Description

High pressure fuel pump
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a pump assembly method. In particular, but not exclusively, the invention relates to an assembly of a high pressure common rail pump having a separate flange for use in a fuel injection system in delivering fuel under pressure to a combustion space of an internal combustion engine. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Fuel injection systems for modern internal combustion engines, particularly compression ignition engines, comprise a plurality of fuel injectors arranged to deliver an atomized spray of high-pressure fuel to a respective combustion chamber of the engine.
Fuel leaves the storage tank, goes to an accumulator volume or a rail and then arrives into the injector. The rail comprises a reservoir for high-pressure fuel. Fuel is pumped to the rail from a storage tank by a fuel pump assembly. In a typical example, the fuel pump assembly includes a low-pressure transfer pump, which serves to convey fuel from the tank to the pump assembly, and a high-pressure pump which elevates the pressure of the fuel to the injection pressure, typically of the order of 2000 bar.
The high-pressure pump comprises one or more pumping heads arranged to receive a pumping plunger or pumping element. The pump further comprises a drive assembly for driving reciprocal movement of the pumping element.
Unit pumps are a family of high pressure diesel fuel injection pumps where each cylinder of the engine is fed by a separate fuel pump. Regarding the common rail applications, a new concept is rising where the fuel rail is being fed by only one unit pump instead of conventional common rail pumps.
Figure 1 of the state of art is an illustration of some of the components of a fuel unit pump assembly. The unit pump is known for its compact structure, which is made of a one-piece forged part comprising a flange mounted on the respective engine interface.
Forming this flange and additional features (necessary for low pressure fuel connections) during the forging process requires high rates of material flow and complexity in the forging die. This non-uniform geometry can be distorted during the heat treatment process such that the one-piece part is also difficult to machine in post operations due to non-symmetric centre of gravity.
Another drawback of the integral design is low rigidity under high pumping pressures. Due to high pumping forces acting in the hydraulic chamber, the pump is being distorted upwards with respect to the mounting holes axis-plane. The expansion causes a distortion in the bottom section (below the flange) and reduces the diameter where the plunger is guided (Figure 8).
To suit different interfaces, different forgings will be required that will hugely increase the cost due to additional tooling requirements: forging dies, machining fixtures, assembly fixtures, etc.
The present invention sets out to overcome or ameliorate at least some of the problems associated with the one-piece part. In particular, the present invention removes the complexity by separating the mounting flange and the low pressure fuel connections from the forged pump housing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A high pressure pump assembly (HP pump) for a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine comprises a high pressure unit (HP unit) extending along a main axis AA. The HP unit comprises a foot portion adapted to cooperate with a rotating cam to engage a pumping plunger in a reciprocal axial displacement and a pumping head having housing. The housing is provided with a compression chamber wherein, in use, fuel enters at low pressure via an intermediate inlet conduit, then is pressurized by the pumping plunger, then exits at high pressure via an HP outlet. Advantageously the high pressure pump further comprises a low pressure unit (LP unit) having a connecting member adapted to fixedly receive a valve, a general pump inlet for receiving LP fuel from a LP tank, the connecting member being further adapted to cooperate in a complementary engagement with the HP unit, said engagement being angularly indexed. Moreover the LP unit and the HP unit are fixedly assembled to each other via the complementary engagement of the pumping head in the connecting member. Furthermore the connecting member and the pumping head cooperate to define a LP chamber for receiving, in use, LP fuel from the general pump inlet and for delivering said LP fuel to the HP unit via the internal inlet conduit. Besides the connecting member is provided with a sealing plug arranged on the top of the connecting member, said sealing plug closing the LP chamber. In addition in the connecting member, the LP chamber extends along the main axis (AA) from a lower opening adapted to sealingly receive the HP unit to an upper opening arranged to receive the sealing plug.
Moreover the connecting member may be further provided with fixation means adapted to fix the HP pump assembly onto the internal combustion engine. Additionally the fixing means are through holes arranged symmetrically and parallel to the main axis AA, said holes being adapted to receive fixing bolts. Further the fixing means may be two through holes diametrically opposed about the main axis. Moreover the connecting member may be made of stainless steel, aluminum or composite material. The HP pump further comprises indexing means adapted to angularly position the LP unit relative to the HP unit. In addition the indexing means comprise at least one pin partially protruding out of the connecting member and engaging an opening of the pumping head. Besides the pin is arranged in a through hole provided in the connecting member and the opening is a slot provided in the pumping head. In addition the slot arranged in a plan transversal to the main axis and is beveled its radial depth, enlarging itself from a flush with the pumping head face to a maximum value of few millimetres.
Further the pin is a slotted pin adapted press fitted in the through hole so that it can be moved only when pushed with substantial force.
Additionally a method for assembling a high pressure assembly comprises the following steps: a) providing the HP unit;
b) providing the LP unit which is the connecting member adapted to fixedly receive a valve, a general pump inlet for receiving LP fuel from a LP tank, the connecting member being further adapted to cooperate in a complementary engagement with the HP unit c) arranging in a complementary engagement the pumping head on the connecting member. Furthermore the assembly comprises the step of:
d) positioning angularly the LP unit relative to the HP unit by engaging the pin in the through hole provided in the connecting member and pushing said pin until it protrudes in the beveled slot provided in the pumping head. In addition the step d) is finished when the pin abuts against the end of the beveled slot. Moreover a method for disassembling an assembly comprises the following steps:
e) rotating the connecting member about the main axis in a direction so that the beveled slot pushes the pin back completely inside the through hole,
f) axially pulling apart the connecting member and the pumping head.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
In reference to Figure 1 , a high pressure fuel pump 10 is shown for use in a fuel injection system in delivering fuel under pressure. For the purpose of clarity and conciseness of the description, several acronyms will be used for the rest of the description such as HP for high pressure, LP for low pressure. Moreover for the same reasons of clarity and conciseness, a direction from top to bottom in the direction of the figures, along the main axis AA, will be used without any limitation as to the intended scope of protection, particularly with regard to different embodiments of the high pressure fuel pump. Words such as "upper, lower, up, down, top, bottom, below, above, vertical, up, down..." will be used without limitative intention.
In reference to figure 3, HP fuel pump 10, extended along a main axis AA, comprises two separated units which are a LP unit 12 and a HP unit 14.
The LP unit 12 comprises a connecting member 20, a valve 28 and a general pump inlet 22. The connecting member 20 is adapted to fixedly receive the valve 28 and the general pump inlet 22 receiving low pressure fuel from a LP tank (not shown). The connecting member 20 comprises two faces, a first face 44 arranged on the top of the connecting member 20 and a second face 46 arranged on the bottom of the connecting member 20 adapted to receive sealingly the HP unit 14.
The connecting member 20 is provided with fixation means which comprise through holes 60 arranged symmetrically and parallel to the main axis AA; the holes 60 are adapted to receive fixing bolts 62. The through holes 60 comprise at least two holes diametrically opposed with respect to the main axis AA.
The HP unit 14 comprises a foot portion 16 and a pumping head
18. The pumping head 18 has a housing 26 defining a compression chamber 34. The housing 26 comprises a slot 40 on the outer radial face of the housing 26, arranged in a plan transversal to the main axis AA and is beveled its radial depth enlarging itself from flush with the outer radial face of the housing 26 to a maximum value of few millimetres. The pumping head 18 is adapted to receive a HP outlet 38.
As shown in figure 2, the foot portion 16 comprises a pumping plunger 24, which is driven in reciprocal linear movement by a drive mechanism 56. The drive mechanism 56 comprises an engine-driven cam 54, a rotating cam 32 which follows the cam 54, and a return spring 64 that keeps the rotating cam 32 in contact with the cam 54. The pumping plunger 24 is connected to the rotating cam 32 so that, as the cam 54 rotates, the plunger 24 is forced further into the housing 26 of the pumping head 18 in a pumping stroke, thereby to pressurize fuel in a compression chamber 34 of the pumping head 18, and to force the pressurized fuel from an HP outlet 38 of the HP unit 14 to the fuel rail (not shown). Upon further rotation of the cam 54, the return spring 64 serves to retract the plunger 24, in a return or filling stroke, so that the compression chamber 34 can be re-filled with low-pressure fuel from the storage tank (not shown).
As shown in figures 5, 6 and 7, the connecting member 20 and the pumping head 18 cooperate to define a LP chamber 52 for receiving in use LP fuel from the general pump inlet 22 and for delivering said LP fuel to the HP unit 14 via the internal inlet conduit 36. The LP chamber 52 is extended along the main axis AA in a conical shape with a cone end down and cut by a plain cylinder hollowed in the center to receive a spring 74. The LP chamber 52 provides a sealing plug on an upper face 44 of the LP chamber 52. The LP chamber 52 extends along the main axis AA from a first opening 48, and designated upper opening 48 in the first face 44, to a second opening 50, and designated lower opening 50, arranged in the second face 46. The sealing plug 66 closes the upper opening 48, and the head 68 of the pumping head 18 arranged on the lower face 46 of the connecting member 20 closes the lower opening 50 of the LP chamber 52.
In order to assemble the HP fuel pump 10, the LP unit 12 and the HP unit 14 are first assembled separately as described in Figure 3 and 10. The LP unit 12 is assembled by screwing the valve 28 in the connecting member 20, pressing or screwing a LP fuel connector (not shown) into the general pump inlet 22 of the LP unit 12.
HP unit 14 is made by the assembly of the pumping head and the foot portion. The pumping head 18 is assembled by pressing or screwing a HP fuel connection (not shown) on the HP outlet 38.
In order to assemble the HP fuel pump 10, the LP unit 12 is aligned with the second face 46 of the connecting member 20 towards the pumping head 18 of the HP unit 14. The pumping head 18 of the HP unit 14 is complementary engaged in the second opening 50 of the connecting member 20. The LP unit 12 and the HP unit 14 are in use fixedly assembled to each other and the engagement of the LP unit 12 to the HP unit 14 is positioned angularly. In order to position angularly the LP unit 12 relative to the HP unit 14, a pin 42 is engaged in a through hole 58 provided in the connecting member 20 and the pin 42 is pushed until it partially protrudes into a beveled slot 40 provided in the pumping head 18 around the main axis AA.
The pin 42 is a slotted pin adapted to be press fitted in the through hole 58 so that it can be moved only when pushed with substantial force.
The LP unit 12 is screwed on the HP unit 14 in the direction of clockwise around the main axis AA. This step is ended up when the pin 42 abuts against the end of the beveled slot 40. The HP fuel pump 10 is assembled. In order to assemble the HP pump 10, the method for assembling is defined in the following steps:
- providing the HP unit 14 which is the assembly of the HP unit 14 comprising the foot part 16 and the pumping head 18.
- providing the LP unit 12 which is the connecting member 20 adapted to fixedly receive a valve 28, the general pump inlet 22 for receiving LP fuel from a LP tank.
- arranging in a complementary engagement the pumping head 18 on the connecting member 20 of the LP unit 12.
- positioning angularly the LP unit 12 relative to the HP unit 14 by engaging the pin 42 in the through hole 58 provided in the connecting member 20 and pushing the pin 42 until it protrudes into the beveled slot 40 provided in the pumping head 18. The LP unit 12 is screwed on the HP unit 14 in a clockwise direction. This step is ended up when the pin 42 abuts against the end of the beveled slot 40.
In order to repair or to change the HP pump 10, a method for disassembling the HP pump 10 is facilitated and comprises the following steps:
- rotating the connecting member 20 about the main axis AA in a direction so that the beveled slot 40 pushes the pin 42 back completely inside the through hole 58,
- axially pulling apart the connecting member 20 and the pumping head 18.
The connecting member 20 is manufactured with different processes such as the forging of stainless steel or of aluminum. The connecting member 20 may be made by an injection process of composite materials. In order to fix the HP fuel pump 10 onto the internal combustion engine 76, the connecting member 20 is provided with fixations means comprising through holes 60 arranged symmetrically and parallel to the main axis AA; the holes 60 are adapted to receive fixing bolts 62. The through holes 60 comprise at least two holes diametrically opposed with respect to the main axis AA.
The LP unit 12 and the HP unit 14 are in use fixedly assembled to each other. The LP fuel coming from the fuel tank (not shown) circulates from the connecting member 20 to the HP unit 14, entering from the general pump inlet 36 and flowing to the LP chamber 52. Then LP fuel continues to the internal inlet conduit 36 of the HP unit 14 flowing to the compression chamber 34 compressed by a pumping plunger 24, and fuel at high pressure exits by an HP outlet 38 of the pumping head 18.
In use the fixing bolts 62 reduce the distortion of the compression chamber 34 due to the pumping forces, by a balance of the forces oriented upwards and downwards as shown in Figure 9.
