Gutes Schuhwerk ist vor allem aus gesundheitlichen, vorwiegend aus orthopädischen Gründen für den Menschen wichtig. Grundsätzlich lässt sich behaupten, dass gerade eine optimale Anpassung des Schuhwerks an die Physionomie des Fußes aus orthopädischer Sicht sinnvoll ist. Bisher sind die Möglichkeiten der Anpassung von Schuhen allerdings begrenzt. Man kauft sich neue Schuhe und stellt dann häufig erst nach mehrfachem Gebrauch fest, dass dieser dem Fuß in nicht ausreichender Weise angepasst ist. Häufig werden dann Einlegesohlen gekauft und eingesetzt, deren primärer Zweck orthopädisch ist und welche auf die Innensohle aufgelegt werden und damit die Funktion der "alten" Innensohle übernehmen, wobei dann die alte Innensohle entfernt werden muss und die neue genau der Form des Fußes entsprechen soll, weil es sonst zu Verlagerungen der Einlegesohlen und damit zu Schmerzen kommt. Besonders geeignet für Einlagen und Sandalen ist ein sog. Wechselfußbett. Man kann das Fußbett einfach komplett herausnehmen und durch eine individuelle Einlegesohle ersetzen. Der Schuh hat die perfekte Passform und der Fuß genügend Platz. Bei solchen Schuhen mit Wechselfußbett ist die Innensohle anders als bei regulären Fußbetten nicht verklebt, sondern liegt lose auf und kann unter Umständen verrutschen.
