Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a bricklaying jig or aid, in particular for use in laying bricks on lintels, and especially steel lintels.
  • the present inventor has recognized that the laying of bricks on steel lintels, such as available from Catnic (RTM) (Caerphilly, UK), can be difficult, especially in maintaining the bricks in alignment on a mortar bed.
  • RTM Catnic
  • the present inventor has developed an improved and/or simplified bricklaying jig or aid, in particular for use in laying bricks on lintels, and especially steel lintels.
  • the present invention provides a bricklaying jig for use in laying bricks on a lintel having a support member for supporting one or more courses of bricks, the jig comprising a first, mounting section by which the jig is mounted to a lintel and a second, support section by which a guide is supported on the jig so as to retain one or more courses of facing bricks in alignment to the lintel, wherein the mounting section includes a projection which is configured to locate between side faces of two adjacent bricks.
  • the present invention provides a bricklaying jig for use in laying bricks on a lintel having a support member for supporting one or more courses of bricks, the jig comprising a first, mounting section by which the jig is mounted to a lintel and a second, support section by which a guide is supported on the jig so as to retain one or more courses of facing bricks in alignment to the lintel.
  • the support member is a bottom plate.
  • the lintel is a steel lintel.
  • the mounting section includes a slot or recess which receives the support member of the lintel.
  • the slot is an elongate slot which is inclined upwardly from the free edge thereof.
  • the mounting section includes a projection which is configured to locate between side faces of two adjacent bricks.
  • the jig is removable and the projection has a size corresponding to a weep vent, such that, on removal of the jig, an aperture remains which allows for the insertion of the weep vent.
  • the projection is separable from a remaining body of the jig.
  • the projection includes weep holes, such that the projection acts as a weep vent.
  • the projection is cut or broken away from the remaining body of the jig.
  • the projection is formed as a part separate to the remaining body of the jig, such that the remaining body of the jig can be separated from the projection following use of the jig.
  • the support section includes a first, support surface on which the guide is supported vertically, and a second, alignment surface against which the guide is supported horizontally so as to align the guide horizontally in relation to the lintel.
  • the jig further comprises a fixing for maintaining the jig in a desired position on the lintel.
  • the fixing is a threaded fixing which when rotated engages a surface of the lintel.
  • the fixing is a biasing element which biases against a surface of the lintel.
  • the jig is formed as a sheet or plate.
  • the jig is fabricated from a plastics material.
  • the bricks are clay building bricks.
  • the bricks are blocks, such as concrete or lightweight blocks.
  • the present invention also extends to a kit comprising a plurality of the above-described jigs.
  • the kit comprises a guide.
  • the bricklaying jig 3 comprises a first, mounting section 5 by which the jig 3 is mounted to a lintel 7, in this embodiment a steel lintel, such as supplied by Catnic (Caerphilly, UK), and a second, support section 11 by which a guide 41 is supported to the jig 3 in order to retain one or more courses of facing bricks in alignment in relation to the lintel 7, as will be described in more detail hereinbelow.
  • the bricks can be clay building bricks or larger blocks, such as concrete or lightweight blocks.
  • the jig 3 is formed as a sheet or plate, here fabricated from a plastics material.
  • the mounting section 5 includes a slot or recess 15 which receives a bottom plate 17 of the lintel 7.
  • the slot 15 is an elongate slot which is inclined upwardly from the free edge thereof.
  • the mounting section 5 includes a projection 21, here in the form of a plate, which is configured to rest on an upper surface of the bottom plate 17 of the lintel 7, between the side faces of two adjacent bricks.
  • the projection 21 has a size corresponding to a weep vent, here having a width of 10 mm, such that, on removal of the jig 3, an aperture is provided which allows for the insertion of a weep vent.
  • the support section 11 includes a first, support surface 23 on which the guide 41 is supported vertically, and a second, alignment surface 25 against which the guide 41 is supported horizontally in order to align the guide 41 horizontally in relation to the lintel 7, and thereby provide for alignment of the bricks as laid on the lintel 7.
  • Figure 2 illustrates use of a plurality of the bricklaying jigs 3a-c in a bricklaying operation, here in laying a soldier course of bricks on the lintel 7.
  • the jigs 3a-c are fixed in spaced relation along a length of the lintel 7, in this embodiment by sliding the slots 15 of the mounting sections 5 onto the bottom plate 17 of the lintel 7.
  • the jigs 3a-c are arranged such that the projections 21 of the mounting sections 5 are located at the desired positions for the weep vents.
  • a guide 41 is located on the support surfaces 23 of the support sections 11, and the jigs 3a-c adjusted, as necessary, such that the guide 41 is aligned horizontally in relation to the lintel 7.
  • the guide 41 here a spirit level, is shorter than the length of the lintel 7 over which bricks are to be laid, and the guide 41 is first supported on two adjacent jigs 3a, b in order to allow the laying of bricks between those jigs 3a, b, and following laying of bricks between those jigs 3a, b, the guide 41 is moved to be supported on the next adjacent pair of jigs 3b, c, and bricks are laid between those jigs 3b, c.
  • a sufficient number of jigs 3a-c are located on the lintel 7 to allow for the laying of bricks without removal of any of the jigs 3a-c.
  • the first, endmost jig 3a could be removed and located further along the lintel 7 to support the guide 41.
  • the guide 41 could extend along the entire length of the lintel 7 and only first and second jigs 3 fitted to the lintel 7 to support the guide 41.
  • the jigs 3a-c are removed, so as to allow for re-use, and weep vents are inserted into the apertures which remain, in correspondence to the projections 21 of the jigs 3a-c.
  • the jig 3 could include a fixing for maintaining the jig 3 in a desired position on the lintel 7.
  • the fixing could be a threaded fixing which when rotated engages a surface of the lintel 7.
  • the fixing could be a biasing element which biases against a surface of the lintel 7.
  • the projection 21 could be separable from the remaining body of the jig 3.
  • the remaining projection 21 could include weep holes, such that the projection 21 acts as a weep vent.
  • the projection 21 could be cut or broken away along a fracture line.
  • the projection 21 could be formed as a part separate to the body of the jig 3, such that the body of the jig 3 can be separated from the projection 21, for example, by sliding.
