Description
Two-stroke radial engine
The object of the invention is the two-stroke radial engine intended to be used in particular in vehicles with the propeller drive.
The two-stroke radial engine is known from the patent description US 1811625, in which pairs of interconnected cylinders are mounted radially on the crankcase toward the axis of the crankshaft, and they are covered with the mutual combustion head. One of cylinders of each pair has the inlet opening of the fuel mixture located in the middle of its sidewall, which is attached to the mutual fuel supply line, whereas the second of cylinders of each pair has, also on its sidewall, the outlet exhaust opening, which is connected with the exhaust collector. Pistons situated in cylinders are connected by oscillating connecting- rods with the crankshaft, and the crank throws, which belong to each pair of cylinders, have minor mutual angular displacements. Consequently, the piston in the cylinder, to which fuel is provided, is slightly belated in its motion compared with the other piston in the cylinder considering the exhaust removal, which enables this piston to open the outlet exhaust opening prior to opening the inlet opening of the fuel mixture by the second piston of this pair and it also decreases pressure and improves the fuel supply. In the known engine workspaces of particular pistons are isolated from the crankcase and from each other by their own piston sealing in cylinders, which causes the lack of the reciprocal influence of cylinders units in the radial system. However, this engine has not found any
wider practical application owing to its probable exploitative disadvantages related to the fuel induction and the compression in the workspace of cylinders.
Apart from that, the two-stroke engine is commonly known, which has the head with the ignition plug put on the cylinder and in the cylinder wall there is the opening of the inlet channel, through which the fuel mixture is supplied from the carburetor system into the cylinder space below the piston and connected with it the crankcase space, and moreover the opening of the inlet channel situated higher in the cylinder wall which discharges exhaust fumes into the exhaust collector. Both cylinder spaces, below and above the piston, are connected by side vertical rinsing channels, which enable the fuel mixture to relocate from the space below the piston to the workspace above the piston in its reciprocating motion. The piston in the known engine is connected with the help of the oscillating connecting-rod with the crank throw, located in the crankcase. The vertical distance between inlet channels and outlet channels is selected in such a way that these channels are alternately closed and opened with the use of the piston sidewall. The fundamental disadvantage of this engine is the presence of the fuel mixture in the crankcase, which prevents it from oil flooding that is used to the lubrication of moving parts, and as a result it enforces the use of fuel which contains some oil. In the course of the engine work oil together with the fuel mixture gets to the workspace above the piston and largely it is expelled outside along with exhaust fumes. Due to this fact the known two-stroke engine turns out not to be ecological enough and given the obligatory principles it has limited application. Furthermore, due to the lack of the separation between the crankcase space from the cylinder the engine is unsuitable in radial systems.
The radial engine according to the invention comprises at least three cylinders radially attached to the crankcase casing. Each cylinder is closed from above with the head with the ignition plug located in it, whereas from below it is closed with the partition, which separates the cylinder space from the interior of the crankcase. Additionally, above the partition the inlet channel is led to the cylinder, whereas over it the outlet channel is led out of the cylinder. Each cylinder has vertical rinsing channels, which connect its lower partition below the
piston with the workspace above the piston. Apart from that, in the middle of the partition of each cylinder the linear slide bearing is embedded, which is equipped from below with the sealing element. Through the slide bearing the push rod is led, favorably in the form of the grinded shaft. The upper end of the push rod is linked to the piston, while its lower end is linked in an oscillating manner to the articulated connecting-rod, situated in the crankcase. The connecting-rod is linked to the crankshaft in an oscillating manner via the piston pin assigned to it in the intermediary disk, embedded on the crank throw of the crankshaft.
In the first variant of the invention, in the head of each cylinder the injector is mounted, whereas the outlet of the fan assigned to it is favorably connected with the inlet channel of the cylinder.
In the second variant of the invention the output of the carburetor assigned to it is connected with the inlet channel of the cylinder, and the outlet of the fan assigned to it is favorably connected with the carburetor entry.
The positive feature of the radial engine according to the invention is the use of elements of the two-stroke engine, which considerably simplify the construction of the whole radial engine. One of advantages of the engine is the lowering of harmful combustion products expelled to the atmosphere. It is obtained as a consequence of the sealed partitions, which cut off cylinders spaces from one another and from the interior of the crankcase, which enables to separate the fuel and exhaust circulation from the lubrication system. Clean fuel and air without added lubricating oil is supplied to workspaces of cylinders, contrary to popular solutions of two-stroke engines which have been used so far. It contributes to the fact that expelled exhaust fumes do not contain any drops of lubricating oil. Furthermore, as a result of the faster rinsing of cylinder workspaces by air, in the first variant of the invention, or by the mixture of air and fuel, in the second variant of the invention, the removal of unburned fuel into the exhaust system is completely or considerably reduced. Therefore, there is no need to use the heavy resonance system in order to turn back unburned fuel parts so as to lower the level of expelled impurities, as it has been done in previous solutions of two- stroke engines. This feature of the engine according to the invention as well as
the lack of the complicated timing system of the valves operation, which is employed in commonly used four-stroke radial engines, makes this radial engine very light, with the simultaneous substantial enhancement of the ratio of obtained power to the weight of the whole construction.
The invention is presented on realization examples in the drawing, in which the fig. 1 shows the radial engine with three cylinders and this is the version with the injector in the side section, the fig. 2 illustrates the engine cylinder unit with the injector in the side section together with the fan attached to the cylinder inlet channel in the schematic drawing, the fig. 3 - the same cylinder unit in the section on the plane perpendicular to the former depiction, whereas in the fig. 4 the engine cylinder unit is shown without the injector in the side section together with the carburetor and the fan connected in series to the cylinder inlet channel in the schematic drawing.
The radial engine comprises three cylinders 2 radially fixed to the casing of the crankcase 1 Each cylinder 2 is closed from above with the head 3 with the ignition plug 4 situated in it, whereas from below it is closed with the sealed partition 5, which separates the internal cylinder 2 space from the interior of the crankcase 1 What is more, above the partition 5 the inlet channel 6 is led to the cylinder 2, whereas above it the outlet channel 7 is led out of the cylinder 2. The reciprocal opening of the inlet channel 6 and the outlet channel 7 along the cylinder 2 wail is done in such a way that it ensures the alternate opening of one channel and closing the other by the side surface of the piston 8, situated in the cylinder 2, in its reciprocating motion. Each cylinder 2 has vertical rinsing channels 9, which connect is lower space below the piston 8 with the workspace above this piston. Apart from that, in the middle of the partition 5 of each cylinder 2 the linear slide bearing 10 is embedded, which is equipped from below with the sealing element 12. Through the slide bearing 10 the push rod 12 is led in the form of the grinded shaft. The upper end of the push rod 12 is connected with the piston 8, whereas its lower end is connected with the articulated-type connecting- rod 13 in an oscillating manner, which is situated in the crankcase filled with
lubricating oil. The articulated connecting-rod 13 is connected by the other side with crankshaft 16 equipped with the counterweight 14 in an oscillating manner via the piston pin 16 assigned to it in the intermediary disk 17, embedded on the crank throw of the crankshaft 15.
In the first variant of the invention in the head 3 of each cylinder 2 the injector 18 is mounted, whereas the outlet of the fan W assigned to it is attached to the inlet channel 7 of the cylinder 2.
In the second variant of the invention to the inlet channel 7 of each cylinder 2 the output of the carburetor G assigned to it is attached, to whose entry the outlet of the fan W assigned to it is connected.
The engine operation according to the invention is similar to the operation of the known two-stroke engine.
In the first variant of the invention, at the moment of the activation, during the upward reciprocating motion of the piston 8 and the opening of the inlet channel 6 by this piston, air is sucked from the fan outlet into the lower space of the cylinder 2 below the piston 8 as well as into the opened from below rinsing channels 9. While the piston 8 moves further upward the complete closing of the outlet channel 7 occurs and fuel is transferred by the injector 18 to the workspace above the piston 8. When the piston 8 reaches the GMP (upper dead center) the ignition of the fuel mixture occurs from the spark of the ignition plug 4, and subsequently the piston 8 moves toward the DMP (lower dead center). In the space below the piston 8 the initial compression of air delivered there takes place, which after the opening of the upper slot of the rinsing channel 9 gets through to the workspace above the piston 8 and through the outlet channel 7 it pushes exhaust remains into the exhaust collector of the engine. After the piston 8 reaches the DMP (lower dead center) it again begins its upward reciprocating motion and the aforementioned cycle is repeated.
In the second variant of the invention air is supplied from the fan W output to the carburetor G, from where after mixing with fuel it goes to the inlet channel 6.
During the sliding motion of the piston 8 upward and when the inlet channel 6 is opened by it, the fuel mixture from the carburetor G is sucked into the lower
cylinder 2 space below the piston 8 as well as into the rinsing channels 9 opened from below. In the course of the further upward motion of the piston 8 the outlet channel 7 is closed, and when the piston 8 reaches the GMP (upper dead center) the ignition of the fuel mixture occurs in the cylinder 2 workspace above the piston 8, and then the piston 8 moves toward the DMP (lower dead center). In the space below the piston 8 as well as in rinsing channels 9 the initial compression of the fuel mixture takes place, which after the opening of the upper slots of rinsing channels 9 enters the workspace above the piston 8. The part of the fuel mixture pushes exhaust remains through the outlet channel 7 into the exhaust collector of the engine, whereas its substantial portion remains in the workspace of the cylinder 2 above the piston 8 as fuel to the following work cycle. After the piston 8 reaches the DMP {lower dead center) it again begins its upward sliding motion and the aforementioned cycle is repeated.
In both variants of the invention the reciprocating motion of each piston 8 transfers through push rods 2 attached to pistons onto articulated connecting- rods 13, located in the crankcase 1 filled with oil, which with the help of the intermediary disk 17 make the crankshaft 5 rotate.
The use of the fan W which initially compresses air has the purpose to improve the rinsing of cylinders 2 and, in the case when the engine is employed in aerial vehicles, it should increase the air supply to cylinders 2 if flights take place at higher altitudes.
The separate lubricating system is employed in order to lubricate piston and crank units of the engine, and this system is known from the four-stroke engines.
