Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a modular lock for use in a machine guard system, comprising a lock body adapted to be fastened to a doorframe, a door, or a gate.
  • the invention also relates to a locking system comprising such a modular lock.
  • machine guard systems In order to prevent this from happening, many manufacturers are required to use machine guard systems to protect the users from the machine, and the machine from the users. In order to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering a potentially dangerous work area, machine guard systems are often locked with some kind of lock.
  • An object of the present invention is therefore to alleviate the abovementioned problems and provide a modular lock for use in a machine guard system.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide a modular lock which can be mounted in a number of different configurations, thus allowing the same modular lock to be used for several different kinds of situations.
  • a modular lock for use in a machine guard system.
  • the modular lock comprises a lock body adapted to be fastened to a doorframe, a door, or a gate.
  • the lock body comprises a lock insert receiving portion.
  • the modular lock further comprises a lock insert adapted to be received by the lock insert receiving portion.
  • the lock insert is adapted for receiving a locking member.
  • the lock insert is mountable in at least two distinct positions relative to the lock insert receiving portion such that the modular lock is usable for locking both sliding doors and swing doors.
  • the lock body is symmetrical over a plane extending perpendicular to a central longitudinal axis of the lock insert and which intersects the center of the modular lock and the center of the lock insert receiving portion.
  • the term modular refers to the modular lock being arrangeable in a plurality of different configurations using the same set of components so that it can be used in different situations.
  • the modular lock can be arranged to be used with either a slide door, a right hinged swing door, a left hinged swing door, a curtain walling system e.g. a sectional garage door that slides downwards when closing, or a fence gate, all using the same set of components.
  • Having a lock that is modular allows the producer to stock fewer lock models, as a modular lock can be used for a number of customer needs.
  • inventory keeping is streamlined and the production of the locks requires fewer processes, as fewer components are needed.
  • the risk of a customer buying the wrong type of lock is greatly reduces as the same kind of lock can be used for a plurality of customer needs.
  • a machine guard system is herein defined as a system used for protecting personnel from the dangers of automated equipment, while also protecting the equipment itself.
  • a machine guard system can also be used for non-automated equipment that is dangerous for non-authorized personnel to operate.
  • the lock insert is adapted to be received by the lock insert receiving portion and the lock insert is adapted to receive a locking member.
  • Receive is herein defined as one part being connected to another in such a way that the intended effect of this connection is achieved.
  • the at least two different positions that the lock insert is mountable in are distinct, meaning that one position is clearly and readily distinguishable from the other with the naked eye.
  • the benefit of this is that one and the same modular lock can be used in at least two distinctly different situations, such as one where a sliding door is to be locked and one where a swing door is to be locked.
  • the doorframe that the lock body is adapted to be fastened to comprises at least doorpost and lintel, meaning that the lock body is adapted to be fastened so that a longitudinal axis of the modular lock is either in a horizontal orientation or in a vertical position.
  • the modular lock can be fastened to the doorpost in a horizontal position or to the lintel in a vertical position.
  • Other similar arrangements are of course conceivable.
  • the distinct positions in which the lock insert is mountable are to be understood as being distinct either through their rotational separation, e.g. that the lock insert is rotated 90° between the first and second position, or through their axial positioning, i.e. that the lock insert is mountable in a second position that is not completely intersecting a first position.
  • the lock insert in a first position of the at least two distinct positions, is, relative to a second position of the at least two distinct positions, rotated in relation to the lock insert receiving portion.
  • the modular lock can be arranged to be used with a sliding door by rotating the lock insert so that the locking member can be received from a first direction, and the modular lock can in another situation be arranged to be used with a swing door by rotating the lock insert so that the locking member can be received from a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction.
  • first and second direction do not need to be perpendicular to each other, but could also be arranged relative to each other at other angles, e.g. 20°-90°, such as 45°. Also larger and smaller separations are conceivable.
  • the transition between the first and second direction can either be such that the lock insert is rotated continuously, or step-wise e.g. 5° at a time.
  • the first position of the at least two distinct positions is separated from the second position of the at least two distinct positions by at least 20°.
  • the first position of the at least two distinct positions is arranged at an angle to the second position of the at least two distinct positions, such that they are separated by at least 20°.
  • the first and second position could be separated by 20°-90°, such as 45°. Also larger and smaller separations are conceivable.
  • the lock insert comprises a locking member receiving recess.
  • the locking member receiving recess can for example be provided as a V-shaped recession, a recession shaped as a square cuboid or a spherical recession.
  • the lock insert comprises a locking pin arranged along a central longitudinal axis of the lock insert, the locking pin having a blocked mode and an unblocked mode.
  • the locking pin is arranged to prevent the locking member from being received by and removed from the locking member receiving recess when the locking pin is in the blocked mode, and the locking pin is arranged to allow the locking member to be received by and moved from the locking member receiving recess when the locking pin is in the unblocked mode.
  • the locking pin being arranged along a central longitudinal axis of the lock insert is to be understood as meaning that a central axis of the locking pin substantially intersects the central longitudinal axis of the lock insert.
  • the lock insert comprises a cylinder.
  • the locking pin being arranged to prevent the locking member from being received by and removed from the locking member receiving recess when the locking pin is in the blocked mode is to be understood as meaning that, when the locking pin is in its blocked mode, it forces the cylinder to interfere with the locking member so that the locking member cannot be removed from or received by the locking member receiving recess without moving the cylinder.
  • the locking member is consequently prevented from being received by and removed from the locking member receiving recess.
  • the cylinder is allowed to move and the locking member can therefore be received by and removed from the locking member receiving recess.
  • the modular lock comprises a locking element, wherein the blocked mode is caused by the locking element being arranged so that it prevents the locking pin from entering the unblocked mode.
  • the locking element may be mountable on the lock body, either directly or indirectly.
  • the locking element is arranged to be able to prevent the locking pin from allowing the locking member to be moved to and from the locking member receiving recess by making sure that the locking pin cannot enter its unblocked mode, i.e., the locking element is arranged to be able to put the locking pin in its blocked mode.
  • the locking element may be connected to one or more locking and unlocking mechanisms, e.g. keypads, keycard readers, buttons, or pin locks. By being connected to any of these locking and unlocking mechanisms, the locking element can take the locking pin from its blocked mode to its unblocked mode in various ways.
  • the locking pin is moved from its blocked mode to its unblocked mode as a result of a user using a key, entering a password, pushing a button and/or using a keycard. It is also conceivable that the locking pin can be moved from a blocked mode to an unblocked mode from the inside of a machine guard system by means of a so-called "panic button”.
  • the locking element has at least a non-restricting state and a restricting state.
  • the non-restricting state the locking element is arranged so that the locking pin can move between the blocked mode and the unblocked mode, and in the restricting state, the locking element has been displaced relative to the non-restricting state so that the locking element is restricting the freedom of movement of the locking pin.
  • the displacement of the locking element could for example be one of or a combination of at least the following: linear movement, rotational movement and pivoting translation.
  • the locking element in the restricting state, has been axially displaced relative to the non-restricting state so that the locking element is restricting the freedom of movement of the locking pin.
  • the locking element comprises a locking bar comprising a recess.
  • the locking bar In the non-restricting state, the locking bar is rotated around its central axis relative to the restricting state so that the recess is arranged so that the locking pin can move between the blocked mode and the unblocked mode.
  • the recess may for example be provided as a through hole through the locking bar, arranged so that the locking pin can enter the recess when the locking bar is rotated from its restricting state.
  • the recess may also be provided by removing a portion of the locking rod so that it is arranged as e.g. a half-cylinder, so that when the locking rod is in its restricting state, the locking pin is prevented from moving between the blocked mode and the unblocked mode by the locking rod, and when the locking rod is rotated to its non-restricting state, the portion that has been removed from the locking rod allows the locking pin to move between the blocked mode and the unblocked mode.
  • the locking element comprises a locking bar comprising a recess.
  • the locking element has at least a second non-restricting state. In the second non-restricting state, the locking bar is rotated around its central axis relative to the restricting state so that the recess is arranged so that the locking pin can move between the blocked mode and the unblocked mode.
  • the lock body is symmetrical over at least one plane intersecting its geometrical center.
  • the modular lock is symmetrical over a plane which is perpendicular to a central longitudinal axis of the lock insert and which intersects the center of the modular lock and the center of the lock insert receiving portion. In one exemplary embodiment, this corresponds to the upper half and the lower half of the lock body being symmetrical mirror images.
  • the modular lock is mountable on doors or gates that are either left hinged or right hinged.
  • Mountable is herein defined as meaning that the modular lock can be mounted in a way so that it is readily usable by a user, i.e. the handle should not be upside down, locking should always be done in the same direction relative to the door post, and any keypad, pin locks or keycard readers should not be upside down. It should be understood that the modular lock is mountable on other kinds of doors and gates than those that are either left hinged or right hinged, e.g. sliding doors.
  • the modular lock comprises a backplate.
  • the modular lock is mountable to the doorframe, door or gate by means of fastening the backplate to the lock body so that the doorframe, door or gate is held in place between the backplate and the lock body by means of friction.
  • the locking element comprises an actuator, wherein the actuator is arranged to at least move the locking element back and forth from the second non-restricting state to the restricting state.
  • the actuator can for example be an electrical actuator, or a pneumatic actuator, or a combination of pneumatic and electrical actuators.
  • the locking member is a locking tongue.
  • a locking system comprises a modular lock according to any embodiment of the first aspect of the invention, and a locking member adapted to be fastened to a doorframe, a door, or a gate.
  • the modular lock is adapted to receive the locking member.
  • Fig. 1a is a perspective view of a modular lock 1 arranged next to a fence door 2.
  • Modular lock 1 comprises a lock body 3, a lock insert 5 and a tumbler 45.
  • Lock insert 5 is shaped as a square cuboid having four rectangular faces of equal dimensions, two square faces, and a longitudinal axis C going through said square faces. It should be understood that lock insert 5 may be shaped differently, e.g. as a cylinder or as a right prism.
  • lock insert 5 is adapted to receive a locking member 13 and comprises a locking member receiving recess 7.
  • Locking member receiving recess 7 is arranged centrally on one of the four rectangular faces of lock insert 5.
  • the opening of locking member receiving recess 7 is provided with a chamfer 23 arranged to guide locking member 13 into locking member receiving recess 7.
  • Chamfer 23 can be provided on one or both of the upper and lower edge of the opening of locking member receiving recess 7, and on one or both of the lateral edges of the opening, as is shown in Fig. 1a-b .
  • Chamfer 23 can also be provided either on only the lateral edges of the opening, or only on the upper and lower edge of the opening.
  • locking member 13 is provided in the form of a locking tongue.
  • the locking member could be shaped as a loop or a latch.
  • Lock body 3 comprises a lock insert receiving portion 9, arranged as a recess shaped for receiving lock insert 5.
  • Lock insert receiving portion 9 is provided with two apertures 11 facing two different directions, so that lock insert 5 can be received by lock insert receiving portion 9 in two distinct orientations without preventing locking member receiving recess 7 from receiving locking member 13, i.e. apertures 11 are aligned with two of the possible positions in which lock insert 5 can be received by lock insert receiving portion 9. At least one of the two apertures 11 is big enough to allow lock insert 5 to be inserted into lock insert receiving portion 9 through it. It is of course possible that lock insert receiving portion is provided with more than two apertures 11, so that lock insert 5 can be received by lock insert receiving portion 9 in more than two positions.
  • each of apertures 11 is wide enough to align with the locking member receiving recess 7 for more than one possible position of lock insert 5.
  • lock insert receiving portion 9 could be provided with only one aperture that is wide enough to allow lock insert 5 to be positioned in a plurality of positions without losing its ability to receive locking member 13.
  • lock insert 5 is separated from lock insert receiving portion 9.
  • lock insert 5 has been received by lock insert receiving portion 9 and is arranged in a first orientation, which allows modular lock 1 to be used with swing doors.
  • Lock body 3 further comprises a handle 15 that can be used to maneuver the door or gate to which lock body 3 can be fastened, and a cover plate 35 that covers the inside of lock body 3.
  • lock insert 5 has been mounted in a second orientation which allows modular lock 1 to be used with sliding doors. It should be understood that sliding doors also comprise sectional garage doors or curtain walling that slide upwards when opened.
  • Fig. 3a shows a perspective view of lock insert 5 and Fig. 3b shows an exploded view of lock insert 5.
  • Lock insert 5 comprises a first insert portion 25, a second insert portion 27, a locking member receiving recess 7, a locking pin 17, a cylinder 19, rods 47, rod receiving recesses 49, and an indication device 21.
  • First insert portion 25 and second insert portion 27 are arranged to accommodate at least locking pin 17, cylinder 19, rods 47, and indication device 21, which are all arranged to be held in place by the joining of first insert portion 25 and second insert portion 27.
  • Rods 47 are held in place by rod receiving recesses 49, and are arranged to protect locking member receiving recess 7 from wear and to stabilize locking member 13 when it has been received by locking member receiving recess 7.
  • Both first insert portion 25 and second insert portion 27 are provided with chamfer 23.
  • both first insert portion 25 and second insert portion 27 are provided with slanted protrusions 24, which are arranged to assist chamfer 23 in guiding locking member 13 into locking member receiving recess 7.
  • Indication device 21 is arranged to detect when locking member 13 has been received by locking member receiving recess 7. It does so by being provided with a proximity sensor 29, which sends a signal to communication unit 31 upon sensing the presence of a locking member 13. Said communication unit 31 then transmits this signal to a user, or a control system, by use of either wired or wireless communication, so that it is possible to know whether locking member 13 has engaged modular lock 1 or not.
  • communication device 31 is provided with a wire 32.
  • Locking pin 17 comprises a spring 33 and is provided in a position so that its central axis aligns with longitudinal axis C, thus making lock insert 5 mountable in any rotational position with respect to locking pin 17.
  • Spring 33 is arranged to cause locking pin 17 to return to its starting position after being displaced axially in a direction away from locking member receiving recess 7. This is more clearly shown in Figs. 4a-c .
  • Figs. 4a-c show the interaction between locking member 13, locking pin 17, cylinder 19 and spring 33.
  • both locking pin 17 and cylinder 19 are in their starting positions and locking member 13 is separated from lock insert 5.
  • locking member 13 is between a state in which it is received by locking member receiving recess 7 and a state in which it is not received by locking member receiving recess 7.
  • cylinder 19 forces locking pin 17 to displace in the same direction.
  • locking pin 17 is in a displaced position and spring 33 is compressed.
  • Locking pin 17 can be in either an unblocked mode or a blocked mode. In an unblocked mode, locking pin 17 is able to move from a starting position in a direction parallel with longitudinal axis C to a displaced position, thus compressing spring 33. In a blocked mode, locking pin 17 is prevented from moving from said starting position to said displaced position. Thus, locking member 13 can only be moved to and from locking member receiving recess 7 when locking pin 17 is in an unblocked mode.
  • cylinder 19 blocks part of locking member receiving recess 7 and, since locking pin 17 is prevented from moving from its starting position to its displaced position, prevents locking member 13 from being received by locking member receiving recess 7 (see Fig. 4a ).
  • the locking pin 17 is in a blocked mode, the locking member 13 is also prevented from being removed from the locking member receiving recess 7 (see Fig. 4C ).
  • Figs. 5a-b show schematic drawings showing the modular lock 1 after cover plate 35 has been removed.
  • lock body 3 comprises a locking element 37 arranged to be moveable to and from a state in which it restricts the freedom of movement of locking pin 17.
  • Locking element 37 can only enter a restricting state, i.e. a state in which it has been displaced so that it restricts the freedom of movement of locking pin 17, when locking pin 17 is in its starting position.
  • a restricting state i.e. a state in which it has been displaced so that it restricts the freedom of movement of locking pin 17, when locking pin 17 is in its starting position.
  • locking pin 17 is in its blocked mode.
  • locking pin 17 is in its unblocked mode.
  • the non-restricting state is characterized in that that when the locking element 37 is in a non-restricting mode a space 51 is formed into which space 51 the locking pin can be moved into, thus allowing for a locking member 13 to be received into the locking member receiving recess 7 or to be removed from the locking member receiving recess 7.
  • the locking element is in a restricting state the locking element 37 is arranged in a position such that there is no space 51 available and thus, when locking element 37 is in its restricting state, locking pin 17 is prevented from entering its displaced position.
  • locking member receiving recess 7 cannot receive or release locking member 13.
  • Fig. 5a locking element 37 is shown in its non-restricting state and in Fig.
  • FIG. 5b locking element 37 is shown in its restricting state.
  • Figs. 5a-b also show the interaction between tumbler 45 and locking element 37.
  • tumbler 45 is arranged as a key receiving unit which is arranged to move locking element 37 from its non-restricting state to its restricting state.
  • Tumbler 45 could also be arranged as an electronically controlled tumbler that is arranged to move locking element 37 upon receiving a signal from a keycard receiving unit, a code lock unit, or similar.
  • Locking element 37 further comprises a locking bar 39.
  • Locking bar 39 is provided with a recess 41 arranged to allow locking pin 17 to move from its starting position to its displaced position when locking bar 39 is rotated so that recess 41 aligns with locking pin 17.
  • rotation of locking bar 39 while locking element 37 is in its restricting state causes locking element 37 to enter a second non-restricting state. This is shown in Figs. 6a-b .

  • Fig. 7 shows lock body 3 without lock insert 5 and locking element 37.
  • Lock body 3 is symmetrical over a plane extending perpendicular to a central axis of lock insert receiving portion 9 and intersecting the center of lock body 3.
  • lock body 3 is provided with a line of symmetry A.
  • Lock body 3 being symmetrical enables lock insert 5, locking element 37 and any fastening elements to be arranged in a mirrored configuration compared to that which is disclosed in Figs.1-6 .
  • additional configurability of the modular lock is achieved.
