Description

    Field of the invention
  • The present invention relates to an adapter device for adapting a civil electrical plug to an industrial socket.
  • Description of the prior art
  • In industrial environments, such as, for example, construction sites, industrial plants, etc., electrical sockets are normally industrial sockets, for example, compliant with the European standard IEC 309.
  • Portable electrical appliances, on the other hand, are usually equipped with civil electrical plugs, configured for being plugged into civil electrical sockets installed in domestic environments. For example, portable electrical appliances are often equipped with civil electrical plugs of the type called "schuko", conforming to the European standard CEE 7/7.
  • When it is necessary to use electrical appliances equipped with civil plugs in environments equipped with industrial sockets, it is necessary to use special adapters.
  • In the state-of-the-art, various solutions of adapters for connecting civil electrical plugs to industrial sockets are known and widely used. Examples of these adapters are described in documents US 6 454 576 , US 6 234 823 , DE102004033636 and MI2013U000315.
  • The document MI2013U000315 describes an adapter device for adapting civil electrical plugs to industrial sockets, comprising a connector body provided frontally with a plurality of pins configured for being plugged into an industrial electrical socket and posteriorly with a plurality of connectors suitable for receiving corresponding pins of a civilian electric plug. The adapter device comprises a protective shell coupled to the back of the connector body. The protective shell develops in a longitudinal direction behind the connector body for a length such as to completely cover the connectors and the civil electric plug when it is inserted into the connector body. The protective shell is formed by two complementary half-shells fastened together by screws.
  • In this known solution, in order to connect a domestic plug to the adapter, it is necessary to remove the screws that fasten together the half-shells forming the protective casing, and tighten the fastening screws again after connecting the civil plug to the connector body of the adapter device. The fastening screws between the two half-shells must also be removed to remove the civil plug from the adapter device. A drawback of this solution is that the use of a tool (a screwdriver) is necessary for the assembly and disassembly of a plug. Another drawback is the risk of losing the fastening screws of the half-shells, which would render the adapter device unusable. Document US6234823 discloses another adapter device, which has the features of the preamble of claim 1.
  • Object and summary of the invention
  • The present invention aims to provide an improved adapter device that overcomes the problems of the prior art. Another object of the present invention is to provide an adapter device that allows the engagement and disengagement of a civil plug to be carried out more easily and quickly than the known adapter devices.
  • According to the present invention, these objects are achieved by an adapter device having the characteristics forming the subject of claim 1.
  • The claims form an integral part of the disclosure provided here in relation to the invention.
  • Brief description of the drawings
  • The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings, given purely by way of non-limiting example, wherein:
    • Figure 1 is a perspective view of an adapter device according to the present invention,
    • Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the adapter device of Figure 1,
    • Figure 3 is a perspective view from a different angle of the part indicated by the arrow III in Figure 2, and
    • Figures 4, 5 and 6 are perspective views illustrating the assembly sequence of the adapter device according to the invention.
    Detailed description
  • With reference to Figures 1 and 2, numeral 10 indicates an adapter device for adapting household electrical plugs to industrial sockets.
  • The adapter device 10 comprises a connector body 12 and a casing 14 fastened to the connector body 12 in the manner which will be described below.
  • With reference, in particular, to Figures 2 and 3, the connector body 12 is formed by a monolithic body of injection-molded plastic material in which a plug portion 16 and a socket portion 18 are defined. The plug portion 16 and the socket portion 18 of the connector body 12 are arranged on opposite sides of a plane perpendicular to a longitudinal axis A of the connector body 12.
  • The plug portion 16 is configured as the connection part of an industrial electric plug, and is equipped with male electrical connectors 20. The plug portion 16 of the connector body 12 is configured to plug into a standard industrial electrical socket. The plug portion 16 can, for example, be made in accordance with the European standard IEC 309. The connector body 12 may comprise a standard-type locking ring 22, configured for locking the plug portion 16 of the connector body 12 with a complementary socket. The locking ring 22 maybe axially constrained to the connector body 12, and can be rotatable about the longitudinal axis A of the connector body 12 between a locked position and an unlocked position, and vice versa.
  • With reference to Figure 3, the socket portion 18 of the connector body 12 comprises a plurality of female electrical contacts 24, electrically connected to corresponding male electrical contacts 20 of the plug portion 16. The socket portion 18 of the connector body 12 is shaped like a civil socket configured to engage with a standard civil plug 26. The socket portion 18 can, for example, be shaped as a multi-standard socket, for example, as a F+L type multi-standard socket that allows coupling with Italian L-type electrical plugs and with F-type plugs according to the EEC 7/7 standard (schuko).
  • The connector body 12 may have an annular groove 28 concentric to the longitudinal axis A formed on the outer surface of the socket portion 18, and a radial protrusion 30 projecting radially from the outer surface of the socket portion 18.
  • With reference - in particular - to Figures 2 and 4, the casing 14 of the adapter device 10 comprises two complementary shells 32 and a ring-shaped closing element 34 that fastens the shells 32 together. In a disassembled configuration of the adapter device 10, the two shells 32 and the closing element 34 are separated from each other and detached from the connector body 12. In the assembled configuration of the adapter device 10, the two shells 32 are fastened to the connector body 12, and the closing element 34 is fastened to the two shells 32.
  • In the assembled configuration of the adapter device 10, the two shells 32 are arranged on opposite sides of a plane passing through the longitudinal axis A. Each of the two shells 32 has a front section 36, a central section 38 and a rear section 40, aligned with each other along the longitudinal axis A. In the assembled configuration, the front sections 36 of the two shells 32 enclose the socket portion 18 of the connector body 12, the central sections 38 form a cavity into which the electric plug 26 is housed, engaged in the socket portion 18 of the connector body 12, and the rear sections 40 define a rear hole 42 through which an electric cable 44 connected to the civil plug 26 passes.
  • The front sections 36 of the shells 32 have respective semicircular ribs 46, which engage the annular groove 28 of the connector body 12. The front sections 36 of the shells 32 also have respective radial seats 48 inside which the radial projection 30 of the connector body 12 is inserted. The engagement between the ribs 46 of the shells 32 and the annular groove 28 of the connector body 12 constrains the shells 32 to the connector body 12 in an axial direction, while the engagement between the seats 48 of the shells 32 and the radial projection 30 of the connector body 12 constrains the shells 32 to the connector body 12 in a circumferential direction. Therefore, in the assembled position, the shells 32 are fastened with respect to the connector body 12.
  • The closing element 34 has the object of keeping the shells 32 in the closed position. The closing element 34 surrounds the central sections 38 of the shells 32. On the inner surface of the closing element 34, ribs 50 may be formed which, in the assembled position, are in contact with the outer surfaces of the central sections 38 of the shells 32. The closing element 34 comprises at least two elastically deformable teeth 52, which snap-engage respective seats 54 formed on the front sections 36 of the shells 32. In the embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the closing element 34 has two diametrically opposite teeth 52 which protrude from a front edge of the closing element 34.
  • The casing 14 may comprise a cable clamp 56 for fastening the cable 44 to one of the shells 42. The cable clamp 56, if present, may be a traditional screw cable clamp, as shown by way of example in the figures, or it can be a screwless cable clamp that holds the cable 44 by interference.
  • Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate the assembly sequence of the adapter device 10. In a first step, the civil plug 26 is passed through the closing element 34. In this regard, it can be noted that the inner diameter of the closing element 34 is greater than the maximum diameter of the civil plug 26 since the closing element 34 is intended to be positioned outside the sections 38 of the shells 32 that enclose the civil plug 26.
  • The plug 26 is, therefore, inserted into the socket portion 18 of the connector body. Then, the two shells 32 are positioned around the socket portion 18 of the connector body 12, with the ribs 46 of the shells 32 engaging the annular groove 28 of the connector body 12, and with the seats 48 of the shells 32 enclosing the radial protrusion 30 of the connector body 12. Subsequently, as illustrated in Figure 6, the closing element 34 is slid axially forward, until the elastic teeth 52 snap-engage the respective seats 54. In the engaged position, the central sections 38 of the shells 32 are enclosed within the closing element 34.
  • Figure 1 illustrates the assembled position of use of the adapter device 10. The disassembly of the adapter device 10 for removing the plug 26 is carried out by repeating the aforesaid operations in reverse order.
  • The adapter device 10 according to the present invention allows assembly and disassembly of the casing 14 without the need for tools. The assembly and disassembly operations are simple and fast and there are no risks of losing fastening elements such as screws or the like. The closing element 34 forms a circular band that surrounds the central part of the shells 32 and makes the casing 14 more rigid and stable.
  • Of course, without prejudice to the principle of the invention, the details of construction and the embodiments can be widely varied with respect to those described and illustrated, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims that follow.
