Description

  • This invention relates to a wall or ceiling panel with an upper surface, wherein said panel comprises a first end side provided with first connecting means and a second end side located opposite the first end side provided with second connecting means, which connecting means are suitable for connecting the end sides of adjacent panels to each other by engagement of the first connecting means with the second connecting means, wherein the first connecting means are formed by a projection connected to the upper surface that comprises at least two parts, a first downward-facing part that is connected to the upper surface and a second part with a free end.
  • In particular, this invention relates to an end connection system for a wall or ceiling panel. Most wall and ceiling panels have four sides. When these sides are configured with connecting means, they are referred to as long and end connections, wherein the long connection is the connection on the long sides and the end connection is the connection on the short sides of the panels. The present invention thus relates to such an end connection system for hollow wall and ceiling panels or solid wall and ceiling panels.
  • The wall or ceiling panels according to the present invention are ordinarily produced from a suitable polymer, preferably PVC, by means of a production method suitable for this purpose. The most common production method is extrusion, wherein the panels are produced in a quasi-continuous manner in long lengths and are then sawn to length.
  • At their end sides (ends), panels produced by extrusion tend to be round (convex) on the upper side and hollow (concave) on the underside. This results from the stresses released during cooling of the panels (profiles) and the subsequent sawing of the panels to length.
  • Such a panel is described in the European patent publications EP 1931842 and EP 1762669 . As the panels, specifically at the end sides, are not properly flat, the result is that when they are connected to each other via their end sides, an opening of a few mm is left between them in the middle of the end side. In EP 1762669 , this problem is solved in that, as shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 (g) and (h) of said publication, the panels are configured to interlock horizontally, which causes the opening formed to be pulled tight, so to speak, when the panels are pushed towards each another. The horizontal interlocking is achieved in that when the panels are connected, the second part of the first connecting means with the free end is moved into a groove that is provided in the end surface of an adjacent panel.
  • However, the drawback of the panels described in EP 1931842 and EP 1762669 is that they have to be pushed towards each other in order to connect them. Because of this, these panels cannot be glued onto a substrate.
  • The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a wall or ceiling panel, wherein it is not necessary to push the panels towards each other in order to connect them, so that they can also be glued onto a substrate, and wherein horizontal interlocking can also be achieved when two adjacent panels are connected to each other via their end sides so that a good flat connection is achieved, but without forming an opening as a result of the concave/convex design of the end sides.
  • The object of the invention is achieved by providing a wall or ceiling panel with an upper surface, wherein said panel comprises a first end side provided with first connecting means and a second end side located opposite the first end side provided with second connecting means, which connecting means are suitable for connecting the end sides of adjacent panels to each other by engagement of the first connecting means with the second connecting means, wherein the first connecting means are formed by a first projection connected to the upper surface that comprises at least two parts, a first downward-facing part that is connected to the upper surface and a second part with a free end, wherein the second part is connected to the first part and faces upward, wherein the second connecting means are formed by a second projection connected to the upper surface that comprises two parts, a first part that is connected to the upper surface and extends in the longitudinal direction of the upper surface and a second downward-facing part that is connected to the first part, wherein the second connecting means further comprise a recess that extends under the aforementioned first part connected to the upper surface and into which recess the second part of the first connecting means engages when two adjacent panels are in the connected position in order to bring about horizontal interlocking between two adjacent panels. This horizontal interlocking is intended to ensure that a good flat connection is achieved between the end sides (ends) of adjacent panels, but without there being a visible opening due to the concave/convex design. As the second part of the first connecting means comes to rest with its end in said recess at the time of connection, the panels are pulled straight, so to speak.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the wall or ceiling panel according to the invention, the first downward-facing part that is connected to the upper surface and the second part with a free end are flexible with respect to each other. When the panels are not connected, the second part is preferably positioned transversely to the first part. When two panels are connected to each other, the second part of the first connecting means is to engage in the recess of the second connecting means, and the second part is to shift (the angle becomes greater) relative to the first part. Because the angle between the two parts becomes greater, an interlocking force is generated that is strong enough to connect the panels to each other in a flat manner.
  • In a preferred embodiment, the aforementioned recess is delimited by a bevelled part that forms the connection between the second end side and the lower surface of the first part connected to the upper surface. This recess forms, so to speak, a receiving space for at least a part of the second part of the first connecting means.
  • The wall or ceiling panels according to the invention preferably have a thickness of 2 mm to 15 mm, and more particularly a thickness of 4 mm to 10 mm. In particular, the connecting means have sufficient flexibility, and the base material from which the panels are formed is preferably a polymer for this purpose. The most common polymer for the wall or ceiling panels in question is PVC.
  • Other preferred embodiments of the wall or ceiling panel according to the invention are described in the dependent claims.
  • The invention is explained in further detail in the attached drawings, which show the following:
    • Figs. 1 to 4 : a schematic view of the wall or ceiling panels according to the invention and the manner in which two such panels are attached to each other.
  • This invention relates to a wall or ceiling panel (1, 1'), and as can be seen from the attached figures, it has an upper surface (6, 6') that may or may not be provided with a decorative layer. The panel (1, 1') has a first end side (2) provided with first connecting means (4) and a second end side (3) located opposite the first end side (2) provided with second connecting means (5), which connecting means (4, 5) are suitable for connecting the end sides of adjacent panels (1, 1') to each other by engagement of the first connecting means (4) with the second connecting means (5). Two such panels (1 and 1') are connected to each other by executing (carrying out) a tilting movement. When the panels (1, 1') according to the invention are in place, they no longer need to be pushed towards each other, which also allows said panels to be glued to a substrate.
  • The first connecting means (4) are formed by a first projection (7) connected to the upper surface (6) that comprises at least two parts (8, 9), a first downward-facing part (8) that is connected to the upper surface (6) and a second part (9) with a free end. The second part (9) is connected to the first part (8) and faces upward. In the unconnected position, the angle (α1) between the first (8) and the second part (9) should be approximately 90°. In the embodiment shown, connection to the upper surface takes place via a third part (14) that extends in the longitudinal direction of the upper surface (6).
  • The second connecting means (5) are formed by a second projection (10) connected to the upper surface (6') that comprises two parts (11, 12), a first part (11) that is connected to the upper surface (6') and extends in the longitudinal direction of the upper surface (6') and a second downward-facing part (12) that is connected to the first part (11).
  • The second connecting means (5) further comprise a recess (13), wherein the second part (9) of the first connecting means (4) engages when two adjacent panels (1, 1') are in the connected position in order to bring about horizontal interlocking between said two adjacent panels. This recess (13) can be seen as an interlocking groove that is delimited by a bevelled part (15) that forms the connection between the second end side (3) and the upper surface (6'). The bevelled part (15) is in contact with the lower surface (underside) of the first part (11) connected to the upper surface (6'), preferably at the point where the first part (11) is connected to the upper surface (6'). In the connected position, the free end of the second part (9) of the first connecting means (4) is in contact with the underside (lower surface) of the first part (11) of the second connecting means (5).
  • This horizontal interlocking is intended to ensure that a good flat connection is achieved between the end sides of adjacent panels, without there being a visible opening as a result of the concave/convex design. As the second part of the first connecting means engages in the recess (13) when this connection occurs, the panels are pulled straight, so to speak. As can be seen from Fig. 4, in the connected position, the end of the second part (9) fits into the angle of the recess (13). In the connected position, the angle (α2) between the first (8) and the second part (9) should be greater than 90°, preferably between 91° and 97°, and more particularly 95°. This angular movement is intended to ensure that an (interlocking) force is generated that pulls the panels straight.
  • In the connected position, the end of the second downward-facing part (12) of the second connecting means is also to fit into the angle (α2) formed between the first (8) and the second part (9) of the first connecting means. In this manner, a V-groove connection can be produced on the end edge that is visually identical to that on the long connection side.
  • In a preferred embodiment, in the first projection (7), the second part (9) with the free end is longer than the first downward-facing part (8). At the same time, the second part (9) of the first projection (7) with the free end is also longer than the second downward-facing part (12) that is connected to the first part (11) of the second projection (10).
  • Moreover, there is a maximum 10% difference in length between the first downward-facing part (8) of the first projection (7) and the second downward-facing part (12) of the second projection (10). Preferably, the difference in length is between 0% and 10%, and more particularly between 0% and 5%.
