Description
- This invention relates to packaging, and in particular to box-type packaging with improved child resistance to opening.
- It is desirable for packaging for articles that could be considered dangerous to children if they gain free or unsupervised access to the articles to be designed in such a way that the packaging is made very difficult for a child to open while allowing an adult easy access to the articles. It is furthermore desirable to provide such child resistant packaging in a manner that is also relatively simple and cheap to manufacture and assemble.
- According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided packaging comprising a sleeve having an open end, a tray slideably received within the sleeve between a closed position, wherein an article located in the tray is enclosed within the sleeve, a front wall of the tray closing said open end of the sleeve, and an open position, wherein the tray extends from the open end of the sleeve to provide access to said article, a selectively releasable latch being provided acting between the tray and the sleeve, said latch preventing the withdrawal of the tray from its closed position within the sleeve when in a latched configuration, a tab or aperture being provided on an outer panel of the sleeve, said tab or aperture being adapted to permit manipulation of the latch to an unlatched configuration to allow the tray to be slid to its open position.
- In order to open the packaging it is necessary to pull on the front wall of the tray while at the same time acting on the tab or aperture in the outer panel of the sleeve to manipulate the latch to its unlatched configuration, thereby allowing the tray to be slid out of the sleeve to its open position. This operation will be difficult for a child but easy for an adult who understands the sequence of actions necessary to open the packaging.
- Preferably said latch comprises a first locking element defined by a first sub-panel of the tray and a second locking element defined by a first sub-panel of the sleeve, said first and second locking elements comprising opposing interfering locking edges which engage one another to prevent withdrawal of the tray from its closed position within the sleeve when the latch is in its latched configuration and which locking edges are disengaged from one another to allow the tray to slide out of the sleeve towards its open position when the latch is in its unlatched configuration. Preferably inward pressure can be applied to said first locking element via said tab or aperture provided on said outer panel of the sleeve to disengage said interfering locking edges from one another to release the latch to its unlatched configuration and allow the tray to be slid to its open position.
- In one embodiment the first sub-panel of the tray defining said first locking element comprises a first locking flap defined in a bottom panel of the tray, said first locking flap being defined by at least one cut line terminating at either end of a fold line, said fold line extending substantially parallel to the front wall of the tray, said first locking flap being folded about said fold line to overly a lower face of the bottom panel of the tray and extend towards said front wall of the tray. The first sub-panel of the sleeve defining said second locking element may comprise a second locking flap hingedly attached to a bottom panel of the sleeve at the open end of the sleeve and extending into the sleeve from said open end of the sleeve, such that said second locking flap defines a double thickness portion of the sleeve. The outer panel of the sleeve within which the tab or aperture may be provided comprising the bottom panel of the sleeve, said tab or aperture being arranged to be substantially aligned with said first locking flap when the tray is in its closed position within the sleeve such that a user can push upwardly on said first locking flap, via said tab or aperture, to disengage said interfering locking edges of the first and second locking elements from one another, such that the latch is in its unlatched configuration to allow the tray to be slid to its open position. Alternatively the first sub-panel of the tray defining said first locking element may comprise a first locking flap defined in a side panel of the tray, said first locking flap being defined by at least one cut line terminating at either end of a fold line, said fold line extending substantially parallel to the front wall of the tray, said first locking flap being folded about said fold line to overly an outer face of the side panel of the tray and extend towards said front wall of the tray, the first sub-panel of the sleeve defining said second locking element comprising a second locking flap hingedly attached to a side panel of the sleeve at the open end of the sleeve and extending into the sleeve from said open end of the sleeve, such that said second locking flap defines a double thickness portion of the sleeve, said tab or aperture being arranged in said side panel of the sleeve to be substantially aligned with said first locking flap when the tray is in its closed position within the sleeve such that a user can push inwardly on said first locking flap, via said tab or aperture, to disengage said interfering locking edges of the first and second locking elements from one another.
- The first locking flap may comprise a trapezoidal, more preferably quadrilateral shaped panel, the at least one cut line defining three sides of said first locking flap and said fold line defining a fourth side thereof. Further cut and/or fold lines may be formed in the bottom panel of the tray to define a recess into which the locking edge of said first locking flap may pass to allow disengagement of said interfering locking edges of the first and second locking elements from one another. The recess may be defined by a further flap defined in the bottom panel of the tray hingedly coupled to the remainder of the bottom panel via a fold line extending parallel to the fold line of the first locking flap.
- The tray may further comprise a base panel overlying the bottom panel and upon which articles to be held in the tray may be placed.
- Preferably the cut out portion of the bottom panel has a width less than the width of the tray.
- The front wall of the tray may incorporate a tab, aperture or other formation which may serve as a handle to facilitate opening, whereby the tab can pulled to slide the tray out of the sleeve towards its open position at the same time as the latch is manipulated to its unlatched configuration.
- Preferably the packaging is made from paperboard, cardboard or other foldable sheet material. The sleeve and the tray may be formed from respective one piece blanks of paperboard, cardboard or other foldable sheet material.
- According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a first one piece blank for forming the sleeve of the packaging of the first aspect of the invention, said first one piece blank comprising:
