Description

    Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates to chilling systems that rapidly chill beverages in containers (especially a cylindrical container) such as fruit juice, milk, and water.
  • Background Art
  • Particularly, in refrigeration devices such as fridges and deep-freezers that chill food products or keep them under a certain temperature level, beverages contained in containers are chilled by placing them into a shelf of the refrigeration device. During such chilling, at first the container loses its temperature and then the beverage is gradually (i.e. layer-by-layer) chilled towards the center of the container. However, such gradual chilling towards the center may take time and if it is desired to rapidly drink a beverage, then it may be the case that it is consumed when it is still warm. Various applications are available in the prior art in order to solve said problem. One of them is disclosed in US6314751B1 . Said document discloses an apparatus for chilling a liquid in a container, which apparatus includes a compartment to accept the container; and a coolant receptacle adjoining a side portion of the compartment, for retaining a coolant, e.g. an ice/water mixture. The adjoining side portion has one aperture that allows the coolant to flow through to enter the compartment and surround the container therein. The liquid in the container is chilled by rotating the container within the coolant. However, this application cannot achieve a sufficient chilling efficiency due to the fact that only the container is rotated. In addition, since the container is located in the coolant, the user is obliged to contact with the wet container, which is uncomfortable for the user and which may also cause the container to slip and fall and thus to be damaged. Additionally, the apparatus requires a constant coolant supplement, which reduces the efficiency of the apparatus.

  • Description of the Invention
  • Beverages in containers that contain liquid such as beverages are typically chilled by being positioned in a refrigeration device. However, said chilling process takes place such that the heat layers are disintegrated towards the center of the container, which relatively takes a long period of time. Although various applications are available in the prior art in order to rapidly chill liquids in containers, said applications fail to provide sufficient efficiency and to meet user's needs. Therefore, with the present invention, there is provided a chilling system for eliminating the drawbacks of the prior art applications and for increasing chilling efficiency.
  • The chilling system (S) according to the present invention, as illustrated in Figures 1-11, for rapid chilling of beverages in containers is suitable for use in a refrigeration device (not shown) and comprises at least one main chamber (C) including at least one compartment; at least one chilling unit (B) suitable for being positioned in the said compartment and having an interior position wherein it is positioned in the said compartment and chilling process is performed and an exterior position wherein it is inserted into the beverage container; and at least one movement member (4) energized by at least one energy source. The main chamber (C) of the chilling system (S), as illustrated in Figure 3 in its disassembled state, comprises at least one outer body (A) forming said compartment and having, at least at one side thereof, at least one aperture (A1) including at least one aperture wall (A3) and for receiving the chilling unit (B) into the said compartment or removing it therefrom, and having, at least at the other side thereof (preferably opposite side of the part where the aperture (A1) is located), at least one rear cover (3) on which at least one air inlet is positioned for passage of air into the said compartment, on which body at least one air outlet (A2) is positioned for air circulation inside the compartment, wherein said rear cover (3) may either be external for purposes of easy montage, easy technical service etc. or may be integral with the outer body (A). The chilling unit (B) of the chilling system (S), as illustrated in Figure 5 in its semi-assembled state, is suitable for making rotational movement inside the compartment by means of the said movement member (4) in its interior position, and comprises at least one lower chilling member (1) which contains a coolant that is in liquid phase in the range of operation temperature (i.e. 0°C to -18°C) of the freezing compartment of the refrigeration device and which is suitable for receiving the container containing the beverage to be chilled; at least one upper chilling member (2) which is connected with the said lower chilling member (1), preferably in such a way that it is rotatable around an axis passing through one end thereof, which surrounds - preferably all around - the beverage container located in the lower chilling member (1) by being closed over the lower chilling member (1), which has a closed position wherein it is closed over the lower chilling member (1) and an opened position for receiving the beverage container into the lower chilling member (1), and which contains a coolant that is in liquid phase in the range of operation temperature (i.e. 0°C to -18°C) of the freezing compartment of the refrigeration device; and at least one locking member (8) for securing the upper chilling member (2) in its position when the upper chilling member (2) is closed over the lower chilling member (1). The lower chilling member (1) of the chilling system (S) according to the present invention, as illustrated in Figure 7, preferably comprises at least a first body (1 b) which is preferably made of plastic and which includes at least one gap (H), in which said coolant is received; at least one front wall (1c) (which may either be integral with the first body (1 b) or may be a separate piece independent from the first body (1 b) but mounted to the first body (1b)) which is preferably made of plastic and which is positioned at an end of the first body (1b) that is close to the said aperture (A1) when the chilling unit (B) is positioned in the outer body (A) (i.e. in the interior position of the chilling unit (B)), which has at least one handle (1a) thereon and which is positioned on the aperture wall (A3) in the interior position of the chilling unit (B); at least one rear wall (1 d) (which may be either be integral with the first body (1 b) or may be a separate piece independent from the first body (1 b) but mounted to the first body (1b)) which is preferably made of plastic and which is positioned at least another end of the said first body (1 b) (which is away from the said aperture (A1) when the chilling unit (B) is positioned in the outer body (A) (i.e. in the interior position of the chilling unit (B))), which is suitable for being positioned on the aperture wall (A3) in the exterior position of the chilling unit (B); at least a first heat transfer member (1g) (which may be mounted to the first body (1b) by welding or with a connecting member such as screw, nail, adhesive, or these two pieces may be produced integral) which is made of a material (i.e. a metal material such as aluminimum) with a heat conductivity of 120-390 W/mK (Watt/ meter Kelvin), which is positioned on the first body (1b) such that the coolant inside the said gap (H) does not leak therefrom (i.e. to seal the hole) and which comprises at least a first chamber (1e) that is elongated (preferably of cylindrical form) towards the gap (H) for receiving the container containing the beverage to be chilled. The upper cooling member (2) of the chilling system (S) according to the present invention, as illustrated in Figure 6, preferably comprises at least a second body (2a) which is preferably made of plastic and which includes at least one gap (H), in which said coolant is received; at least a second heat transfer member (2b) (which may be mounted to the second body (2a) by welding or with a connecting member such as screw, nail, adhesive, or these two pieces may be produced integral) which is made of a material (i.e. a metal material such as aluminimum) with a heat conductivity of 120-390 W/mK (Watt/ meter Kelvin), which is positioned on the second body (2a) such that the coolant inside the said gap (H) does not leak therefrom (i.e. to seal the hole) and which comprises at least a second chamber (2c) that is elongated (preferably of cylindrical form) towards the gap (H) such that it surrounds - preferably all around - the container when the beverage container is placed in the first chamber (1e).
  • In an illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the chilling system (S) is preferably positioned in the freezing compartment of a refrigeration device (i.e. a fridge). When it is desired to chill beverages in containers using the chilling system (S), the chilling unit (B) is removed from the compartment where it is situated (from the outer body (A)). Then, the upper chilling member (2) is moved away from the lower chilling member (1) and the first chamber (1e) is made accessible. The beverage container is positioned in the first chamber (1e) preferably in an horizontal position and then the upper chilling member (2) is moved close to the lower chilling member (1) so as to close it over the lower chilling member (1) and the upper chilling member (2) and the lower chilling member (1) are fixed by means of the locking member (8). With the second chamber (2c) provided in the upper chilling member (2), the beverage container is surrounded - preferably all around thereof - by the pieces in which the coolant is located. Afterwards, the chilling unit (B) is re-located into the compartment and connected to the movement member (4) through the rear wall (1d); and is rendered ready to rotate by positioning the front wall (1 c) in the aperture wall (A3) and connecting the rear wall (1d) to the movement member (4), so the chilling unit (B) is rotated in the main chamber (C) by means of the movement member (4). Due to the fact that the beverage container is preferably surrounded all-around, the beverage container is also rotated with the chilling unit (B) and it rapidly confers its energy to the beverage chilling members, and the chilling members in turn confer energy to the coolant. With the air inlet (3a) and the air outlet (A2) provided in the main chamber (C), cooled air in the device in which the chilling system (S) is positioned is passed through the compartment where the chilling unit (B) is situated, so that the chilling unit (B) and thus the coolant are constantly chilled. The coolant that remains in liquid phase at the temperature of the freezing chamber enables disintegration of the heat layers of the beverage without experiencing a phase change while the chilling unit (B) is being rotated. Since the coolant does not change phase, a faster chilling process may be performed and also a reliable chilling system (S) may be obtained. Due to the fact that the second heat transfer member (2b) of the upper cooling member (2) and the first heat transfer member (1g) of the lower chilling member (1) are directly and constantly in contact with the beverage container, and they are made of a material with a high heat conductivity, the beverage may be effectively chilled in a short period of time. In an exemplary use of the invention, in case the chilling system (S) is operated at 90 rpm for 2 minutes in order to chill a 330 ml beverage can, the temperature of the beverage is reduced from 32°C to 5°C.
  • In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one bearing member (A4), preferably made of metal, which is positioned on the aperture wall (A3), preferably at a lower region of the aperture wall (A3). Thus, the friction of the front wall (1c) positioned at the aperture wall (A3) in the interior position of the chilling unit (B) is reduced during the rotational movement of the chilling unit (B), so that the wear thereof may be prevented and its service life may be increased. Said bearing member (A4) may either be in the form of a spring plate or a roller or a ball, as shown in Figure 3. In this embodiment, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one ring (1f) (shown in Figure 5) preferably made of polyoxymethylene, which is preferably positioned on the front wall (1c) in such a way that it surrounds the front wall (1c) all-around. In this way, the friction and noise during the rotational movement of the chilling unit (B) is reduced, and thus the chilling system (S) is made more robust and reliable. Said ring (1f) may either be an external piece or may be integral with the front wall (1c), as shown in the drawings.
  • In another alternative embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 7, 8 and 10, the chilling system (S) preferably comprises at least one (preferably at least two) fixing hole (1j) positioned on the rear wall (1d) of the lower chilling member (1) and at least one (preferably at least two) protrusion (A6) positioned in the outer body (A) (at the region close to the aperture (A1) or at the region where the aperture (A1) is located) such that it is received in the said fixing hole (1j) in the exterior position of the chilling unit (B) in order to prevent movement (i.e. rotation) of the chilling unit (B). Thus, undesired movement of the chilling unit (B), in its exterior position, is prevented so that a reliable chilling system (S) may be obtained. In this embodiment, said protrusion (A6) preferably protrudes, to a certain extent, from the aperture (A1) to the rear cover (3) (i.e. at a length enabling that when the chilling unit (B) is completely received into the compartment, it is released from the fixing hole (1j) so as to free the chilling unit (B) to rotate) and guides the chilling unit (B) while the chilling unit (B) is received into the compartment and allows it to move, preferably slidably, in the compartment in a proper manner. In this way, the user may easily place the chilling unit (B) into the outer body (A). The chilling system (S) of this embodiment also comprises at least one rabbet (1 h) positioned at the rear wall (1d) and the said fixing hole (1j) is positioned on the rabbet (1h). Thus, in the exterior position of the chilling unit (B), the said rabbet (1 h) abuts, in the outer body (A), on the wall where the aperture (A3) is located and the chilling unit (B) is prevented from moving out of the outer body (A).
  • In another illustrative embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) preferably comprises at least one stabilizer (K) which may be attached to and detached from the outer body (A) and which is suitable for fixing on a refrigeration device where the cooling system (S) is to be positioned. In this embodiment, the stabilizer (K) is preferably in the form of a slide which is opened at one side (i.e. opened at front side) and comprises at least one (preferably at least two) channel (K1) that extends along the stabilizer and is positioned at the section which is attached to the outer body (A). Furthermore, as shown in Figure 3, Figure 4 and Figure 10, at the section of the outer body (A) where the stabilizer (K) is attached, there is at least a (preferably at least two) first extension (A5) suitable to be received in the said channel (K1) and at least a (preferably at least two) second extension (3b) which is positioned on the rear cover (3) such that it is aligned with the first extension (A5) and which is suitable to be received in the said channel (K1). If the chilling system (S) is desired to be positioned in the refrigeration device, at first the second extension (3b) provided on the rear cover (3) is received into the channel (K1) through the open section of the stabilizer (K) and then the first extension (A5) on the outer body (A) is received into the channel, and the chilling system (S) may be fixed in the refrigeration device by sliding the chilling system (S). By fixing the chilling system (S), displacement of the chilling system (S) in the device is prevented during the rotational movement of the chilling system (S), whereby a robust, long-lasting and reliable chilling system is obtained.
  • In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least two aligning members (6), at least one of which is positioned at the rear cover (3) and at least another of which is positioned at the rear wall (1 d). Thus, it is ensured that the chilling unit (B) disposed in the outer body (A) is accurately and properly positioned in the compartment. In this way, the chilling unit (B) is prevented from striking to the inner walls of the outer body (A), during the rotation thereof, and from being damaged, so a reliable chilling system (S) is obtained. In this embodiment, at least one of the said aligning members (6) is preferably a magnet whereas the other one is a metal piece attracted by the magnet or it is a further magnet. In this way, aligning is carried out in an easy, practical and inexpensive manner while the chilling unit (B) is prevented from leaping out of the aperture (A1) during the rotational movement thereof.
  • The movement member (4) of the chilling system (S) of another alternative embodiment of the invention preferably comprises at least one motor and the chilling system (S) also comprises at least one movement transfer member (5), preferably in the form of a gear, which is positioned at that side of the rear cover (3) that faces to the compartment, which is associated with a rotor of the motor, which transfers rotational movement of the rotor to the chilling unit (B) to allow it to rotate by means of the motor, and at least one movement hole (1 m) (shown in Figure 8 and Figure 10) which is located at that side of the rear wall (1 d) that faces the rear cover (3) when the chilling unit (B) is positioned in the outer body (A), which is suitable for receiving the movement transfer member (5), which has a form corresponding to the movement transfer member (5) (i.e. when the movement transfer member (5) is in the form of a gear, it has respective holes for receiving the teeth of the gear). Thanks to this embodiment, the chilling unit (B) is supported more robustly and it is also rotated more effectively. The motor of the movement member (4) also has preferably a stepped structure, and it gradually changes the rotational speed at the start and end of the rotational movement, so that the rotational movement is performed more reliably. In this embodiment, the chilling system (S) also comprises said aligning members (6), and one of the aligning members (6) is positioned in the movement hole (1 m) whereas the other one is positioned on the movement transfer member (5) in a manner coincident with each other.
  • In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one position sensor (7) which is preferably positioned on the rear cover (3), which senses the position of the chilling unit (B) and which aligns (positions) the chilling unit (B) properly based on the position sensed. In this embodiment, for example, the position of the chilling unit (B) that has failed to reach to the position where it should be located after the rotational movement is sensed and it is brought to the correct position.
  • In another illustrative embodiment of the invention, the locking member (8) of the chilling system (S) comprises at least one upper part (8b) positioned on the upper chilling member (2); at least one lower part (8a) positioned on the lower chilling member (1) and having a portion in which at least part of the upper part (8b) is received; a plurality of teeth (8c) provided on the said portion; and a plurality of teeth (8c) positioned such that the number of the teeth on the upper part (8b) is higher than those provided on the said portion and they are engaged with the teeth on the said portion at that section of the upper part (8b) that is received into the said portion, as shown in Figure 9. Thanks to said toothed structure, an adjustment may be made based on the size of the beverage container and the upper chilling member (2) is stably closed over the lower chilling member (1).
  • In another embodiment of the invention, the locking member (8) of the chilling system (S) comprises at least two magnetic members, at least one of which is positioned on the upper chilling member (2) while at least another one is positioned on the lower chilling member (1) such that they are coincident with each other when the upper chilling member (2) is closed over the lower chilling member (2) or such that they exert a force of attraction against each other, when the upper chilling member (2) and the lower chilling member (1) fail to overlap exactly based on the size of the container, so as to stabilize the position of the upper chilling member (2) and the lower chilling member (1).
  • In another illustrative embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one liquid inlet (1m) positioned on the upper chilling member (2) and/or the lower chilling member (1), preferably at those parts facing the rear cover (3). In this manner, the lower chilling member (1) and/or the upper chilling member (2) may be supplemented with coolant, when needed.
  • In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one pin (9a) that connects the upper chilling member (2) with the lower chilling member (1) so as to perform opened/closed positions, and at least one hole (9b) suitable for receiving said pin (9a). In this embodiment, the pin (9a) is positioned on the lower chilling member (1) (or the upper chilling member (2)) and the hole (9b) is positioned on the upper chilling member (2) (or the lower chilling member (1)). Said hole (9b) supports the pin (9a) and enables the upper chilling member (2) to make rotational movement about an axis passing through said pin (9a). Thus, the upper chilling member (2) may be easily brought into an opened position or a closed position.
  • In another illustrative embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises at least one energy connection member (not shown) which is suitable for being attached to an energy outlet of the refrigeration device in order to connect the movement member (4) of the system to an energy source supplying energy to the refrigeration device. Thus, the chilling unit (B) may be rotated by means of the energy source supplying energy to the refrigeration device without requiring an external energy source.
  • In another alternative embodiment of the invention, the chilling system (S) comprises an external chargeable energy source such as a battery that supplies energy to the said movement member (4). In this way, the chilling system (S) may be used at any desired location, so its efficiency is increased.
  • In the chilling system (S) according to the present invention, the temperature of beverages in containers is reduced in a short period of time by rotating the chilling unit (B) together with the beverage container, so that an effective and efficient chilling is obtained.
