Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for determining the duration of a cleaning cycle of a method for thermally cleaning a cooking chamber in a cooking appliance, in which sensor signals from an optical sensor are fed to an evaluation electronics which determines the degree of contamination of the cooking chamber based on the sensor signals by evaluating the sensor signals.
- the publication EP 0 529 352 A1 discloses a cooking appliance with a thermal self-cleaning function.
- the cooking appliance has a gas sensor in an exhaust air path of the muffle, the sensor signals of which are analyzed by an evaluation unit. After a typical pyrolysis operating time, statements are made about the necessary pyrolysis duration, among other things.
- Shading effects caused by sheets or grates in the cooking chamber are not detected and are not taken into account.
- the respective measurement is limited to the window size to the optical sensor and is inaccurate. It is not possible to detect the type of contamination.
- the reference value must also have been saved beforehand, although it remains unclear what should serve as a reference value in the first place.
- the heating output during a pyrolysis process in a household appliance in which the resulting smoke gases are converted by a catalyst, can be regulated depending on the temperature of the catalyst.
- the heating output is reduced if the difference between the temperatures of the catalyst and the heating chamber changes, with the difference being compared with a threshold value.
- the temperature measurement in the catalyst is unsuitable as a control variable for controlling a pyrolysis process because it does not allow a visual assessment of the cleanliness of the cooking appliance and the cleaning result. If only a small amount of smoke is produced, the temperature values are of little significance.
- the methods specified in the state of the art are unsuitable for determining the duration of a cleaning cycle with the required accuracy. Since the duration of the cleaning cycle influences the cleaning result, the duration of the cleaning cycle should be adapted to the time required for adequate cleaning. If the cleaning cycle is too short, the cooking chamber is not yet sufficiently clean; if it is too long, energy and resources are wasted unnecessarily. However, it would be desirable to be able to determine the duration of a cleaning cycle as precisely as possible in order to use only as many energy resources as are necessary for a cleaning cycle to achieve the desired cleaning result. In addition, a cleaning cycle can be planned better if it is known in advance when the cooking appliance will be available for normal operation again.
- the problem is solved for a generic method by using a camera as an optical sensor, which generates several camera images as sensor signals during the course of a cleaning cycle, the camera images are transmitted from the camera to the evaluation electronics, and the evaluation electronics evaluate the transmitted camera images with image processing software by determining a degree of contamination of the cooking chamber for each camera image and deriving a current value for the remaining duration of the cleaning cycle from the last determined value for a degree of contamination.
- Contamination in a cooking chamber is usually caused by greasy splashes or drops in the form of liquid that spontaneously emerge from a food item.
- the stains are then usually roughly distributed on the surface of a carrier material in the cooking chamber and are semi-transparent and dark yellow in color. They are not only found on the surfaces of the side, rear walls, base and ceiling panels of the cooking appliance that face into the cooking chamber, as well as the inside of the door to the cooking chamber, but usually also on the cover panel or the lens of the camera as spots and clouding, which are also visible in the respective camera image.
- the spots described usually show a blurred contour of a spot in the camera image, with the spot becoming lighter from the inside to the outside. This effect is caused by droplets forming on the surface of the carrier material to which the droplet in question adheres in the cooking chamber. As part of software-supported image processing, the spots can be recognized as more or less blurred shadows.
- All of the dirt described above can be detected and evaluated using image processing software when evaluating one or more camera images. It makes no fundamental difference whether the dirt is only on the camera cover and/or on the surfaces of the side and rear walls, base and ceiling panels of the cooking appliance and the inside of the door to the cooking chamber. Different focal planes of the camera can be used to identify the different spots can be easily recognized, differentiated and evaluated accordingly because they appear with different contrasts in a camera image.
- the current value for the remaining duration of the cleaning cycle can consist of a time value in seconds or minutes, but also of a simple on or off signal with which the cleaning device, for example the heater for pyrolytic cleaning, is switched on or off.
- a forecast of the expected remaining duration of a cleaning cycle can be made on the basis of a single and first camera image, which can also be created and evaluated before the start of a cleaning cycle.
- This time forecast created on the basis of the evaluation of just one camera image can, for example, be used to make a decision as to whether a pyrolysis program should be started now or at a later time.
- a forecast of an approximate time value can be sufficient to assess whether the downtime of the cooking appliance for conventional cooking processes over the predicted duration of the pyrolysis program is too long or tolerated and can therefore be triggered by an operator.
- a single camera image can also be sufficient to indicate how urgent it is to clean the cooking chamber using a cleaning cycle. With the single camera image, it is already possible to assess the degree of contamination of the cooking chamber and to derive a recommendation from this to initiate appropriate cleaning. If cleaning is not yet necessary, a corresponding recommendation is not made and unnecessary pyrolysis cycles are thus avoided.
- At least two camera images are created during a cleaning cycle, with the first camera image being created shortly before the start of the cleaning cycle in order to obtain an initial forecast for the duration of the cleaning cycle that has begun, and a second camera image being created at a later point in time, which is then used to assess whether and for how long the cleaning cycle should be continued.
- More than two camera images can also be created and evaluated during a cleaning cycle, for example at specific times and/or based on an event, such as when certain temperatures are reached in the cooking chamber, in order to decide whether or not the cooking chamber should be heated up to a higher temperature level.
- the accuracy in the assessment of the degree of contamination of the cooking chamber naturally increases when several camera images are included in the assessment.
- camera images can be created at least at the beginning and at the end of use of the cooking chamber, which are then evaluated by the evaluation electronics to assess the degree of contamination of the cooking chamber.
- Even more precise assessments and time forecasts can be created if additional camera images are created during an ongoing cleaning cycle and included in the evaluation.
- continuous monitoring of a cleaning cycle using several camera images and their comparison using the evaluation electronics can be used to identify the cleaning progress already achieved and to use this to control the course of the cleaning cycle and determine its duration.
- the stain will appear darker at the start of pyrolysis than a comparatively thinner splash.
- the described stains change in size and color in that they first become darker and smaller and then mostly disappear.
- These changes can be taken into account in an updated assessment of the degree of soiling of the cooking chamber and the remaining duration of a pyrolysis process. This is especially true if the time interval between compared camera images is included in the assessment. If certain discolorations and changes in the size and shape of the stains have occurred in a certain time interval, conclusions can be drawn from this as to how long it will take until the stains have completely disappeared. This is especially true for an analysis in which the corresponding changes from several time intervals are compared with each other and processed into a temporal forecast for the remaining duration.
- a camera aimed at the cooking chamber and connected to electronics is now often installed in higher-quality cooking appliances in order to be able to cover smart home functions. Using the existing camera for the additional function therefore hardly results in any additional costs for the user. It is sufficient to integrate the evaluation electronics appropriately into the existing electronics of the cooking appliance.
- the method according to the invention makes it possible to adapt the duration of the cleaning cycle to the amount of time required for adequate cleaning.
- a cleaning cycle lasts exactly as long as is required to achieve a satisfactory cleaning result, without wasting energy or other resources.
- the determination of the temperature prevailing in the cooking chamber can be included in determining the remaining duration of the cleaning cycle.
- the cooking appliance is available again as quickly as possible after a cleaning cycle. Planning when a cleaning cycle should be carried out is also simplified by the prognosis according to the method. By evaluating the camera images using the evaluation electronics, unnecessary cleaning cycles can also be avoided entirely.
- the degree of soiling of the cooking chamber is determined by counting the number, size and position of the spots and by evaluating the brightness of the camera image at a fixed exposure time.
- a current value for the duration of the cleaning cycle can then be derived from reference tables that the evaluation electronics access when evaluating the transmitted camera images with the image processing software.
- the degree of contamination of the cooking chamber is determined by comparing the current camera image with stored camera images.
- the stored camera images can be stored in the evaluation electronics, but they can also be accessed remotely via an Internet connection, or the current camera image is evaluated by an evaluation electronics that is arranged remotely as an expert system on an Internet server, so that current camera images and data determined from them are exchanged between the cooking appliance and the evaluation electronics for the duration of the cleaning cycle.
- the evaluation electronics checks the lighting of the cooking chamber and/or switches it on when the camera creates a camera image.
- the image quality of the camera image to be created is increased.
- the quality of the forecast regarding the necessity and duration of a cleaning cycle is thereby increased.
- the evaluation electronics evaluate a camera image to determine whether the cooking chamber has been emptied for a cleaning cycle. If the evaluation electronics detect that there is material in the cooking chamber at the start of a cleaning cycle that should be removed because it cannot withstand the temperatures that occur during pyrolytic cleaning and could possibly even catch fire, the evaluation electronics can send a warning signal to the device electronics that blocks the start of a cleaning cycle. The "empty" status The evaluation electronics can determine the cooking chamber's occupancy, for example, by comparing a current camera image with a camera image that would result if the cooking chamber were actually empty.
- the evaluation electronics generate a switch-off signal to switch off a cleaning cycle and/or a signal to reduce the temperature in the cooking chamber to the device electronics if it has detected a sufficiently clean cooking chamber as part of the image evaluation.
- the switch-off signal to the device electronics of the cooking device ensures that the cleaning cycle is not inadvertently continued beyond the extent recognized as necessary.
- the signal to reduce the temperature in the cooking chamber can also be used to avoid excessively high temperatures in the cooking chamber that are not or no longer necessary to achieve an adequate cleaning result, and the resulting waste of energy.
- FIG. 1 An embodiment of the invention is shown purely schematically in the drawing and is described in more detail below.
- the single figure shows an embodiment of a cooking appliance according to the invention with a camera.
- the single figure shows an example of a cooking appliance 30 according to the invention.
- the cooking appliance 30 is designed as an oven and has a housing 2 in which a cooking chamber 6 delimited by a housing wall 4 is arranged.
- the oven also has a 2D camera 8 designed as a fixed focus camera as an optical sensor, with an opening 4.1 for the camera 8 being formed in the housing wall 4 and covered by a lens 10 designed as a converging lens made of borosilicate glass.
- a cooking chamber lighting 11 designed as a baking chamber light is installed on a cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 of the housing 4.
- the baking chamber light 11 is also designed as a camera lighting 11. Accordingly, the fixed focus camera 8 can be constructed more simply in the present embodiment.
- the cooking chamber lighting 11 can also be arranged on a side wall or consist of a combination of ceiling and side lighting.
- the camera 8 is designed to create interior images of the cooking chamber 6 and is arranged accordingly on the housing 2. Since the cooking chamber 6 is relatively wide and flat, a lens 8.1 of the camera 8 has a correspondingly large object-side opening angle.
- the camera can also be designed as a plenoptic camera, TOF camera or stereo camera, i.e. in 3D technology. Cameras designed as thermal imaging cameras are also conceivable. In addition to single images, it is also possible to record image sequences and moving images.
- the opening 4.1 is essentially sealed gas-tight by the collecting lens 10 and a seal 12 arranged between the collecting lens 10 and the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 of the housing wall 4 and designed as a glass silk seal.
- a metal seal with or without a graphite coating can be used. Accordingly, the vapors generated during a cooking process in the cooking chamber 6 of a food 16 placed on a food support 14 cannot escape in an undesirable manner through the opening 4.1.
- the camera 8 can also be arranged in a lateral position or in any other position relative to the cooking chamber 6, so that it can also take useful photos of the cooking chamber 6 and the dirt present therein for evaluation purposes from these positions.
- the borosilicate glass collecting lens 10 and the glass silk seal 12 protect the camera 8 from substances contained in the vapors and from the high temperatures generated during the cooking process. This is particularly important because the cooking device 30 is designed as a self-cleaning cooking device 30, i.e. with a pyrolysis function. In pyrolysis mode, even higher temperatures are generated.
- the cooking chamber 6 is thermally insulated from the environment in a manner known to those skilled in the art by an essentially circumferential insulation layer 18.
- the insulation layer 18 is only partially shown in the figure.
- the opening 4.1 in the cooking chamber wall 4 is arranged here in the center of the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 of the housing wall 4.
- the opening 4.1 is kept as small as possible in order to have to break through the insulation layer 18 as little as possible at this point.
- the opening 4.1 is shown significantly enlarged in the figure for the sake of clarity.
- the camera 8 is arranged further away from the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 and thus from the cooking chamber 6 in a cooler area of the housing 2.
- the opening 4.1 can be made so small because a converging lens 10 is used here.
- the converging lens 10 widens the beam path of the light, symbolized in the figure by dashed lines 19, through the opening 4.1. This makes it possible, despite the small opening 4.1, to completely depict the cooking chamber 6 in the essential areas on the images taken with the camera 8, despite a reduced object-side opening angle of the lens 8.1 of the camera 8.
- the angle of view in the plane of the page shown in the figure can thus be increased from approximately 50° to approximately 110°.
- the aforementioned angle information cannot be taken from the schematic representation.
- the opening 4.1 can be arranged in the area of a top heat radiator 20 in the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 without the opening 4.1 and the top heat radiator 20 having a negative influence on each other.
- the top heat radiator 20 does not appear on the images taken with the camera 8.
- the cooking chamber lighting 11 is also arranged on the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 of the cooking chamber wall 4 in such a way that there is no undesirable interaction between the cooking chamber lighting 11 and the top heat radiator 20.
- the camera 8 and the converging lens 10 are additionally arranged in a cooling channel 2.1 of the housing 2.
- the camera 8 and the converging lens 10 are in heat transfer connection with the cooling air guided in the cooling channel 2.1.
- the cooling channel 2.1 is designed here as an air duct 2.1 of the cooking appliance.
- the air duct 2.1 is connected to the housing wall 4 in a flow-conducting manner by means of a flange 22 which is also chemical- and temperature-resistant, and the air duct 2.1 is essentially gas-tightly sealed against the environment.
- the air duct 2.1 of the cooking appliance 30 serves to extract the vapors generated during cooking processes in the cooking chamber 6 from the cooking chamber 6 and to discharge them into the open air.
- the vapor-air mixture is guided in the air duct 2.1 formed in the housing 2.
- the cooking appliance is also cooled in this way.
- the cooking appliance 30 according to the invention according to the present embodiment can be realized with fewer components and thus more cost-effectively.
- the individual components of the cooking appliance 30 according to the invention are partially shown at a distance from one another in the figure; see, for example, the distance between the insulation layer 18 and the cooking chamber ceiling 4.2 of the housing wall 4. This is merely for the sake of clarity.
- the components of the cooking appliance 30 according to the invention are connected to one another in a manner known to those skilled in the art, unless explicitly stated otherwise in the exemplary embodiment.
- the camera 8 can also be designed as a plenoptic camera, TOF camera or stereo camera, i.e. in 3D technology. Cameras designed as thermal imaging cameras are conceivable. In addition to single images, it is also possible to record sequences of images and moving images.
- a camera image 32 recorded by the camera 8 is transmitted to the evaluation electronics 40.
- the cooking appliance 30 is connected to the evaluation electronics 40, to which the camera images 32 taken by the camera 8 are transmitted for the purpose of determining the duration 46 of a cleaning cycle.
- the image processing software 42 is programmed in such a way that it can determine the degree of soiling 44 of the cooking chamber 6 based on the optical representation of the interior of the cooking appliance 30 resulting from the camera image 32.
- the evaluation electronics 40 determines the remaining duration 46 for which the cleaning cycle will continue.
- the determined value for the duration 46 of the cleaning cycle can be transmitted to the evaluation electronics 40 and/or the temperature control of the cooking appliance 30.
- the invention is not limited to the present embodiment.
- teaching according to the invention can also be used advantageously in other cooking devices.
