Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for manufacturing an MMO for capturing carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, an MMO, an apparatus, and an automobile.
- MMO mixed metal oxides
- the product Lewatit VP OC 1065 from LANXESS (see product data sheet) is known as a divinylbenzene-crosslinked polymer in the form of spherical beads with primary amino groups, which is suitable for adsorbing atmospheric CO2.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a method, an MMO, a device, and a motor vehicle that at least partially overcomes the disadvantages mentioned above. This object is achieved by the method according to claim 1 according to the invention, the MMO according to claim 6 according to the invention, the device according to claim 9 according to the invention, and the motor vehicle according to claim 10 according to the invention.
- the present disclosure relates to a method of making a material for scavenging carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, comprising: using a material having a core and terminated by primary amine end groups; and
- Epoxy based endcapping of the terminal primary amine end groups to secondary amine end groups Epoxy based endcapping of the terminal primary amine end groups to secondary amine end groups.
- the present disclosure relates to a material for scavenging carbon dioxide from atmospheric air that is terminated with secondary amines.
- the present disclosure relates to an apparatus for capturing carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, comprising a substance according to the second aspect.
- the present disclosure relates to a motor vehicle with a device according to the third aspect.
- DAC-suitable substances are generally known.
- known MMOs can have poor aging properties - due to the use of terminal primary amines. Therefore, it has been recognized that MMOs which have secondary amine end groups can have better aging properties and can also lead to a better energy balance.
- some embodiments relate to a method for preparing a mixed metal oxide, MMO, for scavenging carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, comprising: preparing a layered MMO, wherein the MMO is terminated with primary amine end groups; and epoxy-based endcapping of the terminal amine primary endgroups of the MMO to secondary amine endgroups.
- the mixed metal oxide (MMO) may include a well-known MMO such as Mg-Al-CO3, although the present disclosure is not limited thereto.
- mixed metal oxides made from hydroxides can be used according to the present disclosure as these can enable efficient capture of CO2 from atmospheric air.
- An adsorbent can be prepared so that it further comprises adsorption materials, which instead of or MMO other mesoporous materials such as silica (silica), fumed silica (fumed silica; fumed silica), Zr-SBA-15, SBA-15, SBA-15 +, PEG (polyethylene glycol), silica fiber, PE-MCM-41, MFC, or activated carbon.
- adsorption materials which instead of or MMO other mesoporous materials such as silica (silica), fumed silica (fumed silica; fumed silica), Zr-SBA-15, SBA-15, SBA-15 +, PEG (polyethylene glycol), silica fiber, PE-MCM-41, MFC, or activated carbon.
- the MMO produced according to the method according to the disclosure can be used to absorb carbon dioxide from atmospheric air (e.g. applicable for direct air capture (DAC)).
- Atmospheric air means any gas mixture that can contain air and any gas mixture that contains CO2.
- CO2 can be absorbed from any environment, such as from the atmospheric air, but also from exhaust gases or atmospheric air enriched with exhaust gases, such as an exhaust system of a vehicle (motor vehicle, ship, commercial vehicle, or the like) or an aircraft, from an exhaust pipe of a power plant (which produces CO2), in an intake system (e.g. in a turbocharger), or the like.
- a layered MMO can be prepared, e.g. from hydroxides as described above.
- the layered MMO prepared by the present process may be terminated with primary amine end groups, which may be endcapped by the present process, e.g. based on an epoxide, such that the previously primary amine end groups become secondary amine end groups.
- the obtained MMO according to the present disclosure can have a longer lifetime than known MMOs because it ages less quickly. Furthermore, a reduction in a desorption temperature can be achieved because, in some exemplary embodiments, CO2 binds less strongly to secondary amine end groups than to primary amine end groups. This leads to a better energy balance of a DAC process (or any other process where CO2 is to be captured). It has been recognized that secondary amines lead to a longer lifetime than primary amines, which is why it has been recognized that the lifetime of the MMO is increased when it is terminated with secondary amine groups.
- the epoxide may be any epoxide suitable for end-capping, such as (poly)ethylene oxide, (poly)propylene oxide, or other (poly)alkaloid oxides, although the present disclosure is not limited to alkaloid oxides.
- the choice of epoxide can depend on which end groups are to be capped.
- amine groups are not limited to using amine groups.
- imidazole groups in addition to or as an alternative to amine groups
- capped with a different epoxide being provided in such embodiments.
- the epoxide can also be a mixture of different epoxides.
- the epoxy comprises ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide.
- an MMO-PEI polyethylene imine
- the PEI can be branched or linear. If it is branched, a higher proportion of amines per area can be achieved, allowing higher adsorption capacity to be achieved.
- the MMOs offer an optimal specific surface area for PEIs, so that the adsorption capacity is further increased than in known MMOs for DAC.
- the MMO comprises Mg n -Al-CO3, where n is indicative of the molar ratio of Mg and Al.
- fabricating the layered MMO includes: using an MMO precursor;
- the MMO precursor can consist of a mixture of metal compounds.
- the MMO precursor may comprise (Mg(NOs)2*6H2O + Al(NOs)3*9H2O).
- Such an MMO precursor can be mixed with Na2ÜO3 and the pH of the mixture can be adjusted accordingly (e.g. to 10).
- an AMOST method can be used to create the MMO.
- Some example embodiments relate to a mixed metal oxide, MMO, for scavenging carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, wherein the MMO is terminated with secondary amines, as described herein, made, for example, by a method according to the present disclosure.
- MMO mixed metal oxide
- the terminal secondary amines are attached to epoxide, which is bonded to a metal oxide core.
- the epoxy includes ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, as discussed herein.
- Some example embodiments relate to a device for capturing carbon dioxide from atmospheric air comprising an MMO as discussed herein, for example made by a method according to the present disclosure.
- the device can be designed, for example, as a filter, DAC module, or the like, and can be used in various contexts, for example, in an exhaust line and/or Intake line of a motor vehicle, at a power plant, in cities, in nature, in the chemical industry in which CO2 is produced as a by-product (e.g. in combination with electrolysis and methanol synthesis after reverse water gas shift reaction) or the like.
- Some example embodiments relate to a motor vehicle including an apparatus for collecting atmospheric air including an MMO according to the present disclosure.
- FIG. 1 shows a block diagram of a method for manufacturing an MMO according to the present disclosure
- FIG. 2 schematically shows an embodiment of an automotive vehicle having an apparatus for capturing atmospheric air according to the present disclosure.
- FIG. 1 An embodiment of a method 1 for manufacturing an MMO (or generally a substance as described further below) according to the present disclosure is shown in FIG. 1 .
- a material having a core and terminal primary amine end groups is used, which in this embodiment comprises preparing a layered MMO as described herein.
- the primary amine end groups of the substance are epoxy-based capped as described herein.
- the motor vehicle 10 includes an apparatus 11 including a material for absorbing carbon dioxide according to the present disclosure.
- the device 11 is provided in an intake manifold of a motor vehicle.
- Some example embodiments relate to a method of making a material for scavenging carbon dioxide from atmospheric air, comprising: using a material having a core and terminated by primary amine end groups; and epoxy-based endcapping the terminal primary amine end groups to secondary amine end groups as described herein.
- Using may also include manufacturing.
- the epoxy includes ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, as described herein.
- the core includes an MMO or activated carbon.
- the MMO includes an MMO PEI.
- activated carbon has different thermal conductivities than, for example, an MMO. Activated charcoal can warm up faster and cool down faster, so using activated charcoal may not require desorbing at such high temperatures.
- activated charcoal as a core has a better energy balance than known substances. Beschreibung
Die wissenschaftliche Publikation „Efficient CO2 capture from ambient air with amine- functionalized Mg-AI mixed metal oxides” von Zhu et al., erschienen in J. Mater. Chem. A, 2020, 8, S. 16421-16428 beschreibt Amin-funktionalisierte MMOs. Die enthalten jedoch primäre endständige Amine.
Ferner beschreibt die wissenschaftliche Publikation „Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 using polyethylenimine (PEI) „snow“: a scalable strategy“ von Xu et al., erschienen in Chem.
In manchen Ausführungsbeispielen umfasst das Herstellen des geschichteten MMOs: Verwenden eines MMO-Precursors;
