Definitions
- the present invention relates to a flood defence dam structure that is capable of providing a flood defence dam that can be filled with water.
- These dams can be used in case of floods caused by heavy rain falls, increase of sea (or river) water level, for example.
- sand bags are used. These sand bags are relatively expensive and require a large amount of labour for filling and positioning the sand bags.
- box barriers that can be positioned such that a dam is provided. Such boxes are also relatively expensive, and take up a lot of storage room. In addition, such box barriers show leakage problems on an uneven ground surface.
- hoses that are filled with water to provide a dam. Such hoses are often difficult to position correctly to provide a substantially watertight dam.
- the objective for the present invention is to provide a dam structure obviating or reducing one or more of the above stated problems.
- the flood defence dam structure for providing a flood defence dam, the flood defence dam structure comprising one or more substructures, wherein each sub-structure comprising::
- a floor element having a length and a width defining the position of use of the flood defence dam
- first side extending in a lengthwise direction of the dam structure and being permanent connected with a foldable connection to the floor element
- a second side extending in a lengthwise direction of the dam and being permanent connected to the floor element or the first side, with at least one of the two sides and/or the floor element comprising a sealable edge, wherein the foldable connections between floor element, first side and second side extend in a substantial longitudinal direction of the dam;
- the dam structure according to the invention provides a floor element having a certain length and a certain width.
- the length of the structure can be chosen freely. For example, the length may vary between a length similar to a door opening and a length of up to a 1000 meters or even more.
- This floor element definition the position of use as the floor element is in contact with the ground surface.
- By defining a specific floor element the position of the dam structure can be maintained in time, even with forces acting on the dam structure.
- a substantially watertight connection between the dam structure and the ground surface is achieved.
- the dam is positioned correctly, without for example any twisting of the dam structure.
- the dam when filling the dam that is provided by the dam structure according to the invention with a liquid such as water, the dam will remain at its location and does not intend to move as would be the case with a hose that is filled with water.
- the dam structure according to the present invention is provided with a number of foldable connections.
- This connection is preferably a permanent foldable connection, such that surfaces of the dam structure can be put fully upright relative to the floor element, or can be positioned at another angle. This guarantees that the floor element remains in contact with the ground surface.
- having permanent foldable connections between sides and floor element reduces the risk of leakage when positioning the dam structure relative to the ground surface often involving sliding and rubbing of the edges over the rough ground surface. This is also relevant in case hydrostatic pressure acts on the dam structure including the longitudinal connection.
- the sides and floor element extend in a lengthwise direction of the dam structure, with at least one of the sides, and in some embodiments both, having a sealable edge.
- the dam structure comprises two sub-structures and a partition wall extending in longitudinal direction of the dam structure between the two sub-structures, wherein the sub-floor elements of the two sub-structures together define the floor element of the dam structure.
- the floor element is connected to a first side with a foldable connection, and the first side is connected to a
- the sub-structures are U-shaped with the open sides directed towards each other and the partition wall separating the two sub-structures.
- the floor element and the second/upper side of a first sub-structure are sealed against the floor element and the second/upper side of a second sub-structure, preferably with a partition wall being positioned in between, preferably involving a first hot-bonding process for sealing the first substructure to the partition wall and a second hot-bonding process for sealing the second sub- structure to the partition wall.
- the foldable connections are arranged such that the sealed connections extending in longitudinal direction of the dam structure are positioned away from the corners of the dam structure and preferably at or close to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the dam structure that is oriented in a substantial vertical direction when the dam structure is in use.
- Connecting the two sub-structures preferably provides a tubular structure, more preferably of a concave shape.
- the outer ends of the tubular structure are closed by a number of side elements.
- the side element is permanently connected to the first side with a foldable connection.
- the other edges of the side elements are preferably sealed to the (free) outer edge of the second/upper side element and floor element to define a chamber.
- the side element defines the shape of the flood defence dam that is provided with the dam structure according to the invention.
- the dam structure comprises one sub-structure, and the sides, floor element and the sealable edge(s) are provided such that the two sides of one dam structure can be connected to define a tubular structure.
- the outer ends of this tubular structure are closed by a side element.
- the side element is also connected to the floor element with a foldable connection, preferably such that the side element can be folded upright relative to the floor element.
- the other edges of the side elements are preferably sealed to the (free) outer edge of the side element to define a chamber that can be filled with a liquid.
- the side element defines the shape of the flood defence dam that is provided with the dam structure according to the invention.
- foldable connections reduces the number of required sealed connections. This reduces the risk of leakage and increases the overall robustness of the dam.
- an inlet is provided such that a liquid can be provided to this chamber.
- This inlet can be two-way.
- the inlet comprises a one-way valve, preferably with a separate outlet.
- the dam structure according to the present invention provides a flexible means for providing a flood defence dam.
- the dam structure can be made on specification, depending on its intended use. Furthermore, by having a floor element, positioning the dam is relatively easy. In use this provides the dam with a defined position, also when filling the dam with a liquid.
- the floor element provides a substantially watertight seal.
- the flood defence dam structure and the dam resulting from such structure can be stored relatively easy by folding or rolling the dam structure or dam.
- the dam structure according to the present invention can be manufactured relatively cost effective to provide a cost effective flood defence dam.
- a separate outlet is provided to the dam, enabling removal of the liquid when storing the flood defence dam.
- the dam shape is a concave shape.
- the floor element is substantially flat, and, in use, the side edges define a 180° arc, thereby defining a tubular structure.
- such tubular structure has the shape of a semicircle, or half a circle or ellipse. This structure provides a thorough basis for the defence dam capable of handling different forces and pressures acting on the dam during use.
- the sides of the dam structure have a similar width, such that after sealing the sealable edge(s) define a seal at or close to the upper surface of the dam after sealing.
- the floor element and the first and second sides are arranged such that after sealing the seals that extend in longitudinal direction of the dam are at or close to the substantial vertical plane of symmetry seen in longitudinal direction when the dam structure is in use.
- the vertical plane of symmetry is the partition wall that is positioned between the two sub-structures.
- the structure is made of a flexible material.
- the connection between the defence dam and the surface on which it is positioned is being improved, thereby achieving an improved watertight seal.
- the floor element can adapt to the location where it is positioned, for example on an even surface.
- Such flexible material may involve PVC or TPE, for example. It will be understood that other flexible materials could also be applied.
- a material thickness in the range of 0.95-3 mm provides a strong and relatively low-weight dam structure.
- the material can be provided in different colours. For example, the colour can be chosen to distinguish the dam structure from its surroundings and/or to provide an indication of where to position the dam structure and/or what is the specific application or length of the dam structure.
- the material is Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM).
- EPDM Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer
- the EPDM material is sufficiently flexible to provide a good connection with the surface of the location where the defence dam is positioned.
- the EPDM material can be provided as reinforced EPDM, for example with polyester filaments to provide sufficient tensile strength while maintaining a minimal thickness.
- the material is flexible such that it can be stored effectively.
- two dam structures can be placed with their side elements against each other to increase the length of the flood defence dam.
- the connection between the side elements made from the flexible material according the presently preferred embodiment of the invention provides a substantially watertight seal. This improves the overall flexibility of the defence dam structure according to the present invention.
- the EPDM material is relatively easy to repair, is not very sensitive for UV, and requires only low maintenance.
- a dam structure of EPDM can be used under a broad range of circumstances, including a flood.
- Alternative applications may include (temporary) storage of industrial products such as acids, alkalines and ketones.
- EPDM can withstand a range of weather conditions such that the range of operation for the dam structure is broadened.
- the flood defence dam structure further comprises a separation wall that is oriented substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the floor element. This provides additional stability to the dam.
- the structure further comprises a separation wall that is oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the floor element in a substantially vertical direction.
- Providing the separation/partition wall in a substantial vertical direction results, in use, in substantially vertical forces acting on the separation wall.
- the separation wall is connected to the dam parts with some overlap to distribute forces more evenly over the dam.
- (reinforced) EPDM material is used that enables performing a hot bonding process without significant loss of the tensile strength of the material.
- the connection is preferably achieved by connecting edges of the separation wall with edges of both sides of the dam structure. This results in a double overlapping connection with a thickness of approximately three times the material thickness that is capable of dealing with the tensile forces.
- This configuration of a presently preferred embodiment is such that forces mainly relate to tensile forces and shear forces are reduced.
- the dam structure further comprises an upper part and a lower part, wherein in use the upper parts is provided directly above the lower part.
- the lower and upper parts are of a unitary structure. This provides an effective dam structure and dam, and enables an efficient operation.
- the present invention also relates to a flood defence dam comprising at least one flood defence dam structure as described above, wherein the sides are sealed against each other to form a tubular structure and the outer ends of the sides are sealed against the side elements.
- the flood defence dam provides the same advantages and effects as described for the flood defence dam structure.
- the flood defence dam according to the invention provides a flexible means for preventing damage to a housing, dike or other structure due to a flood.
- the flood defence dam can be applied cost effective, is easy to store and can be used efficiently without requiring a large amount of labour or having the risk of not providing a sufficient watertight dam.
- the flood defence dam can be provided of different elements.
- the length of the dam can be adapted in use by having a side element of a first dam structure abutting a side element of a second dam structure, such that the first and second dam structures are connected with a substantially watertight seal.
- This watertight seal is preferably achieved by providing a dam structure of a flexible material, such as EPDM.
- the flood defence dam according to the invention comprises a flap extending from at least one side of the dam over a ground surface. This provides additional stability to the dam structure.
- the present invention further also relates to a method for providing a flood defence dam, the method comprising the steps of:
- the method provides the same effects and advantages as described for the flood defence dam structure and/or flood defence dam.
