Definitions

  • the present invention includes a single-stage membrane process for the electrochemical separation of hydrogen from natural gas flows in a pipeline (1) which has an overpressure in the range from 50 mbar to 100 bar, with the following process steps:
  • a partial gas flow (2) is withdrawn from the natural gas flow in a pipeline (1) without changing the gas composition, the mass flow of the partial gas flow depending on the hydrogen content in the natural gas flow (1) being set so that at a hydrogen concentration of ⁇ 10% by volume a degree of depletion of 0.65 to 0.975 is achieved and with a hydrogen concentration of> 10% by volume a degree of depletion of 0.55 to 0.925 is achieved, the degree of depletion being the quotient of the desired molar H2 -Product stream (6) and the molar H2 starting material stream of the partial gas stream at the inlet of the membrane unit (2) is defined
  • this partial gas stream (2) is compressed (3) in front of a membrane unit (5),
  • this partial gas stream is heated to 100 to 250 ° C, either upstream of the membrane unit or in the membrane unit and water (4) is fed to this partial gas stream, upstream of the membrane unit and / or on the permeate side of the membrane unit (4a) so that the water load is between 0.005 and 0.2 mol water / mol natural gas,
  • this partial gas stream is fed to an electrochemical membrane unit in which hydrogen is separated off as permeate (6a) at a temperature of 100 to 250 ° C,
  • V the retentate (8) of the membrane unit is returned to the natural gas stream, fed to chemical recycling and / or used as fuel.
  • the present invention also includes a method for determining the optimized partial gas flow that is withdrawn from a pipeline carrying natural gas and hydrogen in order to separate hydrogen from this partial gas flow in an electrochemical membrane unit.
  • Hydrogen offers the desired prerequisites to become a key factor for the energy supply of the future.
  • the transport sector in particular is facing the great challenge of becoming more climate-friendly. In Germany, traffic is responsible for almost 20 percent of total CO2 emissions, a good half of which is accounted for by private transport.
  • the transport sector can reduce its dependence on petroleum-based fuels.
  • the electricity or hydrogen required to operate the vehicles is produced from renewable energy sources.
  • hydrogen is being introduced as a new fuel that does not produce any local pollutants when used with fuel cell technology. In order to be able to use hydrogen in fuel cell applications, it must be of a very high quality, since impurities have an impact on catalysts and membranes.
  • Hydrogen is currently mainly produced centrally in comparatively large steam methane reformers (SMR) production units.
  • SMR steam methane reformers
  • the hydrogen is then highly compressed (up to 500 bar) and in rare cases also liquefied in order to bring it to the place where it is needed by means of suitable transport vehicles, for example at a hydrogen filling station.
  • H2 production processes include electrolysis, pyrolysis, partial oxidation of hydrocarbons (POx), coal gasification processes and biogas production processes.
  • H2-carrying gases in pipelines can in principle be all known to the person skilled in the art. Examples are: L gas, H gas, natural gas, city gas, town gas, biogas, but also e.g. C02.
  • Typical natural gas compositions are:
  • Examples of typical pipelines are long-distance transport pipelines with an overpressure of 30 to 220 bar, high-pressure pipelines 1 to 10 bar, medium-pressure pipelines 100 mbar to 1 bar, low-pressure pipelines 10 to 100 mbar.
  • Hydrogen-retaining separation processes are membrane processes, sorption processes or distillation processes.
  • Sorption processes can be physical or chemical in nature:
  • metal hydride stores or liquid organic hydrogen carriers can be used as chemical sorption processes.
  • the hydrogen temporarily forms a strong chemical bond with the metal hydride or the LOHC (e.g. carbazole).
  • the binding energy released in the process has to be used again when separating the hydrogen from the metal hydride or from the LOHC. Since the binding energy released during sorption is always at a lower temperature level than the The energy required for desorption, chemical sorption processes are always associated with losses, usually in the order of magnitude of> 25% of the energy content of the separated hydrogen.
  • both pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and temperature swing adsorption (temperature swing adsorption or TSA) can be considered as physical sorption processes.
  • PSA pressure swing adsorption
  • TSA temperature swing adsorption
  • These adsorption processes are particularly economical with small amounts of substance to be separated off.
  • swing adsorption all gas components except hydrogen would be separated and only the hydrogen would remain in the product gas flow. This means that 90% and more of the natural gas-hydrogen mixture would have to be adsorbed. In this concentration range, the physical adsorption processes are therefore extremely uneconomical.
  • H2 hydrogen molecules
  • a membrane for the pressure-driven, passive processes, but larger gas molecules such as CH4 or C02 cannot.
  • a membrane consists of a thin palladium layer that is applied to a porous substrate layer.
  • the palladium layer is responsible for the selectivity and the porous substrate layer for the mechanical strength of the membrane, which must be very high because of the large pressure difference across the membrane that is necessary for the separation.
  • the driving force for the separation here is a partial pressure difference: If, for example, the natural gas-hydrogen mixture in the pipeline is under a pressure of 20 bar and the hydrogen content in the natural gas is to be reduced to 1% by volume, then the lowest hydrogen partial pressure would be in the pipeline
  • the compression effort in this case is very high, especially since the compression, for example from 0.2 bar to 2 bar, requires roughly the same amount of mechanical energy as from 2 to 20 or from 20 to 200 bar.
  • the size and thus the costs of gas compressors are linked to the volume flow. At 0.2 bar, for example, this is 10 times greater than at 2 bar and 100 times greater than at 20 bar.
  • the gas compressors are correspondingly expensive at low inlet pressures.
  • the electrochemical hydrogen separation is an electrochemical process that is based on the transport of protons (H + ions) through ion-conductive membranes and represents a new application of fuel cell technology (see WO 2016/50500 and WO 2010/115768).
  • the hydrogen-containing mixture enters the anodic chamber, where it is oxidized to protons and electrons.
  • An electrical power supply provides the driving force to transport the protons through the catalyzed membrane, where they combine at the cathode to form "new" hydrogen (also known as "evolving hydrogen” at the electrode).
  • the flow of protons and flow of electrons correspond to one another.
  • the voltage required for the flow of protons or electrons depends on both the partial pressure difference and the catalyst activity.
  • the catalyst activity in turn depends on how little or how much it is deactivated by trace gases such as CO, C02 or H2S.
  • the EHS is thus able to produce hydrogen with a high degree of purity (> 99.99% H2).
  • Electrochemical, active processes such as EHS could be superior to pressure-driven, passive processes for this application.
  • EHS low-temperature processes which take place in the temperature range ⁇ 100 ° C, there are well-founded concerns about the sulfur-containing trace gases and CO that are always present in natural gas, which can very quickly deactivate the catalysts required for the membrane process mainly based on platinum.
  • the advantage of the electrochemically active EHS process is that hydrogen can be transported against the partial pressure difference. This technology is therefore suitable for both the depletion of hydrogen in the natural gas network to well below 1 vol% H2 and for working at a high operating pressure.
  • HyGrid describes, for example, a hybrid system of three different separation processes for the separation of H2 from natural gas pipelines containing H2. Then, in the first step, a passive membrane process based on Pd membranes is to be used for the reduction from 10 to 2% H2 in the natural gas pipeline and then for the concentration range below 2%
  • H2 can be further depleted in the natural gas pipeline using an EHS process.
  • EHS EHS
  • HyGrid uses the abbreviation for the electrochemical H2 separation EHP.
  • a sulfonic acid-based Nafion membrane is used.
  • the hydrogen resulting from the two separation processes should then be dried in a TSA.
  • the EHP used for this hybrid system works in the low temperature range and is therefore very susceptible to irreparable damage to the catalyst caused by catalyst poisons in natural gas such as CO or H2S.
  • the technology is based on so-called low-temperature PEM membrane electrode units, which were developed for fuel cells that are operated with pure hydrogen.
  • the oxidation of hydrogen and the reduction of oxygen to water are based on platinum catalysts, which are irreversibly deactivated by even the smallest amounts of CO, etc.
  • the EHP used for this hybrid system requires a high water vapor partial pressure, typically 100% relative humidity, in order to prevent the membrane from drying out and to maintain conductivity.
  • the gas mixture must therefore be saturated with water before separation, typically with a relative humidity of 100%, and the hydrogen must be dehumidified again after separation.
  • the separation technology used must be adapted to the structure and the required limit values, for example with regard to the permitted content of water in the natural gas mixture.
  • the water dew point is -8 ° C and lower under ambient conditions in order to prevent damage in the downstream pipeline system as a result of corrosion or the formation of hydrate.
  • the water content in the saturation state must not be higher than approx. 74 mg / m 3 .
  • H2 separation If technologies are used for H2 separation that require a high water vapor partial pressure, e.g. saturation state for H2 separation and this H2 separation takes place at higher temperatures, e.g. at 20 to 160 ° C, then the H2 -containing natural gas mixture water, which has to be separated from the natural gas mixture again after the H2 separation.
  • a high water vapor partial pressure e.g. saturation state for H2 separation and this H2 separation takes place at higher temperatures, e.g. at 20 to 160 ° C
  • EP 2477725 B1 or EP 0 907400 A1 provide an overview of the state of the art with regard to the method for drying natural gas.
  • the natural gas mixture has to be moistened according to the requirements of the individual separation technologies and then dried again, with drying in particular being an expensive process step.
  • the natural gas mixture must be brought to the appropriate temperature required for separation. This is especially true for the palladium-based ceramic membrane, which is operated at approx. 400 ° C, and for the phosphoric acid-based EHS membrane, which is operated at temperatures of up to 200 ° C
  • JP2008248934 describes the partial gas extraction without disclosing corresponding natural gas pre-treatment and post-treatment steps and does not give any recommendations regarding the partial gas quantity to be used.
  • EP 2 979 743 B1 describes a device and a method for storing and distributing renewable energy.
  • the focus of the application lies in the intermediate storage of the hydrogen separated from the H2-carrying natural gas mixture, which can then be returned to the natural gas mixture as required.
  • Natural gas pre-treatment and post-treatment steps are up to the need for a corresponding storage pressure not mentioned and recommendations regarding the partial gas quantity are only given to the extent that they must enable the desired H2 concentration to be set in the natural gas pipeline.
  • WO 2019/180032 describes a method for separating hydrogen from gas mixtures with the aid of a combination of two membranes.
  • the permeate of the first membrane stage, a passive gas membrane is moistened with water and passed into a second membrane stage, an electro-chemical membrane.
  • the permeate from this second membrane stage is dried and sent to the H2 consumer.
  • the retentate from the second membrane stage is compressed and dried before being fed back into the natural gas pipeline.
  • a disadvantage of this method is that two membrane stages are required.
  • Another disadvantage of this two-stage process is that the pressure for the first membrane stage must be high.
  • the H2 separation in the first membrane stage takes place via a partial pressure difference. If the desired H2 partial pressure on the permeate side of at least 1 bar, this means that the pressure in the natural gas pipeline must be greater than 10 bar, for example, if the H2 concentration in the natural gas pipeline is 10% by volume and, for example, must be 20 bar if the H2 concentration in the natural gas pipeline is 5 vol%.
  • the majority of natural gas pipelines however, have a pressure of less than 10 bar.
  • a separate compressor must be installed in front of the first membrane stage to increase the pressure.
  • WO 2019/180032 the entire pipeline flow is passed over this first membrane stage. As a result, this gas membrane has to be dimensioned correspondingly large and the pressure loss, which cannot be neglected, has to be compensated for for the entire pipeline flow.
  • the challenge for the future lies among other things (i) in the cost-effective, decentralized supply of high-purity hydrogen, e.g. for refueling hydrogen cars or the operation of fuel cells for the decentralized supply of electricity.
  • low-hydrogen natural gas should be made available at low cost, e.g. for the glass industry, chemical use or storage in caverns.
  • the object of the present invention was thus to show a process that can separate hydrogen from a pipeline, in particular from a pipeline with low overpressure, with the help of just a single membrane stage and thus shows an inexpensive decentralized supply of high-purity hydrogen.
  • the object of the present invention was also to show an optimized partial gas quantity that is to be separated from a pipeline, in which the lowest hydrogen separation costs are incurred using an EHS.
  • a single-stage membrane process for the electrochemical separation of hydrogen from natural gas streams in a pipeline (1) which has an overpressure in the range from 50 mbar to 100 bar which has the following process steps (FIG. 1): (i) from the Natural gas flow in a pipeline (1), a partial gas flow (2) is withdrawn without changing the gas composition, the mass flow of the partial gas flow being adjusted as a function of the hydrogen content in the natural gas flow (1) is that with a hydrogen concentration of ⁇ 10 vol .-% a degree of depletion of 0.65 to 0.975 is achieved and a hydrogen concentration of> 10 vol .-% a degree of depletion of 0.55 to 0.925 is achieved, the degree of depletion as The quotient of the desired molar H2 product stream (6) and the molar H2 starting material stream of the partial gas stream at the inlet of the membrane unit (2) is defined,

Wasserstoff:
TSA) in Frage.
Schritt (i):
AG = nH2,Pr/nTG,H2, α
CO (3%) and H2S (15 ppm) erreicht werden.
B. in Tankstellen.
AG = nH2,Pr/nTG,H2, α
YPL,H2,α in Vol% = nPL;H2 / (nPL;EG + nPL;H2) = YPL;H2,α / (1 + YPL;H2,α )
Δr = 0,1 bar: AGopt = 0,48 bis 0,9993; 0,55 bis 0,997; 0,65 bis 0,987
Δr = 1 ,0 bar: AGopt = 0,56 bis 0,99992; 0,63 bis 0,9994; 0,73 bis 0,996
Δr = 10,0 bar: AGopt = 0,66 bis 0,99999; 0,72 bis 0,99998; 0,81 bis 0,9997
MH2 = Molmasse des Wasserstoffes = 2,0159 g/mol
GTIH2,RG = gewünschter reiner Wasserstoffmassenstrom (6a)
Vorteile:
Die im Gasgemischstrom 1 enthaltene molare CH4-Menge npL.crw, « ist npL,cH4, a = npL, a - npL,H2, a - npL,H2o, a = 1984,2 - 198,4 - 3,97 = 1781 ,83 kmol/h (1.4)
YpL,H2,a = Pr|_,H2, a / Prί;OH4, a = 198,4 / 1781 ,83 = 0, 111 (1.5)
YpL,H20, a = npL,H2Q,a / Prί,OH4, a = 3,97 / 1781,83 = 0,00223 (1.6)
Der für einen Tankstellenbetrieb gewünschten H2-Produktmengenstrom nH2,prist nH2,RG= mH2;Pr / MH2 = 40 kg/h / 2 kg/kmol = 20 kmol/h (1.7)
2) Teilqasstrom
AG = (nTG,H2,a - nTG,H2,Cö) / nTG,H2,a = nTG,H2, X = 0,990 (2.1) mit der im Teilgasstrom 2 am Eintritt der EHS enthaltenen H2-Menge hto,H2,a und der am Austritt der EHS im Teilgasstrom 8 verbleibenden Menge nTG,H2,a> , dann ist damit direkt verknüpft die gesamte aus dem Pipelinestrom abgezogene im Teilgasstrom 2 enthaltene Teilgasmenge nTG,a = (1 / AG) * (1 + 1 / YRL,H2 ,a) * nH2,pr = 200 kmol/h (2.2)
X - PH2,RG / Pri_,H2,a - 0,100 (2.5)
P1 = mTG ,a * (R * TPL / MPL / T|Verd) * In ((pi + Dr) / Pi) = 12 kW (3.1)
Pverd = P1 / mH2,pr = KVerd * (1 / AG) * (1 + 1 / YRL,H2 ,a) * In ((pi + Dr) / Pi) = 0,30 kWe,/kg H2(3.4) mit
Kverd - R * TPL / MH2 / hverd - 0,49 kWe|/kg H2 (3.5)
Und einem abgeleiteten Verdichterwirkungsgrad r|verd von
^lVerd 0,70 (3.6)
Q1 = miG,a * cpiG * (XEHS XPL) = 253 kW (4.2)
Q2 = GPto,a * CPTG * (XPL XTrocknung) = 8 kW (4.3)
IEHS = 2 * nH2, pr * F = 1.063.600 A (5.1)
Mit F = 96485 AS / mol (5.2)
Formel:
UEHS.min - Ku.min In (PKathode / (PAnode YTG,H2,®) — 0,127 V (5.3) mit
Ku.min = R * TEHS / 2 / F = 0,019 V (5.4) mit der idealen Gaskonstanten R
R = 8,314 J/mol K (5.5) und dem H2-Partialdruck im Kathodenraum PH2, Kathode = 1,013 bar
PH2, Kathode = PKathode * YH2,Kothode = 1,013 bar (5.6) mit YH2, Kathode = 1 und
PAnode = 1,013 bar (5.7)
YTG,H2K> - 1 / (1 + (1 + YTG,H2O w) / YPL,H2 a / (1 - AG)) - 0,0011 (5.9)
YTG,H2O,CX= YpL,H2o,a= 0,00223 (6-1) und
YTG,H20,CÖ - (1 + Yp|_,H2,a/ (1 / yTG,H20,CÖ - 1) - 0,0285 (6.2)
Folgt mit Gleichung (2.4)
An G,H2o= n G,cH4 * (YTG;H2O,K>— YTG,H2o,ct) = 4,73 kmol H20/h (6-3) bzw.
AmTG,H2o= AniG,H2o* M;H2O = 85,1 kg H20/h (6-4)
Kcai,H2o = 2,29 kWhcH4/kg H20 (6.4) an thermischer Energie benötigt.
7) Trennaufwand
TAges = TAvar TAfix (7.1)
Daraus folgt taVar= 4,29 / 4,0 + 0,44 + 4,84 + 2,19 = 8,50 kWei/kg H20 (7.4)
KF = 2 * F / MH2 / 3600 = 26,59 Ah/kg H2 (7,6) und
Ct opt = (Mp|_ / 2) * (1 / AGvar.opt) * (1 + 1 / YpL,H2,a) * 2 (7-9)
