Abstract
The invention is related to a cylindrical tank with vertical axis, consisting of a roof (1), shell (2) and bottom (3), wherein the shell consists of rectangular metal sheets (4), and the vertical edges of the sheets (4) are interconnected with a joint (5), characterized in that the joints interconnecting the sheets composing the tank shell are vertical joints only, and along the joint (5) there is a tightly fixed profile (6) enclosed at the top and at the bottom, which encloses the joint (5) from outside.
Description
- The invention is related to a cylindrical tank with vertical axis, used for storing liquids, especially fuel, characterized in that the welded joints of the tank shell (wall) are vertical, and on the outer side of the wall (shell) the joints are covered by a tightly welded steel profile, which enables the identification of a leakage occurring on the shell joint and which protects against a leak from inside of the tank in case of a leakage in the joint at the tank (wall).
- Prior art describes various solutions for cylindrical tanks that are used for storing liquids. The most common method of joining steel elements composing a tank shell is welding. The literature describes tanks whose shell consists of rectangular metal sheets interconnected with welded joints arranged vertically and horizontally to form a tank wall made of rectangles as a chequerboard. Prior art also describes methods for structures strengthening, for example with the use of a double shell or by installing a ring around it.

US20080314908A1 shows a cylindrical tank for liquid storage at low temperature. The tank shell is made of metal sheets joined with vertical welds. The shell has a layered design, i.e. it consists of two layers of metal. A concrete core is placed between these layers, which provides insulation and adequate stiffness. -
Patent EP3063455B1 describes a tank for storing liquids (e.g. cryogenic fluids). The tank has a cylindrical shape and is made of metal, in particular of steel, stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, or an alloy of these metals. Its walls are made of double shell. Structural components of the shell are welded together vertically. Moreover, the tank has an internal reinforcement in the form of ribs. - Document

GB1080043A - (D1) Document
US2333792A describes a tank for storing liquids with a high vapour pressure. Its shell is cylindrical in shape and made of rectangular components welded along the vertical edge. The tank has a convex roof and bottom, reinforced with radially arranged beams. Optionally, for additional reinforcement, columns arranged cylindrically (on the internal side of the shell) extend between the upper and lower beams. - Despite many differences in the design of the tanks, there is no solution where a single-shell tank with vertical axis, whose capacity may reach 10,000 m3 or more, has a simple and, at the same time, resistant structure. Prior art describes tanks having complex, multi-element designs, for example a reinforcing framework, external rings around the shell, or a double shell.
- An additional problem related to the storage of liquid materials is that any leakage in the tank must be quickly detected. Unsealing generally occurs at the points of welding. It is extremely rare that sheets are broken outside their joints.
- The purpose of the invention is to develop a tank with a simple design that will additionally ensure quick leakage detection.
- The essence of the invention is a cylindrical tank consisting of a roof, shell and bottom, wherein the shell consists of rectangular appropriately dimensioned metal sheets which are interconnected with a joint that runs only vertically, and the joint has a tightly fixed profile running along it, which encloses the joint from outside.
- A nozzle is installed in the bottom part of the profile, with a detector that indicates any leakage.
- Preferably, a detector is installed at the bottom part of the profile, especially a liquid detector or a differential pressure detector.
- Preferably, the cross section of the profile has a trapezoidal shape.
- Preferably, the cross section of the profile has a semicircular shape.
- Preferably, the profile is tightly fixed with a joint.
- Preferably, the metal sheets are rounded along their short side.
- The advantage of the tank according to the invention is its simple design. In addition, the profiles tightly fixed along each joint in the shell prevent any spillage of liquid outside in case of unsealing. Additionally, as the detectors, especially liquid (e.g. moisture) detectors, are arranged at the bottom of each profile, any leakage will be detected immediately. Another advantage of the invention is that the profile is enclosed both at the top and at the bottom. This allows to eliminate any effects of weather conditions on the tank leakage control, as any signs of moistness will come from the inside of the tank. Therefore, the profile has two roles: it acts as an additional seal (another shell is not required) and, together with the liquid detectors, enables continuous and immediate detection of any leakage.
- The preferable embodiment of the cylindrical tank with vertical axis according to the invention is presented in the figures of the drawing, where:
-
Fig. 1 illustrates the design scheme of the vertical-axis tank in a side view -
Fig. 2 shows the A-A section depicting the gap-closing profile - The following designations are used in the drawings: 1 ― roof, 2 ― shell, 3 ― bottom, 4 ― sheets composing the shell, 5 ― joint (weld), 6 ― profile.
- The tank shown in
Fig. 1 consists of a convex roof 1,shell 2 andbottom 3. The roof, shell and bottom are interconnected withjoint 5. In this embodiment, the shell consists of rectangular metal sheets which are interconnected with a joint, especially welded, vertically along the long edge. - In another embodiment, depending on the tank dimensions, the shell components may be rectangular metal sheets rounded along the short side.
-
Profile 6 is fixed with a weld along each vertical weld. In this embodiment, as shown inFig. 2 , the cross section of the fixed profile has a trapezoidal shape. In another embodiment, the profile may be rounded. It is important that the profile be fixed tightly, i.e. sealed at the top, at the bottom and along both long edges. With the sealing, any liquid (e.g. moisture) inside the profile, indicated by an appropriate detector installed there, should be interpreted as a leakage in the corresponding weld (not as, for example, the effect of weather conditions such as rain or snow). - Each profile is enclosed both at the top, at the level of upper capacity of the tank, and at the bottom. A liquid detector, e.g. moisture detector, is installed at the bottom of the profile.
- The tank according to the invention is used for liquid storage. Its simple design allows for the storage of 100 m3 to 100,000 m3 of liquid or even more. Owing to the quick leakage detection system, the tank may be used for storing flammable liquids, especially fuel.
