Fig. 1 illustrates a general setup of acombination appliance 10 comprising acooking hob 12 and adowndraft extraction device 14 installed in akitchen cabinet 16. Thecombination appliance 10 illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2 presents a structure of acombination appliance 10 according to a first example. In general, and as shown inFig. 1 , thecombination appliance 10 is implemented in a cut-out of akitchen countertop 18 forming a top cover plate of thekitchen cabinet 16. Thedowndraft extraction device 14 is configured to take away cooking vapours occurring during cooking processes, in particular when cooking with uncovered cookware. Thecooking hob 12 comprises 20a, 20b arranged on a left half and a right half of acooking regions cooktop 22 of thecooking hob 12, which left and right halves are separated from each other by aninlet opening 24 for an intake of the cooking vapours, theinlet opening 24 being arranged alongside a cooktop centreline. Theinlet opening 24 is covered by acover grid 26 for preventing items, e. g. cookware, to fall into theinlet opening 24. Instead of the cover grid 26 a lid may be used for entirely covering theinlet opening 24 when theextraction device 14 is out of use, but for the operation of theextraction device 14 the lid is pivotable into an upright open position. - A
housing 28 of theextraction device 14 is shown inFig. 1 in transparent illustration. Saidhousing 28 provides a closed outer shell or first channel segment for a flow of the sucked-in cooking vapours on their way from the inlet opening 24 to anexhaust opening 30 in abase area 32 of thekitchen cabinet 16. Saidexhaust opening 30 is also covered, namely by anoutlet grille 34. - The flow of the sucked-in cooking vapours through the

Saidextraction fan 36 comprises a bottom-sided intake opening 38 for sucking the cooking vapours from the interior space of thehousing 28. - A rear-sided fan outlet is arranged for a horizontal exit of the air blown out backwards from the
extraction fan housing 42. The fan outlet is connected to a first end of anair duct 44 designed as a rectangular tube and forms a second channel arranged downstream the above-mentioned first channel segment. Directly at the passage from the fan outlet to theair duct 44, an air duct bending by 90 degrees is implemented, which redirects the air flow from horizontal to vertical downwards. Theair duct 44 may be guided alongside a rear side of thekitchen cabinet 16 and may be bent again by 90 degrees close to a rear lower edge of thekitchen cabinet 16 in order to direct the airflow towards exhaust opening 30 in thebase area 32 of thekitchen cabinet 16. Accordingly, the second end of theair duct 44 is connected to theexhaust opening 30. The embodiment illustrated inFig. 1 shows a solution of theair duct 44 with an inclined section of its downwardly directed portion, directed slightly to the right. Naturally, a solution with said portion arranged in an exact vertical direction is considerable as well. - The course of the cooking vapours from the cooking area through the
extraction device 14 to a re-entry into ambient air is illustrated inFig. 1 by dotted arrows 461 to 465. On their way through theextraction device 14, the cooking vapours pass through afilter assembly 48, which is arranged downstream directly behind the inlet opening 24 for providing a purification of the conveyed air. Saidfilter assembly 48 includes afilter carrier 50 supporting a filter element (not shown) that is usually configured for filtering out grease particles and droplets. - The cross-sectional view of
Fig. 2 further shows twopower boards 54, one for theleft cooking region 20a and one for theright cooking region 20b, thepower boards 54 providing cooking zones in the left and 20a, 20b with electrical power. In the present embodiment, theright cooking regions cooking hob 12 is an induction cooking hob and the cooking zones are defined by induction coils (not shown) that are arranged below thecooktop 22 of thecooking hob 12. Attached to the bottom side of thepower board 54 assigned to theright cooking region 20b, a further circuit board is arranged forming acontrol electronics 56 for thecombination appliance 10. - In order to provide the user of the
combination appliance 10 with a condition for a facilitated insertion of thecover grid 26 in theinlet opening 24, and for safeguarding a nice overall aesthetic design by a particularly well positionedcover grid 26 within theinlet opening 24, saidcover grid 26 is configured to be arranged in a centred alignment with theinlet opening 24, with the result of uniform circumferential gap distances. To this end, alignment means are included in the area of the inlet opening 24 of thecombination appliance 10. -
Fig. 3 illustrates anair channel carrier 58 isolated from theextraction device 14, whichair channel carrier 58 defines the inlet opening 24 of theextraction device 14. More specifically, theair channel carrier 58 is formed as a frame enclosing theinlet opening 24. In its fitted state, theair channel carrier 58 is configured to be implemented in a cut-out of thecooktop 22, particularly made of glass-ceramics material, of thecooking hob 12, therein interacting with or forming a part of the previously described first channel segment. The perspective illustration according toFig. 3 shows afirst alignment guide 60 in a first corner of the rectangular inlet opening 24, wherein thefirst alignment guide 60 is positioned on a terrace-shaped load-bearing step 62 configured for supporting a first shorter lateral edge of thecover grid 26. As is shown by the top view of theair channel carrier 58 according toFig. 4 , theair channel carrier 58 further comprises a second alignment guide 60' in a second corner of the rectangular inlet opening 24, which first and second corners are arranged diagonally opposite each other. Also the second alignment guide 60' is positioned on a terrace-shaped load-bearing step 62' configured for supporting the second shorter lateral edge of thecover grid 26. With said supporting of thecover grid 26 at its two shorter lateral edges, thecover grid 26 is entirely supported within theinlet opening 24, wherein the different dimensions of bothcover grid 26 andair channel carrier 58 are defined in such a way that the top side of thecover grid 26 is flush with the top side of thecooktop 22. -
Fig. 5 illustrates an enlarged detail view of theair channel carrier 58, as indicated by "V" inFig. 3 . With such enlarged illustration, the constructive design of thefirst alignment guide 60, which correlates with the second alignment guide 60', will be explained hereafter. Even though shown in more detail only for thefirst alignment guide 60, both first and second alignment guides 60, 60' comprise afirst elevation 64a and asecond elevation 64b, which are arranged on the load-bearing step 62. Particularly in the case of theair channel carrier 58 being made of a plastic material, the first and 64a, 64b may be formed in one piece, e. g. by injection moulding, with the load-second elevations bearing step 62. While thesecond elevation 64b is directly placed in the corner of theinlet opening 24, thefirst elevation 64a is positioned with a distance to thesecond elevation 64b, moved towards the central point of the load-bearing step 62. By positioning thefirst elevation 64a with a distance to thesecond elevation 64b, arecess 66 is interposed therebetween. Saidrecess 66 is determined to receive a mating piece arranged at thecover grid 26, which mating piece will be explained in more detail further down below. Therecess 66 is designed by being enclosed on three sides, namely laterally by 70a, 70b of the first andrespective side walls 64a, 64b, and on the rear side by a section of thesecond elevations inner wall 58a of theair channel carrier 58 or, as shown inFig. 5 , by afront wall 68 attached to said section of theinner wall 58a. The dimensioning of thefront wall 68 defines the gap distance between thecover grid 26 and the inlet opening 24 in interaction with the respective dimensions of the afore-mentioned mating piece. - In particular embodiments, not shown in
Fig. 5 , at least one of the side walls of the first and 64a, 64b and/or saidsecond elevations front wall 68 may comprise an inclined surface, which may be formed as a chamfer. Said at least one inclined surface or chamfer may be adapted to facilitate the insertion of thecover grid 26, hence forming an insertion aid. Preferably, an all-sided chamfering is provided. - As indicated, the centring of the cover element with the inlet opening is provided, on the one hand, by an interaction between the first and second alignment guides 60, 60', more specifically by the
recesses 66 arranged between the first and 64a, 64b of each one of the first and second alignment guides 60, 60', and, on the other hand, an allocated mating piece arranged at thesecond elevations cover grid 26 for each one of the first and second alignment guides 60, 60'. - Referring now to
Figs. 6 to 8 , said mating piece is formed by afoot element 72 resting on the load-bearing step 62, in that carrying thecover grid 26 when arranged within theinlet opening 24. For a stationary arrangement, thecover grid 26 illustrated byFig. 7 , includes fourfoot elements 72, which are arranged in pairs at the two opposing shorter lateral edges of thecover grid 26, therein resting in pairs on the two opposing load-bearing steps 62, 62', as is illustrated in dotted lines inFig. 8 , which indicates the arrangement of thefoot elements 72 on the load-bearing steps 62, 62', when thecover grid 26 is arranged in theinlet opening 24, however, for a better illustration of the bearing or resting situation, without showing thecover grid 26 itself. More specifically, the plane of positioning of thefoot elements 72 is indicated by dotted line L inFig. 3 . - Moreover, two diagonally arranged
foot elements 72 are not only provided for operating as bearing or resting means, but they are also working as centring aids, in that matching and interacting with the first and second alignment guides 60, 60', which are allocated to these two diagonally arrangedfoot elements 72 and which, as previously explained, are therefore arranged diagonally opposite each other in the same way as the twofoot elements 72. Said matching or interaction offoot elements 72 and first and second alignment guides 60, 60' is specifically proved by means of tongues orprotrusions 76, which laterally protrude from the two shorter lateral edges of thecover grid 26. - The
cover grid 26 further comprises fourspacers 74, which are arranged at the two opposing longer lateral edges of thecover grid 26, which spacers 74 are also illustrated in dotted lines inFig. 8 . In the same way as thefoot elements 72, also thespacers 74 are positioned on the bottom side of thecover grid 26, and they also comprise tongues orprotrusions 76, which laterally protrude from the two longer lateral edges of thecover grid 26. In specific embodiments, thespacers 74, more specifically, the tongues orprotrusions 76 of thespacers 74, interact with assigned inclined surfaces, particularly chamfers, arranged at the rim or edges of theinlet opening 24. By means of said tongues orprotrusions 76, in particular with further support provided by assigned inclined surfaces, an alignment of thecover grid 26 in relation to theinlet opening 24 is established. - Advantageously, the
foot elements 72 and/or thespacers 74 are made of an elastic material, preferably rubber or silicone. By interaction with the rim or edges of theinlet opening 24, in particular with inclined surfaces at the rim or edges of theinlet opening 24, a centred positioning of thecover grid 26 can be arranged. - Finally, in contrast to the illustrated
cover grid 26, which has a rotationally symmetric shape, and the illustrated air channel carrier, theextraction device 14 as disclosed herein may also include means for avoiding misplacement of thecover grid 26. Such a misplacement, specifically a placement rotated by 180 degrees, may be disadvantageous if a specifically guided air inlet shall be provided by means of thecover grid 26, may be avoided e. g. with the first and second alignment guides 60, 60', and having different shapes, which assure in interaction with respective designs of the assigned foot elements 72 a placement of thecover grid 26 at the inlet opening 24 in a particular orientation. - Although illustrative embodiments of the present invention have been described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to these precise embodiments, and that various other changes and modifications may be affected therein by one skilled in the art without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention. All such changes and modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
