Definitions
- the present invention relates to liquefied gas tank arrangements, particularly to arrangement for controlling pressure of a liquefied gas tank arrangement comprising a liquefied gas tank, wherein the gas in the tank forms a liquid phase section and a gaseous phase section in said tank.
- Invention relates also to a method of operating a liquefied gas tank ar- rangement.
- WO2005058684 A1 discloses a gas supply arrangement for a marine vessel being adapted to carry liquefied gas in its cargo tank having an ullage space section and a liquid phase section and to utilise the cargo as fuel to provide power for the vessel.
- the arrangement comprises a first gas supply line which connects an ullage space section of the cargo tank and a gas main supply line and which is provided with a compressor for raising the pressure of the gas to an adequate level, a second gas supply line which connects liquid phase section of the cargo tank and the gas main supply line and which is provided with at least a pump for raising the pressure of the liquid gas and for pumping it forward.
- the second gas supply line is provided with a gas reservoir having an ullage space section and liquid phase section, which reservoir is connected to the liquid phase section of the cargo tank by a first duct section of the second gas supply line and to the gas main supply line by a second duct section of the second gas supply line.
- EP 2032428 B1 discloses an example of a fuel system for gas operated internal combustion piston engine in a marine vessel, in which gas is stored in at least one fuel storage tank in the vessel as liquefied gas. The gas is stored in fuel storage tanks, in which prevails only the hydrostatic pressure caused by the liquid gas.
- the actual fuel feeding system comprises a separate fuel feed tank in which the gas is in liquid phase and at elevated pressure suitable for feeding to the engine.
- the fuel feed tank must be built to withhold the high pressure, typically at a magnitude of about 500 kPa.
- the gas driven gas consumers configured to combust gaseous fuel have practically always some demands in respect to the pressure of the gas introduced to the gas consumer. Therefore the feeding pressure needs to be controlled.
- liquefied gas is typically stored at extremely low temperature and due to e.g. heat transfer from surrounding a part of the gas is evaporated as so called boil off gas.
- WO2016163666 A1 discloses a fuel gas supply system.
- the fuel gas supply system comprises a storage tank for storing liquefied gas and boil-off gas of the liquefied gas.
- the tank pressure is only moderate and therefore there is a compression unit for compressing the boil-off gas supplied from the storage tank and a pump for pressurizing the liquefied gas supplied from the storage tank. This facilitates the usage of the boil of gas as a fuel and the maintenance of the pressure in the tank at desired level despite of formation of boil off gas.
- a liquefied gas tank arrangement comprises a liquefied gas tank, wherein the gas in the tank forms a liquid phase section and a gaseous phase section in said tank, a main supply line configured to feed gas to a gas consumer, an auxiliary vessel provided with a heating means configured to transfer heat into the auxiliary vessel, a first gas line, which connects the gaseous phase section of the tank and the auxiliary vessel, the first gas line comprising a first valve, a second gas line, which connects the auxiliary vessel and the main supply line, the second gas line comprising a second valve, and a third gas line, which connects the liquid phase section in the tank and the auxiliary vessel, the third gas line comprising a third valve.
- the arrangement it is possible decrease the pressure in the liquefied gas tank and feed the gas
- the main supply line fluidly connects the liquid phase section of the tank and the gas consumer, and which main supply line is provided with at least one pump for raising the pressure of the liquefied gas, and with at least one heat exchanger for evaporating the liquid gas into gaseous form for use in the gas consumer, and that the third gas line connects the auxiliary vessel to the liquid phase section in the tank via the main supply line and is connected to the main supply line at the location between said pump and said heat exchanger.
- the arrangement further comprises a computer control unit comprising executable instructions to successively: open the first valve and feed gaseous gas from the gaseous phase section of the liquefied gas tank into the auxiliary vessel; close the first valve and close the space in the auxiliary vessel; apply heat into the auxiliary vessel for increasing the pressure in the closed space of the auxiliary vessel, thus forming pressurized gas; lead said pressurized gas controllably into the main supply line by control- lably opening the second valve; close the second valve and the space in the auxiliary vessel: feed liquefied gas from the liquid phase section of the tank by opening the third valve for decreasing the pressure in the auxiliary vessel; close the third valve.

- steps a) to d) are repeated more than once.
- the pressure in the liquefied gas tank is monitored and the practising of the steps a) to d) is commenced in case the pressure is more than a set value of the pressure, and the steps a) to d) are repeated until the pressure is less than or equal to a set value of the pressure.
- Figure 1 illustrates a liquefied gas tank arrangement according to an embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 illustrates step of the method according to an embodiment of the invention
- Figure 3 illustrates a liquefied gas tank arrangement according to another embodiment of the invention.
- Figure 1 depicts schematically a liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 configured to store liquefied gas in cryogenic conditions in a tank 12 belonging to the arrangement 10.
- the tank 12 includes liquefied gas the gas forms a liquid phase section 12.1 and a gaseous phase section 12.2 in the tank 12.
- the gaseous phase section may also be referred to as an ullage section.
- the gaseous phase section 12.2 is at the upper part of the tank and the liquid phase section is at the lower part of the tank 12.
- the liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 comprises a main supply line 14 which extends from a lower part i.e. near a bottom of the tank 12 to one or more gas consumer(s) 16.
- the main supply line fluidly connects the liquid phase sec- tion 12.1 of the tank 12 and the gas consumer 16.
- the liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 is provided for storing and supplying fuel for the gas consumer by means of which it is run.
- the main supply line is provided with a pump 18 for raising the pressure of the liquefied gas to a level which makes it possible to provide gas for the gas consumer at suitable pressure level.
- a pump 18 for raising the pressure of the liquefied gas to a level which makes it possible to provide gas for the gas consumer at suitable pressure level.
- the gas consumer is an internal combustion piston engine configured to combust gaseous fuel.
- the gas feed pressure to the engine is approximately 500kPa.
- the main supply line 14 is provided with a heat exchanger 19 configured to evaporate the liquefied gas and optionally heat up the gaseous gas to a temperature suitable for use in the gas consumer 16.
- the heat exchanger 19 may be formed from one or more separate heat exchangers.
- the main supply line serves as a primary gas feeding system for the gas consumer 16.
- the liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 comprises an assembly 20 adapted for discharging gaseous gas from the tank 12, increase the pressure of the gas to an elevated pressure and feeding the gaseous gas at the elevated pressure to the main supply line 14.
- the assembly 20, and therefore also the liquefied gas tank arrangement 10, comprises an auxiliary vessel 22 provided with a heating means configured to transfer heat into the auxiliary vessel 24 for heating the contents of the auxiliary vessel 22.
- the heating means 24 may be for example a heat exchanger system 24 connected to the gas consumer 16 in such a manner that heat produced in the gas consumer is transferred to and utilized in the auxiliary vessel 22 for heating the gas therein.
- the heating means is provided with a control means 25, to control the operation of the heating means, i.e. the applied heat power.
- the heating means 24 is a heat exchanger in which a heat transfer fluid is flown and the control means 25 is a valve arranged for controlling flow of the fluid through the heat exchanger.
- the heating means also be realized by an electric heater, in which case the control means is for example a voltage control means.
- the heating means 24 may also be referred to as a heater independently of the used heat source.
- the auxiliary vessel is constructed as a pressure vessel withholding a pressure which is at least equal to the gas feed pressure of the gas consumer.
- the auxiliary vessel 22 is in flow communication with the gaseous space 12.2 of the tank 12. This makes is possible to feed or purge gas from liquefied gas tank 12 to the auxiliary vessel 22. Advanta- geously the purging is driven by the pressure difference created between the auxiliary vessel 22 and the tank 12.
- the gaseous space 12.2 thereof are connected with each other by mean of a first gas line 26 which opens to the upper part of the tank 12.
- the first gas line 26 comprises a first valve 28 by means of which the flow communication between the auxiliary vessel 22 and the tank 12 can be opened and closed.
- the liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 comprises also a second gas line 30, which connects the auxiliary vessel 22 and the main supply line 14.
- the second gas line 30 comprises a second valve 32 by means of which the flow communication between the auxiliary vessel 22 and the main supply line 14 can be opened and closed. This makes is possible to feed gas from the auxiliary vessel 22 to the main supply line 14.
- Both the first and the second gas lines 26, 30 are intended to pass gas in gaseous form and are therefore advantageous connected to an upper part of the auxiliary vessel 22.
- the second gas line 30 is connected to the main supply line at a location where the gas therein is in gaseous form, which is the case downstream the heat exchanger 19 i.e. gas evaporator.
- liquefied gas tank arrangement 10 comprises a third gas line 34, which here connects the auxiliary vessel 22 and the main supply line 14, at a location where the gas therein is in liquid form. Such location is upstream the heat exchanger 19 where the liquefied gas is evaporated.
- the upstream and downstream refers to normal gas flow direction from the tank 12 to the gas consumer.
- the third gas line 34 comprises a third valve 34 by means of which the flow communication between the auxiliary vessel 22 and the main supply line 14 can be opened and closed.
- the purpose of feed- ing liquefied gas into the vessel 22 is to cool it down.
- the third gas line 34 opens into the vessel 22 at upper part thereof via a set of spray nozzles 36 arranged in the vessel 22 at the end of the third gas line.
- the arrangement comprises advantageously a computer control unit 40, which is configured to control the operation of the assembly 20 according to the method of the invention. More particularly the computer control unit 40 comprising executable instructions to successively: open the first valve 28 to feed gaseous gas from the gaseous phase section 12.2 of the liquefied gas 12 tank into the auxiliary vessel 20; close the first valve 28 and close the space in the auxiliary vessel by maintaining the first 28, the second 30 and the third 34 valves closed; apply heat 24 into the auxiliary vessel for increasing the pressure in the closed space of the auxiliary vessel 22, thus forming pressurized gas; lead said pressurized gas controllably into the main supply line 14 by controllably opening the second valve 30; close the second valve 30 and close the space in the auxiliary vessel by maintained the first 28, the second 30 and the third 34 valves closed: feed liquefied gas from the liquid phase section 12.1 of the tank by opening the third valve 34 thus decreasing the pressure in the closed space of the auxiliary vessel 22; and close the third valve.
- the first valve 28 i.e. the valve in the first gas line connecting the ullage space of the tank 12 to the auxiliary vessel 22 is open. It is also a prerequisite that the pressure in the tank 12 is higher than a predetermined set value for opening the first valve 28, and higher the pressure in the auxiliary vessel 22 to commence the gas feed from the tank to the auxiliary vessel 22.
- the pressure level in the tank 12 when the first valve is opened is advantageously in a range of 0,4 bar(g) to 2,5 bar(g), and naturally the pressure in the auxiliary vessel 22 is lower at that step.
- valve 28 is maintained open for a period of time during which the gas flows into the auxiliary vessel 22.
- the valve may be closed after the pressure difference between the tank 12 and the vessel 22 is smaller than a predetermined set value and/or the pressure in the tank 12 is smaller than a predetermined set value and/or a predetermined time has elapsed from opening the first valve 28.
- the heater 24 is inactive i.e. no heat is applied to the vessel 22, the first valve 28 is open, the second valve 30 is closed, the third valve 34 is closed.
- the first valve 28 is closed, the second valve 30 is closed and the third valve 34 is closed.
- heat is applied to the auxiliary vessel 22 by activating the heater 24. Since the space in the auxiliary vessel 22 is closed the gas pressure in the vessel is increased due to the heating of the gas, substantially following the basics of the ideal gas equation.
- the heater 24 is maintained active until the pressure in the auxiliary vessel 22 is at least at a level of a predetermined filling pressure of the vessel 22.
- the second valve 32 in the second gas line 30 is activated i.e. opened. This step is shown in the view c).
- the valve is advantageously opened gradually so that gas is controllably admitted from the auxiliary vessel 22 to the main supply line 14.
- the heater 24 may be maintained active i.e. heat may be applied to the vessel 22, the first valve 28 is closed, the second valve 30 is at least partially open and the third valve 34 is closed.
- the heating is no necessarily continued but this way more gas can be admitted to the main supply line 14..
- This way it is possible continue gas admission from the vessel 22 to the main supply line 14 until the gas pressure in the vessel 22 is lower than a preset final pressure and/or the temperature of the gas in the vessel 22 is higher than a preset maximum temperature.
- the gas admission is stopped by closing the second valve 32.
- the heater 24 is inactive i.e. no heat is applied to the vessel 22, the first valve 28 is closed, the second valve 30 is closed.
- the third valve 34 in the third gas line is now opened. Since the third gas line 34 is connected to the main supply line 14 at location upstream the heat exchanger 18, the pressure circumstances will cause liquid gas to flow from the main supply line 14 into the auxiliary vessel 22. Thus, liquefied gas is led into the auxiliary vessel 22 by opening the third valve 34 while maintaining the first valve 28 and the second valve 32 closed.
- the gas in the vessel 22 is rapidly cooled when the liquefied gas is sprayed into the vessel.
- the cooling of gas causes also the pressure in the auxiliary vessel 22 to decrease rapidly, since the space is closed.
- the pressure of the gas in the auxiliary vessel is collapsed by means of the cooling effect of introduction of the liquefied gas, which effect is further intensified by the sprayed introduction of the liquefied gas.
- the heater 24 is inactive i.e. no heat is applied to the vessel 22, the first valve 28 is closed, the second valve 30 is closed and the third valve 34 is open.
- FIG 3 there is shown an embodiment of the invention where two assemblies 20, adapted for discharging gaseous gas from the tank 12, increase the pressure of the gas to an elevated pressure and feeding the gaseous gas at the elevated pressure to the main supply line 14, are connected to one liquefied gas tank 12.
- the operation of the assemblies can be staged so that while one of the assemblies receive gas from the tank 12 the other one supplies gas to the main supply line 14.
