Description

Vaporizer
Description
The present invention is directed to a smoking article. In the state of the art it is known to use flavor releasing elements, for example to at least partially limit the smoke taste. Furthermore, consumers appreciate the taste released by those releasing devices. However, these smoke releasing devices are usually complicated to handle and not consumer-friendly. Furthermore, those releasing devices are usually not very versatile as to different flavors. Another problem arising with devices known from the state of the art is that usually a long heating up time is required. Also in some cases a high variability in taste and vapour volume arises from puff to puff
It is therefore an object of the invention to enhance the versatility of those smoke releasing devices. This object is reached by the object of claim 1 . Preferred embodiments of the inven tions are object of the subclaims. A vaporizer according to the invention comprises a mouth piece, wherein this mouth piece is in fluid connection with a vaporizing section and wherein the vaporizing section comprises at least a first vaporizing substance and a heater to heat the vaporizable substance.
According to the invention, the vaporizer comprises a substance cartridge comprising the at least vaporizable substance, wherein the vaporizable substance is provided as a substance section on or as a tape and the substance section is arranged movable in a predefined transport direction in the substance cartridge. It is therefore suggested to provide a cartridge which holds a tape on which the vaporizable substance is present. In a preferred embodiment a cartridge comprises a first bobbin on which the tape is arranged. Preferably, the cartridge or the vaporizer also comprises a sec ond bobbin, on which the tape can be arranged and can be arranged especially during use of the vaporizer.
In a preferred embodiment, the cartridge is detachable from other elements of the vaporizer, especially from a housing of the vaporizer. In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer may comprise switches or the like, which indicate if a cartridge is correctly inserted into a housing of the vaporizer. Especially, the vaporizer may comprise a recess, into which the cartridge can be inserted and into which it can be inserted especially in a unique manner.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizable substance and / or the tape is movable with respect to the heater. In another preferred embodiment, the tape and / or the vaporizable substance is movable with respect to a housing of the cartridge. In another preferred embod iment, the housing of the cartridge is formed of a plastics material.
Preferably, it is possible to remove the cartridge together with a used tape.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer comprises a connection and especially an electrical connection, especially for charging a battery of the vaporizer. This electrical con nection could be for example an USB port.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizing section comprises at least two substance sections which differ from each other in at least one characteristic feature. It is for example possible that these two sections comprise two different vaporizable substances, for example two different flavors. These different flavors may for example arise from added (liquid) flavors but also from different base materials as for example different tobacco sheets. However, it is also possible that these two sections comprise a vaporizable substance in different concen trations. In both cases it is possible that the user selects, which of the two sections should be heated. In another preferred embodiment, the two substance sections are essentially parallel to each other and preferably extend in the transport direction. It is possible that the whole tape com prises two sections which extend preferably in a length direction of this tape. Therefore, pref erably at any section of the tape, both substance sections are present.
It is also possible that the two sections also differ from one another in their amount, their po rosity, the density of the substance and the like.
In another preferred embodiment, the two substance sections are separated from each other. Therefore, preferably the tape may comprise a separating strip, which separates the two substance sections from each other.
In a preferred embodiment, the two substance sections have a distance from each other which is greater than 0.2 mm, preferably 0.4 mm and preferably 0.6 mm.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the two substance sections have a dis tance to each other which is smaller than 2 mm, preferably smaller than 1.5 mm und prefera bly smaller than 1 mm.
This separation serves to delimit the two substance sections from each other and to avoid that the heating element heats both sections at a time. Also, the heating element may com prise two sections which preferably independently from each other are able to heat the two substance sections.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer comprises a selector to allow the user to select between the two substance sections. Into more detail, this selector allows a user to select, which of the two substance sections is to be heated and therefor especially vaporized.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer has a drive to move the substance section in the transport direction. Here for example, an electric motor may be comprised which allows the transport of the substance sections. Preferably, this drive is arranged in the vaporizer itself and preferably not in the cartridge. However, the vaporizer may comprise a mechanical connector to connect the drive to one or to two bobbins of the cartridge.
In another preferred embodiment, the drive is suited to non-continuously transport the tape and / or the substance sections. It is for example possible that the vaporizer transports the substance sections and / or the tape between puffs that are made by a user. In a preferred embodiment, the vaporizer may comprise a flow sensor which is suited to detect a puff made by a consumer.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises guiding devices for guiding the tape at least sectionwise along its transport path. Especially these guiding means are suited to prevent a displacement of the tape in a direction perpendicular to the transport direction and also especially in a direction which is in a plane of transport of the tape.
For example, guiding rollers could be used which comprise at least one and preferably two protrusions or guiding means like guiding walls at the lateral sides of the tape and of the roll ers. These guiding walls can define roller limits of the respective roller. The tape can be guided between these guiding means. In this way the tape can be kept on track. Preferably the tape is essentially homogenous in structure so that the guiding can be facilitated.
In another preferred embodiment guiding means like rollers can comprise or be made of ma terials that improve the heat efficiency of the device. For example, for the rollers heat insulat ing materials could be used. For example, at least one or several guiding rollers could be made of ceramics instead of metal. Also, plastics materials could be used for the rollers.
In another embodiment rollers for transporting the tape could have a circular cross section but also a cross section other than a circular cross section. For example, the cross section could be shaped polygonal, for example in the shape of an octagon. The corners of this poly gon or for example octagon could be edged or also rounded.
In another preferred embodiment an insulating is provided to thermally insulate the heater with respect to other parts of the vaporizer as for example the mouthpiece. In this way an undesired heating up of the mouthpiece can be avoided. In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a control device for controlling the transport of the tape. For example, a sensor device could be provided which detects that a certain number of puffs has been made so that the tape will be transported to another posi tion. Also, a detector device can be provided that detects if the smoke does not contain any more evaporated substances or only a content below a preset limit.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention paper rolls and/or guiding rolls are provided to guide the tape. However also a manual system could be provided by which the consumer manually transports the tape.
In another preferred embodiment the heater can heat the tape to different temperatures. This could be achieved by providing varying electrical currents to the heater. For example, higher temperatures could be used if stronger puffs are detected.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a detection device which is suited to detect a contact between a lip and the user and the mouthpiece of the vaporizer. A control device can be comprised which in response to a detected contact between the lip of the user and the mouthpiece initiates a heating of the tape. In this manner an easy change between a standby state and an active state of the device is possible.
Also, it would be possible that a detection device is provided that detects a contact between a hand of the user and the vaporizer. Also, here the heater can be activated if such a contact is detected.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a soaker device which serves to soak the tape in a vaporizable liquid. In this embodiment the tape can be first soaked in or through the vaporizable matter and then be heated. In this embodiment it would be possible to guide the tape in a closed loop manner. Preferably this soaker device comprises a reser voir for a vaporizable material. Preferably this soaker device is refillable. Furthermore, a transfer device can be provided which transfers the vaporizable material from the soaker device to the tape.
In another preferred embodiment the heater comprises a coating, especially on a surface to be contacted by the tape. This coating could be for example a special coating for achieving less friction. Also, a better heat efficiency of the vaporizer can be reached in this manner.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises tensioners to improve the tension of the tape, especially during transport. For example, spring loaded rollers could be provided to increase the tension of the tape to be transported.
In another embodiment the vaporizer comprises perforation elements to perforate the tape. These perforations can serve to increase an air flow through the tape. For example, rollers comprising pins could be provided which perforate the tape running over these rollers.
In another preferred embodiment the heater may comprise openings that allow a passage of gases. For example, the heater could have a grill design which allows the passage of air. Also, the heater could comprise holes that allow a passage of a gas and/or air.
In another preferred embodiment the heater is an induction heater. In this embodiment an induction coil could be provided which heats a heating element. Preferably the tape could be guided between the induction coil and the heating element.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a controller to control the move ment of the tape and / or the substance section. In another preferred embodiment, at least one substance section is arranged as a strip which extends in a transport direction and pref erably extends continuously in the transport direction. Preferably, the substance is present on a carrier. In another preferred embodiment, the said carrier is permeable.
In another very preferred embodiment, the heater is suited to heat small sections of the tape. Therefore, the heater may have a heating element, which is suited to heat a small section, which extends both in a transport direction of the tape and as well in direction perpendicular to this transport direction. In another preferred embodiment, the said sections are in flow connection with the above-mentioned mouth piece.
In another preferred embodiment, the cartridge has as frame and / or a housing with respect to which the tape moves. The moving of the tape serves to avoid dry puffs. In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a temperature sensor. For exam ple, thermocouples or resistance sensors could be used. However, it is also possible that an infrared-based temperature sensor is provided.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer comprises a thermal insulation between the heater and other parts of the device.
In another preferred embodiment, the tape comprises an impregnated sheet. It is for example possible that the sheet is impregnated with substances like glycerin, propylene glycol and / or flavor.
In another preferred embodiment the heater comprises at least one capacitor. In a preferred embodiment, the vaporizer comprises a filter which preferably is arranged between the mouth piece and the vaporizing section.
In another preferred embodiment, the above-mentioned cartridge is replaceable.
The present invention is also directed to a substance cartridge for vaporizers and especially for vaporizers as described in the above. This cartridge comprises at least one vaporizable substance, wherein the vaporizable substance is provided as a substance section on a tape and the substance section is arranged movable in a predefined transport direction in the substance cartridge, wherein the vaporizing section comprises at least two substance sec tions which differ from each other in at least one characteristic feature.
The invention is furthermore directed to a vaporizer comprising a mouth piece wherein the mouth piece is in fluid connection with a vaporizing section and wherein the vaporizing sec tion comprises a heater to heat vaporizable substance. According to the invention, the heater is suited to heat the vaporizable section and the vaporizable substance is provided as a sub stance portion on or as a tape.
In a preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a seat for a cartridge. It is therefore pref erably possible that the cartridge can be manually inserted or removed into or from the va porizer. In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer can comprise at least one and preferably two carriers for carrying tape reels and or tape bobbins. Preferably, the vaporizer comprises a drive, which is able to turn the said carriers.
In another preferred embodiment, the vaporizer comprises a drive and / or a motor for moving a tape.
In another preferred embodiment the heater has a first heating segment to heat a first section of the tape and a second heating segment to heat a second section of the tape, wherein preferably the two heating segments or sections can be controlled independently of each other.
In another preferred embodiment the heating segments are parallel to each other in a transport direction of the tape. In another preferred embodiment the substance tape is direct ly inserted into the vaporizer.
In this embodiment the vaporizer may comprise a seat and / or reception area for the sub stance band.
In a preferred embodiment, the drive is included in the vaporizer and therefore the drive ele ment is not replaced when a cartridge is replaced.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a tensioning device for the tape.
This tensioning device may be for example an element which controls the drive to move the tape section. Also tensioning elements comprising springs or the like might be used. In an other preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a guiding means to guide the tape along the heater and especially along a heating surface of the heater. It is also possible that the guiding means and or the tensioning means comprises at least one and preferably two more rollers between which the tape is guided.
In another preferred embodiment the vaporizer comprises a calculator to calculate or meas ure a length of the tape. Also, this calculator may measure, how much tape already had been used. Therefore, for example a user may be informed that the tape has to be replaced soon. In another preferred embodiment the drive is suited to move the tape in a non-continuous manner.
In another preferred embodiment the invention therefore suggests bobbinized and / or rolled substrates, especially tobacco substrates such as reconstituted, sheet tobacco (RTB/RTS), cigar binder, and the like, which are preferably impregnated with vaping agents, especially in a cartridge.
The above-mentioned heater is preferably an electric driven heater, it however would also be possible that the heater is a gas driven heater.
The present invention therefore provides an immediate readiness to use, a very low heating up time, low thermal insulation requirements and also a comparatively low temperature of the device shell or housing.
Furthermore, the invention provides a constant puff-by-puff vaping experience and also a minimized inter-puff variability.
Also, the device allows a daily consumption of for example 100 puffs and no spill, cleaning or refilling procedure. The fast heating up time is especially reached by the low mass of the material which has to be heated.
In a preferred embodiment, the transporter is suited to transport the tape and / or the specific quantity of fresh material, for example the quantity which is required for one puff into a heat ing area at the moment of the next puff.
In another preferred embodiment, a diameter of the tape might be in a region between 2 mm and 30 mm, preferably between 4 mm and 20 mm and most preferably between 8 mm and 12 mm.
In another preferred embodiment the device provides an area of evaporation of the material, which is greater than 20 mm2, preferably greater than 30 mm2, preferably greater than 40 mm2, preferably greater than 50 mm2, preferably greater than 60 mm2, preferably greater than 70 mm2.
In another preferred embodiment the device provides an area of evaporation of the material, which is smaller than 500mm2, preferably smaller than 400mm2, preferably smaller than 200mm2, preferably smaller than 100mm2 .
In another preferred embodiment, the area of evaporation is selected such that per puff a mass of between 5 and 100 mg, preferably 15 to 40 mg, more preferably between 20 and 30 mg are in the heating area. Detailed investigations of the applicant have shown that the men tioned quantities are in a good region to on the one hand reach sufficient material for a puff made by the user and on the other hand reach a fast heating of the material by the heating device is reached.
In another preferred embodiment, the heater provides a temperature range which is between 100°C and 400°C, preferably between 150°C and 350°C and very preferably between 180°C and 250°C. In another preferred embodiment the heater allows a heating range, which is greater than 100°C/s, preferably greater than 200°C/s and preferably greater than 300°C/s. Preferably, a control device is provided, which allows the heating only when a puff is made.
In another preferred embodiment the tape and / or the material to be heated is air permeable. This serves especially to enable air flow from the mesh through the material.
In a preferred embodiment the tape is porous and/or perforated or especially pre-perforated. In a preferred embodiment, a porosity level (measured in CU (Coresta Unit)) may be be tween 50 and 30.000 CU, preferably 1000 to 10000, preferably 2000 to 6000 CU
In another preferred embodiment of the invention after or before each puff the consumed matter is transported away from the heating zone and a new matter is transported into the heating zone. So for example in such an embodiment a cartridge for rolled matter might con tain between 2 g and 8 g, which serve for about 100 puffs (as assumed daily consumption of a user). In another preferred embodiment the tape is provided as a single layer tape or a double layer tape. In another preferred embodiment, the heater is arranged stationary with respect to a housing of the device. In this case, the substrate is moved through a fixed heating position. However, it would also be conceivable that the heating position is changed or moved with respect to a fixed substrate.
In another preferred embodiment a static spot heating is reached during a puff. A control device controls the drive such that the substrate moves between puffs.
Preferably, the substrate moves across a heating zone. In another preferred embodiment it is also possible that other parts of the cartridge are heated, for example the roller device for heating and transport can be heated. In another preferred embodiment the heating device is an inductive heating device. In this case magnetic fields are used to produce the heating or to heat the heater.
The advantage of this embodiment is that it is very fast and also a fast temperature control is possible. In another preferred embodiment the device can be handled between temperatures of minus 15°C and plus 40°C. Also, handling should be possible in case of temperature jumps, for example when users using the device go from the inside of a heated room to the outside. Also, as mentioned above a gas heating would be possible. The heater can be for example an electric heater or a gas heater. Gas heaters might be advantageous for very low temperatures
A permanent heating would be possible but a non-permanent heating is advantageous for energy conservation. In another preferred embodiment both a battery or a feed and / or charge capacitor may be used for energizing the heater.
In a preferred embodiment a set of plurality capacitors is provided. It is possible to discharge all capacitors in a time between puffs if this time is long enough to avoid overheating. It is also possible to discharge only a part of those capacitors if the time between puffs is short. In this case, a flexible response to the required energy is provided. In a preferred embodiment the cartridge can have dimensions of about 40 mm to 80 mm in the length direction (this base is required for two bobbins of tape material and a heating zone between the two roles).
As mentioned above, the invention suggests also a two-track approach to enable the user to switch between two different taste experiences within one cartridge.
Preferably, both the vaping agent and flavor are identical. Therefore, a liquid migration can be avoided.
However, those two tracks can be different. Therefore, it is possible that the two tracks com prise a different porosity or different perforation levels for the same substrate.
It would also be possible that the two tracks comprise a different base tobacco substrate (for example paper sheet vs. cast-sheet or dark tobacco vs. bright tobacco. Also, combinations of these measures are conceivable.
In another embodiment also a tobacco free material would be possible. For example a po rous and/or perforated paper material with sufficient tensile strength could be used as a filter plug wrap (PW) and can be impregnated with for example PG/G/Flavor. In this case, the generated vapor does not contain any nicotine or taste originating directly from tobacco.
The objective of the invention is also reached by a substance cartridge for vaporizers characterized in that the cartridge comprises the at least one vaporizable substance, wherein the vaporizable substance is provided as a substance section on or as a tape, and the vaporizable substance is arranged movable in a predefined transport direction in the substance cartridge, wherein the vaporizable substance comprises at least two substance sections which differ from each other in at least one characteristic feature.
The objective of the invention is also reached by a vaporizer comprising a mouth piece, the mouth piece being in fluid connection with a vaporizing section, wherein the vaporizing sec tion comprises at least a first vaporizable substance and a heater to heat the vaporizable substance. The invention is characterized in that the heater is suited to heat a vaporizable substance the vaporizable substance being provided as a substance portion on or as a tape. Also this parting section 12c serves to prevent the two substance sections 12a, 12b interfering which each other. Also the heater 8 can comprise two heating sections (not shown) which can be controlled separately and which serve to heat exclusively one or the other of the two substance sec tions.
Figure 3 shows an example of a guide roller 50 according to the invention. As can be seen, this guide roller comprises a body 52 and two (disc like) edges 52a and 52b, between which the tape (not shown) can be guided. Therefore, the material will be kept in track. Preferably, the tobacco strip or the tape is homogeneous in structure to ensure that the path stays true.
It is furthermore possible to use a different material for the roller to reach a better heat effi ciency. Therefore, the heat loss can be limited.
It would also be conceivable that the roller has a shape which deviates from a circular shape, for example a polygonal shape. This would be comparatively easy to realize.
Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the tape 13 is soaked with a soaker device 60. Here it is possible that the tape is guided through this soak er to be soaked with material to be vaporized. The heater 8 heats the tape with the material and a puff P of vapor can be made.
In this case, a liquid application can be made through a center pipe in the roller. Therefore, for example a technology like in case of a ball pen could be used which touches and applies the medium to be vaporized.
Figure 5 shows another embodiment of the invention. In this case, a carrier 54 with through holes can be provided, which allow a better application of steam. For better orientation, Fig ure 8 also here refers to the heater. In principle the heating element could also be for exam ple a solid plate such as a solid metal plate. In this case however an air flow would be pre vented. Therefore, in one embodiment a “perforated” heating element is suggested, as for example a mesh. With such a perforated heating element an airflow is improved and the vape can be picked up into the desired airstream more efficiently.
Figure 6 shows another embodiment of the invention. Here, the tape is guided in a closed loop. The application of the substance can be made with an applicator 62, which touches the tape between rollers 55. Moreover, the rollers 50 comprise spring elements 51 , which im prove the tension of the tape when it’s guided along the heater 8.
It is noted however, that spring guides 50 can also be used in other embodiments of the in vention. Therefore, this spring tension can be used also for one-time use with a pre impregnation.
Figure7 shows another embodiment of the invention. Here, perforating rollers 84 are provid ed, which can be used to make perforations in the tape 12. The rollers may comprise small, for example needle-like protrusions. In another embodiment, the heater can be provided hav ing openings 82, through which the evaporated material can pass. In other words, the heater 8 has here a grill design to ensure precise heating steps while ensuring the proper air flow.
In a special embodiment, a double grill can be provided for increased heating from bottom to top. In other words, the heater here comprises a plurality of fingers between which a gaseous medium can pass. Also it is possible to guide the tape around this heater device and such create a kind of back wall with the guide so that the material increases the heat of the flavor in the heating area.
In a preferred embodiment, the heating device can be pressed against the tobacco material to even improve the heating efficiency. For the different rollers, for example a simple plastic pin could be used. However, it would also be possible that a pin together with a ball bearing or a cylinder bearing is used. In this way, the friction could be reduced.
Figure 8 shows another embodiment of a heating device. In this case, an induction heating device is used. The heater comprises an induction coil 94, which serves to heat a metal 92. The tape 12 is guided between the induction device 94 and the material 92 to be heated.
Figure 9 shows an embodiment in which the tape 12 is guided along the heater 8. A pressure device could be used to pressure the tape 12 against the heater 8.
The heater can here be formed as a “mesh-like” heater. Upon contact the air flows through the “mesh-like” heater 8, takes up vaping substances from the tape 12 and becomes the in- halable vape. Figure 10 shows another embodiment of a heater. In this embodiment, a plurality of flow holes is provided in the heater block to ensure an air flow. In a preferred embodiment the holes have a circular shape. Preferably a diameter of the holes is between 0.1 mm and 5.0mm, preferably between 0.5mm and 2.0mm, and more preferably between 0.5mm and
1 5mm. For density, the area ratio of holes ranges, irrespective of the pattern, between 5% and 90%, preferably between 20% and 70%, and more preferably between 30% and 50%. For square or rectangular mesh-like heater, the same ratios apply to meet the same area per hole ranges. Especially, in the case of square mesh, a hole diameter ranging from 0.1mm to 5.0mm corresponds to an area per hole ranging from 0.1 mm2 to 20 mm2, and hence a length of one side ranging from 0.1mm to 4.4mm.
In a preferred embodiment a pressure drop of the heater is higher than 20mmWC (mm water column), preferably higher than 50mmWC, preferably higher than 75mmWC. In another pre- ferred embodiment the pressure drop of the heater is lower than 200mmWC, preferably low er than 125mmWC, preferably lower than lOOmmWC.
