12 which includes a downwardly projecting threaded rod 14. The rod 14 is inserted into a bore 16 in the trophy base 10 and the rod is secured to the base using an internally threaded connector piece, or ferrule 18, into which the threaded rod 14 is fastened. The head 20 of the ferrule locates within a counterbore recess (not shown) on the underside of the base 10. Risers and columns can be added using additional threaded rods and ferrules.
Different risers, figurines, and/or cups can be connected to different bases allowing a number of different trophies to be created. The assembling of the trophy typically either takes place at the trophy sales outlet, or at the trophy distributor. It is a time-consuming task since all of the different elements, and particularly the decorative element, must be properly aligned with the base, through adjustment of the rod and ferrule.
GB2557206, also to the applicant, describes an improved trophy assembly in which a male connector and a female connector socket comprise a combination of protrusions and indents which interact to secure a decorative element to a trophy base without the requirement for threaded rods. However, this arrangement requires specialist male connector pieces and corresponding female connector sockets.
It would be desirable to provide an improved trophy assembly that allows standard trophy decorative elements to be quickly and easily attached to trophy bases, reducing the time taken to assemble trophies of this nature. Summary of the Invention
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a trophy assembly comprising a trophy base, a connector piece, at least one decorative element, and a connecting rod for connecting the decorative element to the connector piece; the rod having a first end which is attachable to the decorative element, and a second end provided with a screw-threaded portion for attachment to the connector piece, the second end of the rod having a diameter. The trophy base includes a bore shaped to receive the connector piece, the bore having an internal wall. The connector piece is formed from a plastics material and comprises a head portion and a body portion and comprises an elongate socket passing through both the head and body portions; the elongate socket having a second radius which is greater than or equal to the first radius. The body portion of the connector piece has a first end proximal to the head portion and a second end distal to the head portion, and wherein the second end of the body portion comprises at least two parts which are resilient when subjected to a force substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. The body portion has an internal surface defining the elongate socket and the internal surface is provided with at least two elongate protrusions oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket, and wherein the elongate protrusions define an inner channel with a third radius, and the third radius is smaller than the first radius. The body portion has an external surface provided with a plurality of ridges, and the connector piece is connectable to the trophy base by pushing the connector piece into the bore such that the parts of the body portion are pushed together and such that the ridges are in contact with the internal wall of the bore. The decorative element is connectable to the base by screwing the second end of the rod into the socket of the connector piece such that the screw-threaded portion of the rod engages with the elongate protrusions within the socket.
The plastics material may be a polypropylene copolymer, preferably with a Shore D hardness of around 70 to 80.
The connector piece may be a one-piece plastics moulding.
The connection of connector piece to the trophy base is a push-fit, or a friction-fit connection.
The head portion of the connector piece has an underside and the underside of the head portion may be provided with a double-sided adhesive layer. Preferably, the body portion of the connector piece comprises at least two parts. More preferably, each part is connected separately to the head portion.
Preferably, the body portion of the connector piece includes two parts and each part is substantially semi-cylindrical in shape.
Preferably, the head portion of the connector piece has a diameter and the body portion has a diameter and the head portion diameter is greater than the body portion diameter.
Preferably, the bore of the trophy base includes a counterbore shaped to receive the head portion of the connector piece.
Preferably, the head portion of the connector piece has a diameter which is greater than a diameter of the body portion of the connector piece.
Preferably, the ridges on the external surfaces of the body portion are substantially parallel and arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket of the connector piece.
Preferably the bore in the trophy base is substantially cylindrical in shape.
Preferably, the bore of the trophy base includes a counterbore portion shaped to receive the head portion of the connector piece.
The rod may form part of the decorative element. Alternatively, the rod may be a separate piece.
The decorative element may be selected from the group comprising: figurines, cups, risers, columns, pedestals and other trophy toppers.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a connector piece for use in a trophy assembly, wherein the connector piece is formed from a plastics material and comprises a head portion and a body portion and comprises an elongate socket passing through both the head and body portions. The body portion of the connector piece has a first end proximal to the head portion and a second end distal to the head portion, and wherein the second end of the body portion comprises at least two parts which are resilient when subjected to a force substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. The body portion has an internal surface defining the elongate socket and the internal surface is provided with at least two elongate protrusions oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. The body portion has an external surface provided with a plurality of ridges, and the connector piece is connectable to a trophy base by pushing the connector piece into a bore in the trophy base such that the parts of the body portion are pushed together and such that the ridges are in contact with an internal wall of the bore.
The head portion of the connector piece has an underside and the underside of the head portion may be provided with a double-sided adhesive layer. When the connector piece is inserted into the trophy base the adhesive layer preferably adheres to both the connector piece and the trophy base.
Preferably, the connector piece comprises at least two parts. More preferably, each part is connected separately to the head portion.
The ridges on the external surface of the body portion may be substantially parallel and arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket. Alternatively, the ridges on the external surface of the body portion may be substantially parallel and arranged at an angle of less that 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket.
The connector piece of the invention can be quickly, easily, and securely inserted into the bore of a trophy base without the need for any further securing elements. A decorative element, fitted with a standard screw-threaded rod fitting, can then be quickly and easily screwed into the socket of the connector piece to form a trophy assembly. The connector piece provides a secure connection of the decorative element to the base. The invention provides an improved trophy assembly that reduces the time taken to assemble trophies made up of several component parts including standard decorative elements.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments
Referring now to the figures, figures 2a to 2d illustrate a connector piece 20 for use with a trophy assembly. The connector piece 20 includes a head portion 22 and a body portion 24, the head portion having a larger diameter than the body portion. An elongate internal socket 26 passes substantially centrally through the body portion. An aperture 25 in the head portion 22 is substantially aligned with the elongate internal socket 26. The aperture 25 includes two lip portions 23 on the inside rim of the aperture, meaning that before use the majority of the aperture 25 has a diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the elongate internal socket 26. A pair of indents 27 are also present in between the lip portions, the diameter of the aperture at the indents being substantially equal to the diameter of the elongate internal socket 26. An adhesive layer 31 may be present on the underside of the head portion as shown in figures 2b, 2c and 2d. This adhesive layer may be a double-sided sticker provided with pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides.
The body portion 24 comprises a pair of substantially semi-cylindrical shaped portions 28, spaced apart from each other by a small gap 30, and each separately attached to the head portion 22. The body portions are resilient such that the distal ends can be squeezed together slightly (moved in the direction labelled Y in Figure 2d) when the connector is pushed into a bore in a trophy base (described in more detail in relation to Figure 4a and b below).
The connector piece is for use with a traditional trophy base 38 which includes a bore 36 therethrough, as shown in Figures 3a and 3c. The bore is shaped to receive the connector piece 20 as illustrated in Figures 3b and 3d, and the cross sections shown in Figures 4a and 4b. The bore 36 may include a counterbore portion 36’ shaped to receive the head 22 of the connector piece 20, so that it lies flush with the upper surface of the trophy base as illustrated in Figures 3b, 4a and 5b. If not counterbore portion is present, then the head portion of the connector piece sits above the surface of the trophy base as illustrated in Figures 3d and 4b. When an adhesive layer 31 is present on the underside of the head portion of the connector this helps to secure the connector to the trophy base.
As shown in Figures 4a and 4b, the distal ends of the body portions of the connector are slightly squeezed together when the connector piece is pushed into the bore on the trophy base, and the distance X between the distal ends of the body portions decreases slightly to X’ when the connector is pushed into the bore 36 of a trophy base 38, the bore having internal walls 40. The amount of movement of the distal ends of the body portions depends on the size of the bore 36. The external surface of each semi-cylindrical body portion is provided with a plurality of substantially parallel ridges 32. Friction between the ridges 32 and the walls of the bore hold the connector in place without any further connectors or nuts being required. The end tips of the ridges 32 may deform slightly as the connector is pushed into the bore 36.
The internal socket 26 of the connector piece includes a pair of elongate protrusions or ribs 34 which extend lengthwise along opposing inner walls of the opposing semi-cylindrical shaped portions 28, the elongate protrusions protruding into the elongate internal socket 26.
The connector piece is preferably made from a polypropylene copolymer with a Shore D hardness of around 70 to 80.
With reference to Figure 5a and Figure 5b, a trophy assembly includes a decorative element which is positioned on top of a trophy base 26. A decorative element, such as a figurine 42 includes a downwardly projecting rod 44 which is provided with a screw thread 46 at the end distal to the decorative element. To assemble the trophy, the rod 44 is pushed into the socket 26 of the connector 20 and is then screwed into the connector by rotating the rod and attached figurine, typically in a clockwise direction. The screw thread 46 on the rod is self-tapping, and as the rod is screwed into the connector the screw thread 46 on the rod engages with the internal elongate ribs 34 within the socket 26 of the connector piece 20, securing the rod, and hence the figurine 42 onto the trophy base 38. When an adhesive layer 31 is present on the underside of the head portion of the connector this helps to secure the connector to the trophy base and helps to prevent it from turning in the bore when the rod is screwed into the connector.
The screw thread 46 of the rod engages with the lip portions 23 on the inner edge of the aperture 25, as well as with the internal ribs 34 within the elongate socket 26. In this way the diameter of the aperture 25 is allowed to enlarge as the screw thread bites into the head. After the rod has been screwed into the connector piece the diameter of the aperture 25 is substantially in line with the diameter defined by the indents 27, as shown by the dotted line in Figure 2a. In the illustrated example the internal ribs 34 are offset from the indents 27 in the head portion by approximately 90 degrees.
The trophy assembly of the invention can also be used with risers or columns as illustrated in Figure 6. In this example, the rod 44 of the decorative element 42 is extended using an appropriate length of threaded rod extension 48 and a sleeve or coupler connector 50 which is internally threaded. Both the rod 44 and the rod extension 48 are attached to the coupler connector 50 via the complementary screw threads. A hollow column extension piece 52 can now be used, along with a lid piece 54. The rod extension 48 is inserted through the lid piece 54, and column 52, and the end of the rod extension piece is then inserted into the connector piece 20 located in the trophy base 26 as previously described.
Using the connector piece of the invention the decorative element or figurine is easily, and firmly attached to the trophy base. There is no need to secure the connector piece separately to the trophy base, and the decorative element is easily attached via a self-tapping screw-threaded rod. This makes assembly of the trophy much quicker.

1. A trophy assembly comprising a trophy base, a connector piece, at least one decorative element, and a rod for connecting the decorative element to the connector piece; the rod having a first end which is attachable to the decorative element, and a second end provided with a screw- threaded portion for attachment to the connector piece, the second end of the rod having a first radius; wherein the trophy base includes a bore shaped to receive the connector piece, the bore having an internal wall; wherein the connector piece is formed from a plastics material and comprises a head portion and a body portion and comprises an elongate socket passing through both the head and body portions, the elongate socket having a second radius which is greater than or equal to the first radius; wherein the body portion of the connector piece has a first end proximal to the head portion and a second end distal to the head portion, and wherein the second end of the body portion comprises at least two parts which are resilient when subjected to a force substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate socket; wherein the body portion has an internal surface defining the elongate socket and the internal surface is provided with at least two elongate protrusions oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket, and wherein the elongate protrusions define an inner channel with a third radius, and the third radius is smaller than the first radius; wherein the body portion has an external surface provided with a plurality of ridges, and wherein the connector piece is connectable to the trophy base by pushing the connector piece into the bore such that the parts of the body portion are pushed together and such that the ridges are in contact with the internal wall of the bore; and wherein the decorative element is connectable to the base by screwing the second end of the rod into the socket of the connector piece such that the screw-threaded portion of the rod engages with the elongate protrusions within the socket.
2. A trophy assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the body portion of the connector piece comprises at least two parts.
3. A trophy assembly according to Claim 1, wherein each part is connected separately to the head portion.
4. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the ridges on the external surface of the body portion are substantially parallel and arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket.
5. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the head portion of the connector piece has a diameter and the body portion has a diameter and the head portion diameter is greater than the body portion diameter.
6. A trophy assembly according to Claim 5, wherein the bore of the trophy base includes a counterbore portion shaped to receive the head portion of the connector piece.
7. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the bore of the trophy base is substantially cylindrical in shape.
8. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the body portion of the connector piece comprises two parts and each part is substantially semi-cylindrical in shape.
9. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the rod forms part of the decorative element.
10. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the rod is a separate connector piece.
11. A trophy assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the at least one decorative element is be selected from the group comprising: figurines, cups, risers, columns, pedestals and trophy toppers.
12. A connector piece for use in a trophy assembly, wherein the connector piece is formed from a plastics material and comprises a head portion and a body portion and comprises an elongate socket passing through both the head and body portions; wherein the body portion of the connector piece has a first end proximal to the head portion and a second end distal to the head portion, and wherein the second end of the body portion comprises at least two parts which are resilient when subjected to a force substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate socket; wherein the body portion has an internal surface defining the elongate socket and the internal surface is provided with at least two elongate protrusions oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket; wherein the body portion has an external surface provided with a plurality of ridges, and wherein the connector piece is connectable to a trophy base by pushing the connector piece into a bore in the trophy base such that the parts of the body portion are pushed together and such that the ridges are in contact with an internal wall of the bore.
13. A connector piece according to Claim 12, wherein the body portion of the connector piece comprises at least two parts.
14. A connector piece according to Claim 13, wherein each part is connected separately to the head portion.
15. A connector piece according to any of Claims 12 to 14, wherein the ridges on the external surface of the body portion are substantially parallel and arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the elongate socket.
