Definitions
- the invention consists of a special device that ensures the correct, safe application of a drug contained in a pre-filled hypodermic syringe without risk to health.
- Medicinal products and medications can be delivered into the human body via several methods.
- Parenteral delivery is applied in cases where drugs are not absorbed via the intestine or mucous membrane or if it may be destroyed in the stomach or intestine.
- This gives rise to subcutaneous delivery of drugs, application of medicinal substances via injection, infusion or implanting into the subdermal tissue, allowing the application of a range of substances of predominantly protein basis.
- the injection of drugs often relies on the syringe as a simple medicinal tool that consists of a piston that tightly closes a (usually plastic or glass) container containing a chamber, the end of which leads into a normalized cone where an injection needle or tube may be inserted.
- the syringe is predominantly used directly by doctors or other medical staff, and only rarely by patients themselves since its use requires a certain amount of caution, care and especially knowledge regarding the location, depth and intensity of the injection and the speed of applying the given drug.
- diabetic syringes which unlike standard medical syringes do not have a thumb rest since they are expected to be used directly by the patient, i.e., the syringe is expected to be turned inwards, unlike in the case of standard medical syringes that are designed to be used on other persons - patients.
- Diabetic syringes only have a small volume (about 5 ccm) and instead of a pressure area the end of the device is usually thin and rough in order to make it easier to move the piston in both directions, even with just a single hand.
- syringes do not have the option of inserting a needle into them, but rather come with a pre-installed needle directly from production. In any case, they must be applied manually, and even though these so-called diabetic syringes are designed for self-application they do not completely remove the complications associated with selecting a suitable place, depth, and intensity of injection and the speed of application of the drug.
- the body of the device has fixtures in its upper part with a scale and cogs, while its lower part has a flat surface.
- the body contains a central canal, leading from the top to the bottom, used by the syringe contained inside; the canal is extended in its lower part.
- the flat surface and body are equipped with a canal for the removal of air.
- the body has a round component on its side, and is open on the back along a cut to facilitate the insertion of a syringe.
- Device for the application of injections as per this invention has several advantages compared to the current state of the art.
- One fundamental advantage is the fact that compared to automatic pens the patient has the possibility of applying the drug with a custom and optimal speed and thus to manage the speed of delivery of the drug into the body.
- the device also allows for a comfortable, quick and precise control and configuration of the depth of the injection. By hiding the syringe, it also reduces fear from the application of the drug, especially for emotionally more sensitive patient categories (such as children and seniors).
- the sufficiently large and stable lower surface of the device which comes in contact with the patient’s skin at the location of the injection and which features a canal for the ejection of air, ensures that the syringe is always injected into the patient’s body perpendicularly to the injection area and with sufficient area to support the injection.
- the body of the device is made of a single piece of material, is resistant to damage and avoids any complications with the setup of the device. This also guarantees simple operation of the device. Making the device from a single piece of rubber or silicon results in an applicator that is resistant and easy to clean or sterilize.
- Fig. 1 depicts the device from a frontal view
- Fig. 2 depicts it from behind and shows the central canal and its extension located inside the device
- Fig. 3 depicts the device from the side and shows its inside components
- Fig. 4 depicts the device from the front (similarly as Fig. 1) but also shows the inner parts
- Fig. 5 depicts the device from the top and from the bottom
- Fig. 6 depicts the placement of the syringe in the device.
- Device for the application of injections made of soft medical silicon consists of a body l, containing a central canal 3 leading from top to bottom used to hold a syringe.
- the central canal 3 used to hold the syringe is extended in its lower part, specifically leading to the extension 6 of the central canal 3.
- the central canal 3 begins on the top part of the body 1, where fixtures 2 are located along with a scale and cogs that hold the pins on the syringe, and then leads through the body l_ into the extension 6 of the central canal 3 located in a flat surface 5.
- the flat surface 5 and body J_ of the device contain canal 4 for the ejection of air, which together with the extension 6 of the central canal 3 secures the removal of air located between the body of the patient and the body 1 of the device, specifically between the body of the patient and the flat surface 5 on the body l .
- Device for the application of injections is used as follows. The patient opens the body l_ of the device, which is opened in its back side along the whole length of the central canal 3 and the extension 6 of the central canal 3, and inserts the pre-filled syringe containing the drug into the central canal 3.
- the small protrusions on the syringe that are usually used to get a better grip with one’s finders are placed between fixtures 2, equipped with a scale on the side and cogs in the inner part; here, the scale precisely specifies the depth of the syringe in the body J_ of the device, which in turn precisely regulates the length of the needle that comes out of the body 1 of the device, specifically out of the flat surface 5 of the body 1, and hence precisely regulates the depth of the injection.
- the patient removes the safety cap on the needle of the syringe and grips the body l_ of the device in the palm of his/her hand.
- the side 7 of the body l_ is round so as to provide a good ergonomic fit in the patient’s hand.
- the shape of the palm and the round shape of the side 7 allows for an even and safe fixing of the syringe in the central canal 3 along its whole length.
- the patient applies the medicine by injecting the needle into his/her body.
- the air caught between the patient’s body and the flat surface 5, which ensures the perpendicular positioning of the needle at the moment of injection, is removed via the air discharge canal 4.
- the extension 6 of the central canal 3 is used together with canal 4 to allow for the removal of air, and also facilitates the removal of the safety cap of the needle before the injection.
- the patient returns the safety cap on the needle and removes the syringe from the central canal 3 and the body 1 of the device. At this point the product is prepared for its next use.
- Device for the application of injections can be used in healthcare, notably for the injection of medications, both in case of self-application or application by a third party.
