Definitions
- the present invention relates to the use of natural polymers of the protein family not exhibiting enzymatic activity as sacrificial materials for 3D modeling by deposition of molten filaments.
- Such materials exhibit rapid solubilization or dispersibility in water while combining the ideal thermomechanical properties to make wires or rods that can be used in 3D printing (modeling by deposition of molten filaments).
- These materials are also derived from a natural resource and are biodegradable.
- this technology makes it possible to manufacture in an additive manner (in English: “additive manufacturing” or AM) a real object from a virtual object. It is based on cutting the 3D virtual object into very thin 2D slats. These thin strips are deposited one by one by fixing them on the previous ones, which reconstitutes the real object.
- constituent materials of the object there are plastic materials (in particular acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (or ABS) and polylactic acid (or PLA)), wax, metal or ceramics.
- FFF fuse filament fabrication
- laser sintering in English “laser sintering”.
- Modeling by deposition of molten filaments is a mechanical technique which consists in melting a synthetic material filament (generally ABS or PLA type plastic) through an extrusion nozzle heated to a temperature varying between 160 and 270 ° C. From this nozzle emerges a molten filament, with a diameter of the order of a tenth of a millimeter. This wire is deposited in line and comes to stick by re-fusion on what was deposited beforehand.
- This technique makes it possible to create parts in good material, having mechanical, thermal and stability characteristics identical to injected thermoplastic parts.
- This technique also has an important advantage concerning the support structure necessary for the production of the parts, also extruded jointly, since this construction support is in most cases made of a material other than that constituting the object created, material which is eliminated from said object, when the construction process of the latter is finished.
- the construction support is generally a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymeric composition meeting very specific specifications.
- desired properties in addition to mechanical strength, the glass transition temperature of the copolymer which must be close to the material to be printed, its thermal stability or its ease of use, the kinetics of solubilization or dispersibility in water is first importance.
- This 3D printing technique requires support materials allowing the construction of complex parts, this is for example described in WO2010 / 045147.
- Other support materials include:
- the major drawbacks are: the nature of the support materials, as well as the medium in which the latter are solubilized and / or dispersed.
- the support materials are mainly derived from fossil resources. In addition, they dissolve under specific conditions: solvent, high pH, temperature. These support polymers can only be used by professionals and not by individuals.
- the degradation / water solubilized products are not biodegradable in this medium. It is therefore undesirable to use them in a domestic environment where wastewater is routed to treatment stations that cannot handle these products.
- a new formulation based on proteins, additives and optionally enzyme has been developed for use as a carrier material.
- This formulation has the advantage of constituting a material dedicated to 3D printing and the enzymes present make it possible to improve the dispersibility in water available domestically (“tap water”).
- This formulation is easily and quickly dissolved or even hydrolyzed.
- the proteins used are biodegradable polymers.
- polyesters can be used as printable materials. However, they do not have the properties of being both soluble in an aqueous medium and of having good mechanical properties (similar to the properties of the printed material).
- Polylactic acid is also a biodegradable polymer (compostable in an industrial environment, but not degradable in aqueous medium) but which is soluble only in solvents such as dichloromethane, THF, chloroform.
- the proteins used in this formulation can be associated with an enzyme so that they can be dispersed under mild conditions.
- the 3D printed material with its sacrificial composition can be placed in a dishwasher with a dose of commercial soap which will give the appropriate pH to facilitate dissolution and dispersion; and in the event of a need for an acidic pH for formulation with an enzyme, a dose of household vinegar could be added to the compartment of the dishwasher.
- a dose of baking powder sodium bicarbonate
- the formulation proposed here is based on a formulation containing a protein, a plasticizer (s), a surfactant and, where appropriate, at least one enzyme.
- This formulation makes it possible to have a material which can be printed in 3D and which supports the printed material.
- the addition of enzymes quickly makes this formulation hydrolyzable under domestic conditions.
- the formulation also comprises a filler.
- the invention therefore relates to the use of a composition as a sacrificial material for 3D modeling by deposition of molten filaments, this composition comprising:
- solubilization or dispersibility in water is understood to mean solubilization or dispersibility in an aqueous phase whose pH is between 5.5 and 14, limits included and at a temperature between 25 and 70 ° C.
- a copolymer is said to be “dispersible” if it forms, at a concentration of 5% by weight in a solvent, at 25 ° C., a stable suspension of fine particles, generally spherical.
- the average size of the particles constituting said dispersion is less than 1 ⁇ m and, more generally, varies between 5 and 400 nm, preferably from 10 to 250 nm by weight. These particle sizes are measured by light scattering.
- the proteins of animal or plant origin which can be used in the context of the invention can be the following in a nonlimiting manner: Gelatins, fibril proteins, whey, albumin, keratin, proteins from soy, wheat, corn or from other plants, or even caseins and caseinates. Preferably they are caseins or caseinates.
- the proportions of the compositions used in the invention can be as follows:
- the proportions of caseins or caseinates are between 50 and 90% by weight of the composition used in the invention.
- casein any type of caseins or caseinates and preferably caseinates.
- the proportions of water are between 5 and 25% by mass of the composition used in the invention.
- plasticizers present in the composition used in the invention may be any type of plasticizer and in particular glycerol, the proportions of which may vary from 5 to 25% by weight.
- Enzymes can be added to the composition. They allow the hydrolysis of the protein (s) used in the composition: they can also be added later, when placing the object in the dishwasher.
- the compositions used in the invention can be shaped in the form of an extruded filament, these extruded filaments also being the subject of the invention.
- compositions used in the compositions of the invention may contain fillers. Their nature and quantities may vary.
- fillers which can be used in the compositions used in the invention, it may be an inorganic or organic filler or both, in the form of powder or of fibers.
- the mineral fillers can be chalk, carbonates, talcs or clays, and preferably carbonates, more particularly calcium carbonate.
- the organic fillers can be sugars, preferably wood flour, fruit peel or stone, vegetable fibers such as cotton, wood, cellulose pulp or starches. Certain polymers such as polyethylene glycols fall within this scope.
- a typical composition of this further aspect of the invention will include the following:
- the invention also relates to the objects obtained by using the compositions of the invention.
- the mixture of reagents for the formulation of the invention is as follows:
- the formulation is stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes and then heated to a temperature of 160 ° C. in a compression press to form a pellet 2.5 cm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness.
- the formulation described is compared with commercial sacrificial polymers: commercial grade 1 (3D Gence ESM 10 from the company 3D Gence) and commercial grade 2 (13 CGPH00713% elvaloy reference SR 30 from the Stratasys company). They are sacrificial polymers (meth) acrylic soluble at pH 12 and 60 ° C tested in the form of pellets according to the same protocol as for the invention.
- Example 2 The mixture of reagents for the formulation of the invention is as follows:
- composition is extruded with a thermal profile below 100 ° C.
- a filament is obtained.
- This filament can be wound ( Figure 1) and be used as a sacrificial support in a polymer 3D printing device, and then be removed by dissolution.

Description
DESCRIPTION
