Definitions
- the field of the invention is that of cowlings making it possible to cover a rear part of a gyrostabilized projectile and of projectiles fitted with such cowlings.
- caliber gyrostabilized projectiles (caliber from 40 mm to 155 mm) have a belt which is located on their body, in front of a rear part or base of the projectile. This belt is responsible for driving the projectile in rotation and ensuring gas pressure tightness between the projectile and the internal wall of a tube of a weapon which fires the projectile, in order to ensure propulsion. the most effective of the projectile by guaranteeing the absence of gas leaks.
- This type of projectile sometimes includes equipment located at the rear part (or base) such as for example fins or a parachute. This equipment is located behind the belt and is therefore exposed to the very high pressure of the firing gases, which risks damaging them.
- Such a cowling is imperfect because the firing gases can infiltrate radially into the cowling at the edge of the cowling and damage the equipment or cause premature separation between the base and the cowling.
- this cowling is made of a material which disintegrates during firing. However, it is essential that the destruction of the cowling does not occur too soon so that the protection of the equipment is ensured.
- the invention proposes to solve this problem by proposing a cowling which can at the same time ensure the protection of the equipment but whose ejection following the firing is ensured in a reliable and reproducible manner.
- the invention also solves a problem of maintaining the cowling in the axial position.
- the invention also solves a problem of protecting the base of the projectile against thermal and mechanical attack from grains of powder during firing.
- the invention therefore relates to a cowling intended to protect a base of a gyrostabilized projectile which comprises a sealing belt intended to correspond with the scratches of a weapon, the cowling comprising a bottom intended to be positioned at the rear of the projectile and a flank which extends from the bottom to a front edge intended to be positioned in the vicinity of the rear of the belt, cowling characterized in that it comprises an annular bulge or ferrule which is located at the level of the edge front of the cowling and which is dimensioned in such a way that it can be applied in a radially tight manner against the base of the projectile to prevent the penetration of gases into the cowling.
- the ferrule includes a collar carried by the inside of the front edge, a collar intended to cooperate with a groove of the projectile located just behind the belt to prevent the axial shrinkage of the cowling.
- the ferrule once placed on the base has an outside diameter equal to that of the belt.
- the ferrule has a shoulder oriented towards the rear of the projectile and intended to correspond with an installation tool.
- the cowling comprises at least two different materials.
- the ferrule may comprise an elastic polyamide material.
- the flank and the bottom may also comprise an elastic silicone material.
- the bottom of the cowling may include an anti-impact reinforcement.
- the invention also relates to a gyrostabilized projectile comprising a sealing belt intended to correspond with the scratches of a weapon and comprising a cowling according to one of the preceding characteristics.
- a gyrostabilized projectile 100 comprises a belt 200 of the type described for example in the patent FR2882430 where the belt is slipping.
- a non-slip belt may also be used.
- the base 101 of the projectile 100 houses pivoting fins 10, located in housings 21 of the base 101, and called to unfold towards the outside of the projectile 100 after the exit of the tube thanks to in ways not described.
- a cowling 1 covers the base 101.
- the cowling 1 comprises a bottom 2 located opposite a rear face AR of the base 101.
- a sidewall 3 surrounds the peripheral surface of the base 101 and it extends from the bottom 2 to an edge front 4 which is located in the vicinity of the rear of the belt 200.
- the bottom 2 and the side 3 of the cowling 1 thus cover the entire base 101.
- the cowling 1 also comprises an annular bulge 5, hereinafter referred to as shell 5, which forms the edge 4 of the cowling.
- This shroud 5 comprises an elastic material which is dimensioned in such a way that, when the cowling is in place, the shroud radially tightens the base sufficiently to prevent the penetration of gas into the cowling at the level of the front edge 4.
- shroud 5 a material comprising polyamide for its plastic characteristics and resistance to heat and pressure.
- the bottom 2 of the cowling 1 may include a reinforcement 6 comprising a metal sheet for example, reinforcement possibly extending in part on the sidewall 3.
- the cowling 1 comprises a flange 7 positioned on the inside of the front edge 4, flange 7 which is intended to correspond with a groove 102 of the projectile 100, groove which is located just behind the belt 200.
- the collar 7 thus locks the cowling 1 on the projectile 100 and prevents any withdrawal of the cowling 1 along the longitudinal axis X of the cowling 1.
- the outer diameter D of the ferrule 5 is substantially equal to the outer diameter D of the belt 200.
- a projectile 100 comprising a cowling 1 according to the invention is located in a tube 300 of a weapon which comprises helical stripes 301 intended to impart a rotational movement to the projectile to gyro-stabilize it.
- the coupling between the stripes 301 and the projectile takes place at the level of the belt 200 which comprises a ductile material which adopts the shape of the stripes 301 by deformation.
- the ferrule 5 having substantially the same outer diameter D as the belt 200 is also deformed by the scratches 301 of the weapon 300 which form crenellations over its entire circumference.
- this deformation induces additional pressure of the ferrule 5 on the front edge 4 of the cowling 1 which contributes to preventing the penetration of firing gas into the cowling 1, thus protecting the base 101 and its equipment 10.
- the zones of deformation of the shroud 5 by the scratches 301 constitute as many zones of accumulation of mechanical stresses which weaken the shroud 5, facilitating its ejection as we shall see later.
- the reinforcement 6 mentioned above acts as an anti-impact shield preventing the perforation of the cowling 1 by the 500 grains.
- the centrifugal force applied to the ferrule 5, due to the gyrostabilization and the effects of the aerodynamic flow, and the absence of support by the tube will cause the ferrule 5 to burst, which has been weakened by the passage in the tube, and the front edge 4 of the cowling which will cause a separation of the cowling 1 with respect to the base 101, favorable to the deployment of the fins.
- the cowling 1 may be made of a single block of a material comprising polyamide but may also be a part comprising several materials integral with each other, such as for example a ferrule 5 made of polyamide and integral with a cup made of silicone. formed by the sides 3 and the bottom 2.
- Silicone is particularly advantageous for its resistance to heat and pressure and has the advantage of breaking very easily during the phase of separation of the base 101 at the tube outlet.
- the manufacture of the cowling 1 can thus be easily carried out by bi-material injection of the cup and the ferrule.
- the injection can be carried out in a mold incorporating the reinforcement 6 which will be imprisoned in the bucket.
- the reinforcement may be bonded to the bucket after manufacture.
- the reinforcement can be glued inside or outside the bucket.
- the cowling 1 has an internal diameter slightly smaller than the external diameter of the base 101 so that the ferrule 5, once in place, can be in voltage to sufficiently tighten the base 101 to prevent the penetration of gases.
- the ferrule 5 comprises a shoulder 8 oriented towards the rear AR which serves as a support face for a tool 12 which pushes the cowling 1, along the longitudinal axis X, and along the walls of the base 101 which are partly slightly conical which causes the progressive expansion of the ferrule 5, of the edge 4 and of the collar 7.
- the tool 12 has a substantially tubular shape and has its outer wall which includes slots 13 which facilitate its progressive deformation as the ferrule 4 and the shoulder 8 expand.

Description
The field of the invention is that of cowlings making it possible to cover a rear part of a gyrostabilized projectile and of projectiles fitted with such cowlings.
Large caliber gyrostabilized projectiles (caliber from 40 mm to 155 mm) have a belt which is located on their body, in front of a rear part or base of the projectile. This belt is responsible for driving the projectile in rotation and ensuring gas pressure tightness between the projectile and the internal wall of a tube of a weapon which fires the projectile, in order to ensure propulsion. the most effective of the projectile by guaranteeing the absence of gas leaks.
This type of projectile sometimes includes equipment located at the rear part (or base) such as for example fins or a parachute. This equipment is located behind the belt and is therefore exposed to the very high pressure of the firing gases, which risks damaging them.
Such a cowling is imperfect because the firing gases can infiltrate radially into the cowling at the edge of the cowling and damage the equipment or cause premature separation between the base and the cowling.
Furthermore, this cowling is made of a material which disintegrates during firing. However, it is essential that the destruction of the cowling does not occur too soon so that the protection of the equipment is ensured.
There is therefore a certain contradiction that the patent does not raise in wanting to provide protection with a cowling designed to be fragile.
The invention proposes to solve this problem by proposing a cowling which can at the same time ensure the protection of the equipment but whose ejection following the firing is ensured in a reliable and reproducible manner.
Advantageously, the invention also solves a problem of maintaining the cowling in the axial position.
Advantageously, the invention also solves a problem of protecting the base of the projectile against thermal and mechanical attack from grains of powder during firing.
The invention therefore relates to a cowling intended to protect a base of a gyrostabilized projectile which comprises a sealing belt intended to correspond with the scratches of a weapon, the cowling comprising a bottom intended to be positioned at the rear of the projectile and a flank which extends from the bottom to a front edge intended to be positioned in the vicinity of the rear of the belt, cowling characterized in that it comprises an annular bulge or ferrule which is located at the level of the edge front of the cowling and which is dimensioned in such a way that it can be applied in a radially tight manner against the base of the projectile to prevent the penetration of gases into the cowling.
Advantageously, the ferrule includes a collar carried by the inside of the front edge, a collar intended to cooperate with a groove of the projectile located just behind the belt to prevent the axial shrinkage of the cowling.
Advantageously, the ferrule once placed on the base has an outside diameter equal to that of the belt.
Advantageously, the ferrule has a shoulder oriented towards the rear of the projectile and intended to correspond with an installation tool.
Advantageously, the cowling comprises at least two different materials.
In particular, the ferrule may comprise an elastic polyamide material.
The flank and the bottom may also comprise an elastic silicone material.
According to a variant of the invention, the bottom of the cowling may include an anti-impact reinforcement.
The invention also relates to a gyrostabilized projectile comprising a sealing belt intended to correspond with the scratches of a weapon and comprising a cowling according to one of the preceding characteristics.

Behind this belt is the
A person skilled in the art will preferably choose to make the shroud 5 a material comprising polyamide for its plastic characteristics and resistance to heat and pressure.
It is noted that the bottom 2 of the

Conventionally, the coupling between the
The
The zones of deformation of the
At the exit of the
Silicone is particularly advantageous for its resistance to heat and pressure and has the advantage of breaking very easily during the phase of separation of the
The manufacture of the
Alternatively, the reinforcement may be bonded to the bucket after manufacture. The reinforcement can be glued inside or outside the bucket.

In order to put the
