Description of Example Embodiments
Abrasive products may be, for example, sanding products for surface finishing of object surface(s) of applications. Suitable object surface(s) may include various materials, such as wood, metal, composites, plastics, minerals or different coatings such as paints or varnishes. Abrasive products may therefore be used for example, in different industries, such as automotive industry, wood and furniture industry, ships and boats, building and construction sites, composites industry as well as in metal finishing industry, to name a few. Common abrasive methods may comprise for example grinding, polishing, buffing, honing, cutting, drilling, sharpening, lapping or sanding.
Removal of materials with different properties and behaviour may require different properties from the abrasive product. Abrasive products are manufactured in a wide range of products. There exists abrasive products made of different materials or they have different shapes. One example of abrasive products is an abrasive roll comprising a rolled abrasive product. The rolled abrasive product may consist of a long strip of abrasive product that is rolled, wrapped, around a core. The long strip of abrasive product may be a perforated abrasive product comprising a multiple abrasive product pieces, abrasives, which are linked to one another successively. These abrasives are arranged to be torn off into suitable pieces usually along a perforation between the individual abrasives. The linked abrasives may have different shapes, usually rectangular or circular with a narrow perforated bridge linking the discs. The long strip of abrasive product may also be one, long, uniform, piece of abrasive product. This strip is arranged to be torn off into suitable pieces without perforations.
Abrasive products need to be protected from dirt, dust and abrasive contact with other non-object surfaces in order to maintain their abrasive features; demanding sanding operations require clean and undamaged sanding products. Therefore, the abrasive product, are usually packed for storage, transport and/or use. The package may protect the product from physical damage during storage, transport and use.
Usually in today's abrasive product roll packages the roll of the abrasive product is arranged freely on the bottom of the package. The roll may then move inside the package thus having an abrasive contact(s) with the surface(s) of the package especially during the transport and/or use, for example, when the product is extracted from the package. Therefore, the abrasive product may be damaged in the abrasive product roll package if it is movable inside the package. In the following, several embodiments of the invention will be described in the context of an abrasive product roll package for providing a package that protects the abrasive product or at least its abrasive coated side from contact with the inner surface(s) of the package during storage, transport and/or use. In addition, the abrasive product roll package according to the invention is also user-friendly. The package enables that the rolled product may be extracted, withdrawn, from the package without contact at least by the coated side with the inner surface(s) of the package or with the surface(s) or edge of an extraction slot of the package through which the rolled product is arranged to be extracted from the package. It is to be noted, however, that the invention is not limited to abrasive product rolls only. In fact, material of a product roll may be any material that is advantageous to be protected from unnecessary physical contact and dust.
The abrasive product roll package may comprise two parts, a package body and a lid. The package body comprises an open side and the open side is arranged to be closed by the lid i.e. the lid is arranged to close the package body. The lid is further openable, so that the product can be extracted from the package. The package body and the lid form a package, box, around the roll when they are put together. These two parts may be united by a hinge like a bridge at one side of the package, but the package may also comprise two separate parts. The bridge may be made of the same material as the package body and the lid, but it may also be a separate hinge structure made of some other material. The package body and the lid may also be made of different materials. The lid may be paper based material and the package body may be plastic material or vice versa. In addition, the package body and/or the lid may comprise two or more different materials, for example, paper based material and plastic material.
The abrasive product roll package may further comprise positioning openings at both ends of the package, wherein the ends are end sides of the package and the end sides are opposite sides of the package. The openings may be arranged in the center area of the end sides of the package. The openings at both ends of the package are formed from cut-outs that are composed of two parts, one part in the package body and the other part in the lid. The cut-outs are arranged to the end side of the package body part and the lid part. The positioning openings are arranged positioning the abrasive product roll inside the product roll package. Further to that, the positioning openings are arranged to form a holder, a fixation, for the protruding ends of the core of the abrasive product roll. The protruding ends of the core are so called supporting axel parts. The protruding ends of the core of the product roll are extensions of the roll core extending out of the product roll; the roll core is longer than the width of the product roll. For example, the roll to be packed may be provided with a core that is approximately two centimeter longer than the width of the rolled product strip i.e. the length of the protruding ends of the core may be approximately one centimeter. The length of the protruding ends i.e. extensions of the core may, however, be longer or shorter than the above mentioned 1 centimeter; the length of the extensions of the core may depend on the width of the roll and/or inner dimensions of the package. The roll may be fixed to the package by placing the extensions of the roll core into the positioning openings in the ends of the package so that the roll is fixed essentially on the center line of the package and thereby contact(s) between abrasive product and package may be avoided. The openings which the cut-outs form at the ends of the package make it possible to place and close the package around the roll when it is still on the roller shaft in the rolling machine. However, instead of the protruding core ends of the abrasive product roll it is also possible use some other supporting axel parts. Supporting axel parts may be, for example, separate extension parts that can be arranged on both ends of the roll so that extensions extend out of the product roll. In addition supporting axel parts may be, for example, ends of a bar that is arranged inside the roll. The bar ends extend of the product roll; the bar is longer than the width of the product roll. The size of positioning openings may be such that the core may rotate when arranged to the positioning openings. One way to brake the product is to press the lid down and clamp the axel parts when the product is torn off. The further purpose of the positioning openings in both ends of the package may be to function as bearing housings when the abrasive product is extracted from the package so that the the positioning openings bears core.
The inner dimensions of the package have to be bigger than the diameter and width of the roll to avoid contact between the abrasive product and the inner surface(s) of the surrounding abrasive product roll package. When abrasive product pieces are linked to one another and rolled into a roll they do not move or glide mutually neither by packing nor by extraction. Further, if the roll is fixed inside the package the products will touch the package with the mineral side neither by storage nor by extraction. Possible materials for the package may be, for example, paper based, plastic material, or some other suitable material and the material of the core may be, for example, plastic, paper or some other suitable material. The outer shape, design and/or material of the package may freely be chosen to be suitable for an abrasive product roll arranged to be packed. In addition to the protective properties of the package, it is advantageous if the package is easy to use. For example, extraction of rolled products may be easy, although the end of material of the rolled product is covered and protected from physical contacts and dust. The end of material of the rolled product is in this context the end of the material that is arranged to be used next.
The lid of the package may be functional and it may be adjusted in different positions; fully open, fully closed, partly opened to form an extraction slot and closed with the front tab out for holding the end of the linked product chain and protecting the same end.
The package may further comprise the opportunity to brake the roll, for example, with a finger in the core, when tearing off a piece from the abrasive product. In addition, it may be possible to roll back extensive material into protection under the lid and inside the package by turning the core from outside of the package by hands. Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a closed product roll package 100 according to an example embodiment. The package 100 comprises a package body part 101 and a lid part 102. The package body 101 is arranged to form the actual box part of the package 100. A front wall 104 and an end wall 106 of the package body 101 are shown, as well as, a lid end tab 109 and a back end tab finger 1 12 of the lid part 102. Further, a positioning opening 120 in the end part of package is shown. The package body part 101 may have, for example, a rectangular shape or a cubic shape of a box. The positioning openings are arranged to be formed for the package 100 when lid part 102 of the package 100 is closed.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the product roll package 100 shown in fig. 1. A bottom 103, the front wall 104, a back wall 105, end walls 106, cut-outs of the end walls 107 of the package body 101 are shown. A lid front tab 108, the lid end tab 109, and cut-outs of the lid end tab 1 10, two end tab fingers 1 1 1 , 1 12, of the lid 102 are also show. Further an optional material bridge, a hinge, 1 13 between the package body 101 and the lid part 102 is shown. The lid front tab 108 may also be called product extraction tab due to its functionality.
The cut-outs 107, 1 10 define the positioning opening 120 when the package is closed. Positioning openings 120 are arranged to position the core of the product roll (not shown) into the center of the package 100. The roll may be locked inside the package 100 without touching the inner surface of the package 100.
The front tab 108 of the lid 102 may be left outside i.e. open as a dust protection visor for the rest of product which is left out as much as the front tab portion, visor, covers for facilitating the extraction of the next piece of the product. When the front tab 108 of the lid 102 is left outside, open, the lid 102 is not closed completely, but a slit is left for the linked chain of products to be pulled out. As mentioned above, when the core ends of the roll are protruding from the package 101 it is possible to put a finger into the open end of the core and brake the roll when cutting off the product at the perforations or at a desired length of the rolled product. Another way of braking the roll and product is to press the lid 102 down i.e. to close the extraction slot (532 of fig. 5, 632 of fig. 6, and 732 of fig. 7, 932 of fig. 9) of the package 100. The cut-outs 107 in the end walls 106 and the cut-outs 1 10 in the lid end tabs 109 will then clamp around the core and hold the roll when tearing off the product or piece(s) of the product.
In a closed package 100, the two end tab fingers 1 1 1 , 1 12 at both ends may be placed on different sides of the end walls 106 of the package 100, inside and outside. The front tab fingers 1 1 1 may be arranged outside and the back end tab fingers 1 12 may be arranged inside the end walls 106 of the package 100 or vice versa. This may create a torsion in the end tabs 109 and thereby higher friction which may hold the lid 102 in an adjusted position, when the package 100 is closed. There may also be indentations between the cooperating surfaces of the lid 102 and the body 101 to create a desired hold for the lid 102 at different positions between the open and closed states of the lid. In other words, the lid may be adjusted and/or hold in desired positions with help of desired friction arranged by tab fingers 1 1 1 , 1 12 or indentation(s) between package body 101 and lid parts 102.
Figure 3a shows a widespread surface of the package 100 of fig. 1 according to an embodiment. The bottom 103, the front wall 104, the back wall 105, end walls 106 and cut-outs of the end walls 107 of the package body 101 are show. Further, the lid front tab 108, the lid end tab 109, cut-outs of the lid end tab 1 10 and two end tab fingers 1 1 1 , 1 12, of the lid 102 are also shown. Also the optional material bridge, hinge, 1 13 between the package body 101 and the lid 102 is shown. This widespread surface of the package 100 may be assembled by folding its parts in place.
Figure 3b shows another widespread surface of the package 100 of fig. 1 according to an example embodiment. The bottom 103, the front wall 104, the back wall 105, end walls 106 and cut-outs of the end walls 107 of the package body 101 are show also. Further, the lid front tab 108, the lid end tab 109, cut-outs of the lid end tab 1 10 and two end tab fingers 1 1 1 , 1 12, of the lid 102 are also show. Also the optional material bridge, hinge, 1 13 between the package body 101 and the lid 102 is shown. This widespread surface of the package 100 may be assembled by gluing. Figure 4 shows a cross section of a product roll package 400 according to an example embodiment. A bottom 403, a front wall 404, a back wall 405, an end wall 406, a lid 402, a lid front tab 408, a lid end tab 409, and a lid end tab finger 41 1 of the lid 402 and a positioning opening 420 in the end of package are shown from this view. In this embodiment, the lid end tab finger 41 1 is arranged inside the end wall 406 and the openable lid front tab 408 is in closed position, wherein it is arranged to close an extraction slot between the edge of package body front part 404 and the lid 402. Figure 5 shows a product roll package 500 according to an example embodiment. A lid front tab 508 is in an open position i.e. outside the package 500 in this example embodiment. In this position of the lid front tab 508, the product can be extracted from the package 500 and the lid front tab 508 may further cover the end of the product. Also, a front wall 504, an end wall 506, a lid part 502, a lid end tab 509, an end back tab finger 512 of the lid 502 and a positioning opening 520 in the end of package are shown. In this embodiment, the back end tab finger 512 is arranged outside the end wall 506 and front end tab finger inside.
Figure 6 shows a cross section view of a product roll package 600 comprising a product roll 630 inside in a situation where the lid front tab 608 is in open position and the product 631 is extracted through an extraction slot 632 with mineral side of the product 631 facing out according to an example embodiment. The mineral side is facing out, when the product 631 is rolled around the core 633 the mineral side on the outer surface of the roll, not facing the core 633. The product 631 is extracted from the package 600 so that there is a gap between the lid front tab 608 and the product 631. The gap enables safe extraction of the product 631 so that the mineral surface of the product does not have physical contact with the package 600 or with the lid 602 or lid front tab 608. Figure 7 shows a cross section view of a product roll package 700 comprising a product roll 730 inside in a situation where the lid front tab 708 is open and the product 731 is extracted through an extraction slot 732 with mineral side of the product 731 facing in according to an example embodiment. The mineral side is facing in, when the product 731 is rolled around the core 733 the mineral side on the inner surface of the roll thus facing the core 733. The product 731 is extracted from the package 700 so that there is a gap between an edge of the front wall 704 and the product 731. The gap enables safe extraction of the product 731 so that the mineral surface of the product does not have physical contact with the package 600 or with the front wall 704.
Figure 8 shows a product roll 800 with protruding core ends 810 according to an example embodiment. The product is rolled, wrapped, around the core so that the protruding core ends 810 are left uncovered on either side of the product i.e. there is no product around the protruding core ends 810. Figure 9 shows a cross section view of a product roll package 900 with a product roll 930 inside according to an example embodiment. A lid front tab 908 of the product roll package 900 is open so that the product 931 can be extracted through an extraction slot 932. Figure 10 shows the package 900 of fig. 9 when unfolded.

Figure 12 shows a product roll package 950 comprising a hooking means 952 for the product roll package 950 according to an example embodiment. An arm 954 of the hooking means 952 is arranged to be hooked to the package 950 through a core 955 of a product roll 951 inside the product roll package 950. In other words, the arm 954 may be pushed through the core 955 so that the package 900 will be engaged to the hooking means 952 via the core 955. This hooking can be done without removing the protective package 950 around the roll 951. The shape of the hooking means 952 or the arm 954 may be freely selected, shape(s) are not restricted to shown embodiment. It is also possible that the hooking means 952 is arranged to be an additional part of the product roll package 950. Figure 14 shows a cross section of a product roll package 200 comprising two separate parts, a lid part 201 and a body part 202 according to an example embodiment. The product roll package 200 functions as a package according to the invention that is assembled from a one-piece preform Examples of one-piece preforms are shown, for example, in figures 3a and 3b. The lid part 201 and the body part 202 also comprise cut outs 207, 210 which are arranged to form positioning openings when the package 200 is assembled and closed.
Figure 15 shows the assembled product roll package 200 of figure 14 fully closed. The lid part 201 is arranged inside the body part 202. Also one positioning opening 220 is shown. Figure 16 shows the assembled product roll package 200 of figure 14 with a lid front tab 208 of the lid part 201 open. Also one positioning opening 220 is shown.
The construction of the product roll package according to the invention will enable packing of the product rolls when the rolls are rolled and when they are still on the roller shaft in the rolling machine. This is possible, because the package can be closed around the core on the shaft and need not to be handled again in a separate packing operation. In addition, when the package is opened completely the roll may easily be removed and a new or the same roll inserted again. Further, if the end of the material product strip is pulled out to much and outside the edge of the protective front tab, it is possible to roll the roll back by turning the protruding core end without opening the lid. The protruding product strip under the front tab can be easily gripped and it may be locked in its position by pressing the lid down against the edge of the front wall of the package. When shrink wrapping one or more packages for transport and storing, the shrink wrap may lock the protruding core ends from turning and rolling up the material inside the package during transport and handling.
The package according to the invention is suitable to use for a material roll comprising at least one abrasive material side, but also for some other material comprising at least one sensitive side, which at least one sensitive side needs to be protected from physical contact and/or dust.
It is obvious that the present invention is not limited solely to the above- presented embodiments, but it can be modified within the scope of the appended claims.
