- a vapor phase and a liquid phase of the working medium can be adjusted in the expansion tank integrated in the waste heat recovery circuit such that a condensation pressure results at which the subcooling of the working medium remains substantially constant. If a supercooled, liquid working medium arrives from the condenser into the expansion tank, then part of the steam contained therein condenses, and the fluid pressure of the working medium in the expansion tank condenses decreases. If, on the other hand, steam from the condenser arrives in the expansion tank, the fluid pressure in the expansion tank increases due to the additional volume of steam. As a result, complete condensation of the working fluid upon exiting the condenser is ensured without requiring an additional external control mechanism. By arranging the pump immediately downstream of the expansion tank, it is therefore possible to ensure that the working medium of the waste heat recovery circuit always enters the pump in liquid form. This results in that no unwanted cavitation can occur within the pump.
