  • The present invention relates to a window comprising a frame and a sash, each having a top member, a bottom member and two side members, the frame and sash defining a respective frame plane and sash plane, a pane extending in the sash plane, said sash plane being defined as coinciding substantially with the outer side of the pane, said sash being pivotally connected to the frame substantially at a centre axis by means of a set of pivot hinges to bring the sash from a closed position, in which the sash plane is substantially parallel to the frame plane, to an open position, in which the sash plane forms an angle with the frame plane, and a screening arrangement including a screening device with a top element mounted at the top member of the frame, two side rails, a screening body defining a screening plane extending at a predefined distance in parallel with the sash plane in the closed position of the window, and being adapted to be brought from a non-screening to a screening position from the top element, said screening body including an end element.
  • Such screening arrangements including screening devices in the form of roller shutters and external blinds such as blackout awning blinds are traditionally used for screening an aperture of a building structure, most often the light-admitting aperture of windows, but also of doors and other building openings. The roller shutters, or other kinds of blinds, are either installed to extend substantially vertically in a building fagade, as in an obliquely positioned roof window installed in an inclined roof surface, or as a horizontally extending cover for openings in a horizontal surface. When not screening the aperture, the screening body is normally rolled up on a roller bar accommodated in the top element of the roller shutter.
  • Roller shutters and other blackout blinds are often chosen in order to obtain a very high degree of seclusion. This entails, i.a., that as small amount as possible of light from the outside should be allowed to enter the building in the closed position of the screening device. Thus, great care is taken in securing that no light, or a very limited amount of light, is admitted at the connection between the individual slats, and at the guidance in the side rails. However, in particular at the bottom or free end of the screening body, it can be a challenge to obtain sufficient light-proofing. In examples of prior art shutters, such as Applicant's own WO 2009/143842 A1 and WO 2011/150922 , this has been obtained in that the last portion of the side rails is formed with a curved section forcing the end element downwards with respect to the screening plane. However, this may not always be possible.
  • In FR 2 717 854 A1 , a window of the kind mentioned in the introduction is shown and described. Further examples of windows comprising screening arrangements are described in DE 20 2007 011166 U1 , WO 2008/043358 A1 and DE 10 2005 037755 A1 . Although all of these examples in the prior art provide well-functioning solutions, there is still room for improvement.
  • With this background, it is an object of the present invention to provide a window with a screening arrangement, in which the light-proofing properties are enhanced, however while maintaining flexibility regarding the mounting of the roller shutter on the window.
  • This and further objects are achieved by a window of the kind mentioned in the introduction, which is furthermore characterized in that the screening arrangement includes a screen element mounted at the bottom member of the sash, said screen element extending between the side rails, and that the screen element has such a height in a direction perpendicular to the sash plane that it at least corresponds to or exceeds said distance.
  • By mounting a screen element on the bottom member of the sash of the window, a simple and reliable solution has been found, without the need for special precautions at the side rails.
  • Further details are described, and further advantages stated, in the description of particular embodiments of the invention.

  • Referring first to Figs 1 to 3, which show a first embodiment of a window, it is seen that the window comprises a screening arrangement including a screening device, which in the embodiment shown is a roller shutter generally designated 1. The roller shutter 1 has a top element 2 and two side rails 3 and 4 extending at right angles to the top element 2. A screening body 5 includes, in the embodiment shown, a plurality of slats 51. A longitudinal direction of the window is defined as extending perpendicular to and through the frame and sash top members and the frame and sash bottom members. Thus, the side rails extend in the longitudinal direction.
  • The roller shutter 1 is mounted on a window, for instance a roof window adapted for installation in an inclined roof. The window comprises in a manner known per se a window frame 6 and a window sash 7 encasing a pane 70. The window sash 7 is openable relative to the window frame 6, viz. hinge connected to the window frame 6 by means of a set of pivot hinges 65 positioned close to a centre axis of the window, i.e. at substantially a position approximately halfway between the top and bottom members of the sash and the frame, to allow the window sash 7 to pivot relative to the window frame 6. This makes it possible to operate the sash to a position where the bottom member of the sash is located at or near the frame top member and hence the top element of the screening device.
  • The aperture to be screened is defined by the area limited by the top element 2, the side rails 3, 4, and the bottom of the window. This aperture thus corresponds in substance to the pane 70. In order to attain the desired screening, the screening body 5 is adapted to be moved from a non-screening position to a screening position, in which it covers the pane and other parts of the window to a larger or lesser degree. Each slat 51 extends in a longitudinal direction between two end edges and has first and second side edges parallel to the longitudinal direction, i.e. in parallel with the top element 2. At the end of the screening body, an end or bottom element is provided in the form of an end slat 50, which may have particular properties as will be described in some detail below.
  • In the embodiment shown, the screening body 5 is adapted to be wound up in and rolled out from the top element 2 in a direction perpendicular to said longitudinal direction to a desired screening position. Other manners of bringing the screening body from a non-screening to a screening position and vice versa are of course conceivable, including un-stacking and stacking, unfolding and folding the screening body, such as a screening body with a plurality of slats connected along the longitudinal direction or at their end portions, or as in a blackout awning blind, in which the screening body in the form of a cloth connected to an end element is rolled up on a roller bar, possibly via one or more guidance bars.
  • In the position shown in Fig. 1, the screening body 5 is entirely accommodated in the top element 2 of the roller shutter 1. In Fig. 3, the screening body 5 is moved out of the top element to screen the window. The window sash 7 is shown in an open position for reasons of clarity; normally, the screening device will most often be used as a blackout screening device in the closed position of the window, although use also in the open position may also be desirable.
  • The top element 2 is positioned at the top of the window and comprises in the embodiment shown a top cover 21 and two outer end covers, of which the left-hand end cover 22 is visible in Fig. 1. As will be described in further detail below, the top cover 21 and outer end covers 22 serve to hide and protect the inner parts of the roller shutter 1. Terms such as "left-hand" and "right-hand" refer to the orientation shown in for instance Fig. 1 and are utilized for reasons of convenience only.
  • The side rails 3, 4 each has a structure extending substantially throughout the height of the window and are rigidly connected to the top element 2. At the opposite end, each side rail 3, 4 has a bottom cover 30, 40 at the bottom of the window. In the embodiment shown, in which the screening device is a roller shutter, the side rails 3, 4 are connected to each other at the bottom part of the roller shutter 1, namely by a cross bar 35 connected to the bottom cover 40 of side rail 4 and its counterpart bottom cover 30 of side rail 3. The cross bar 35 may for instance be connected to each bottom cover 30, 40 by means of protrusions extending from the bottom covers 30, 40 into a track of the cross bar 35, which track extends in the longitudinal direction of the cross bar 35. The cross bar 35 provides a rectangular shape of the screening device and contributes to the strength as well as resistance of the screening device. In Fig. 2, mounting rails 33, 43 are furthermore shown, which in the embodiment shown provide the connection of the screening device to the window frame 6. The screening arrangement is fastened to the window sash in a manner to be described in further detail below.
  • In the embodiment shown, operation of the screening device is carried out by bringing a first set of engagement means connected to the roller shutter 1 into engagement with a second set of engagement means 9 provided on the bottom member 71 of the sash. Operation of the roller shutter 1 to be carried out by pivoting the sash to enable engagement of the second set of engagement means 9 with the first set of engagement means is described in detail in Applicant's co-pending European application 13173331.3 , not yet published. Other engagement means providing the functionality aimed at are conceivable as well to provide the desired combination of automatic and manual engagement and disengagement, where engagement relates to coupling a first engagement means together with a second engagement means, and disengagement relates to decoupling first engagement means and second engagement means.
  • In the embodiment shown, the second set of engagement means 9 comprises a screen element 92, which is also connected to the window sash 7, at the cross bar 35, which will also be described in further detail below.
  • The screening device of the screening arrangement in the form of the roller shutter in the window according to the invention has been described as being intended to be installed on the window frame of an openable roof window for installation in an inclined roof. However, the invention is applicable also with windows mounted in other positions, for instance on a window for installation in a building façade.
  • The sash 7 and frame 6 of the window according to the invention may for example be made of wooden members or members made of cast or extruded polyurethane (PUR) encasing a core of wood or wood-like material. Some variations to the fastening of the screening arrangement to the window depending on the material are conceivable.
  • Referring now in particular to Figs 4 to 11, details of the bottom parts of the window comprising a screening arrangement in one embodiment will be described. Only details relevant to the present invention will be described. Further details are described in Applicant's international application WO 2013/050040 .
  • In the sash 7 encasing the pane 70, a number of protective elements are provided, including side sash coverings 731, 741 and a bottom sash covering 1319, cf. in particular Fig. 5. Further protective elements are provided but will not be referred to.
  • The window comprises, at the bottom sash member 71, elements for keeping the pane 70 in place. In the embodiment shown, two pane holding devices 1300 are provided for holding the pane 70. Depending on the size of the window it may be sufficient with one pane holding device, or more than two may be needed. The number needed may also depend on the shape, strength and mode of attachment of the pane holding devices.
  • Each pane holding device 1300 is shaped in such a way that it has a face adapted for abutment with the pane 70. The pane holding device 1300 may for instance be substantially box-shaped or substantially wedge-shaped as in the drawing, depending on the space available underneath the bottom sash covering 1319, which is at least partly determined by the desired external shape of the window. The pane holding device may possibly be arranged with substantially its entire exterior surface abutting the bottom sash covering, which will provide a good support for the bottom sash covering, but to optimise the insulating properties an air gap is preferably provided between them. In the embodiment shown, an insulating element 1303 is present to improve the insulating properties further.
  • In the embodiment shown, each pane holding device 1300 is provided with a set of apertures including a first aperture 1391 and a second aperture 1392 positioned on a line parallel to the longitudinal direction of the window. The bottom sash covering 1319 is pre-formed with apertures 1381 a and 1381b at positions corresponding to the first aperture 1391 of the set of apertures of the pane holding device 1300. The bottom sash covering 1319 is attached directly to the pane holding devices 1300, using screws 1399a, 1399b penetrating into the material of the respective pane holding device. The pane holding devices 1300 are preferably made of a hard plastic and each pane holding device 1300 is preferably provided with holes for accommodating screws for attachment to the window sash structure (none of these elements being shown).
  • The bottom sash covering 1319 here comprises a first section 1320, a second section 1321 and a third section 1322. The first section 1320 is adapted for abutment with the pane 70 and is provided with the apertures 1381 a and 1381b serving as reception means for screws 1399a and 1399b for penetrating into the underlying pane holding devices 1300. The second section 1321 extends substantially in extension of and in parallel with the first section 1320 and is adapted for covering the remaining portion of the underlying pane holding device or devices 1300, insulating element 1303, bottom sash gasket 1310 and bottom sash member. The third section 1322 extends from and substantially perpendicular to the second section 1321 and is adapted for shielding a surface of the bottom sash member facing away from the pane 70 in the longitudinal direction of the window. Between the second and third sections 1321 and 1322, a hook section 1323 is formed such that a ledge-like structure is obtained in that the second section 1321 protrudes beyond the third section 1322 at the hook section 1323. At the opposite end of the third section 1322, the material of the bottom sash covering 1319 is folded upon itself to form a hair-pin end 1324.
  • In order to connect the screening device 1 of the screening arrangement to the window, a mounting means is provided with the screening arrangement.
  • In the embodiment shown in Figs 1 to 11, the screen element 92 of the screening arrangement constitutes a part of the mounting means in itself. To that end the screen element 92 has a bottom section 921 and an upstanding wall section 922, which in the embodiment shown is inclined, and the bottom section 921 is provided with apertures corresponding to the second aperture of the set of apertures of each pane holding device 1300 as will be described in further detail below. In order to facilitate mounting, the upstanding wall section 922 is provided with corresponding apertures allowing the introduction of screws and appropriate tools. Plug means 930 are introduced once the mounting is finished for closing the apertures in the upstanding wall section.
  • In general, the bottom sash covering 1319 thus includes hook section 1323. In the embodiment shown, the mounting means include screen element 92 and mounting fitting 94 including an engagement portion 941 which is able to be brought into engagement with and thus corresponds to the hook section 1323 of the bottom sash covering and furthermore a fixing portion.
  • In order to attach the screening device 1 to the sash, the mounting means including screen element 92 and mounting fitting 94 is positioned on top of the bottom sash covering 1319 with the engagement portion 941 in engagement with the hook section 1323, and is subsequently fixed to the sash bottom member 71 by means of a number of fastening means, typically screws, exclusively into the pane holding device 1300 in the embodiment shown. Other configurations of the fastening means are conceivable.
  • In the embodiment shown, the mounting means of the screening arrangement comprises two mounting fittings 94 including a respective engagement portion 941, and the screen element 92 extends between the side rails 3, 4 and including the above-mentioned fixing portion, in that the screen element 92 has a bottom section 921 constituting the fixing portion. Furthermore, the screen element 92 has an upstanding wall section 922, and the bottom section 921 is provided with apertures opposite a respective pane holding device 1300.
  • In the embodiment shown, the set of apertures of the pane holding device is positioned on a line parallel to a longitudinal direction of the window.
  • The fixing portion of the mounting means of the screening arrangement may be adapted to cooperate with at least one of the first and second apertures 1391, 1392 of the pane holding device(s) 1300, but the fixing portion of the mounting means of the screening arrangement may also be adapted to cooperate with the pane holding device(s) 1300 outside the first and second apertures 1391, 1392, in which case the fastening means such as screws are screwed directly into the material of the pane holding device in question.
  • Regarding the movable connection between the mounting means on one hand and the side rails on the other, it is foreseen that the mounting fitting 94 comprises an arm section 942 adapted to be connected to the side rails 3, 4 of the screening arrangement. This is particularly advantageous if each side rail 3, 4 comprises a track open in the mutually facing sides and preferably comprises set of guide profiles adapted to receive a respective mounting fitting 94, which may for instance be rotatably connected to a shaft portion 943 parallel to the bottom member of the sash and frame, the shaft portion being preferably guided between the guide profiles.
  • In the alternative embodiment shown in Figs 12 to 14, the mounting fitting 192 is as before connected by means of the engagement portion with the hook section, but with two fastening means introduced into one and the same pane holding device, preferably by the two apertures lying on substantially on the same line. This makes it possible to utilise the relevant aperture 1381a, 1381b already formed in the bottom sash covering 1319.
  • As a further alternative shown in Figs 15 and 16, a set of supplemental fittings 293 is provided to be connected to the screen element 292, by its engagement portion 2941 on plate 294 about the bottom sash covering 1319, preferably in different height positions. The different height positions are rendered necessary by the fact that windows are provided with different thicknesses of the pane, for instance two-glass or three-glass panes. The supplemental fittings 293 may in principle be connected to the sash and or to the screen element in any suitable manner. It is particularly advantageous in case the supplemental fittings match apertures in the bottom sash covering 1319 and/or the pane holding device 1300 and/or the sash bottom member 71 itself.
  • Referring now to the embodiment of Fig. 17, it is shown how it is ensured that the roller shutter is substantially light-proof, that is, the amount of light entering the building from the outside is brought to a minimum by special precautions:
  • The frame and the sash define a respective frame plane and sash plane, the pane 70 extending in the sash plane. In this embodiment, the sash plane is defined as substantially coinciding with the outer side of the pane 70. The sash 6 is pivotally connected to the frame substantially at a centre axis by means of a set of pivot hinges to bring the sash from a closed position, in which the sash plane is substantially parallel to the frame plane, to an open position, in which the sash plane forms an angle with the frame plane.
  • As described in the above, the screening arrangement includes a screening device 1 of a suitable kind, with a top element mounted at the top member of the frame, two side rails and a screening body 5 defining a screening plane extending at a predefined distance hsb in parallel with the sash plane in the closed position of the window, and being adapted to be brought from a non-screening to a screening position from the top element. The screening body 5 includes a number of slats or a screening cloth or the like, and an end element 50. At least one mounting fitting is provided for connecting the side rails 3, 4 of the screening device to the sash bottom member 71.
  • The screen element 92 has such a height hse in a direction perpendicular to the sash plane that it at least corresponds to or exceeds a distance hsb from the sash plane to an underside of the screening body. The position of the sash plane may have a number of definitions; here, the sash plane is defined as coinciding substantially with the outer side of the pane 70 as represented by the line a. The underside of the screening body is here defined as the portion of the end slat 50 being closest to the pane 70. Thus, as the end slat 50 is in the embodiment shown provided with a sealing 501, the distance hsb thus extends from line a to the lower-most edge of sealing 501.
  • The term "plane" as used in the present context should be interpreted as including slight variations from a general extension. For instance, the screening body extending in a general plane defined, i.a., by the side rails 3, 4 may provide a screening plane comprising parts of a curved or arched configuration, typically near the bottom or the top, without deviating from the present invention.
  • In the embodiment shown, the screen element 92 is provided as part of mounting means of the screening arrangement as described in the above, in which the mounting means comprises two mounting fittings, and the screen element 92 extends between the side rails 3, 4. Other configurations are also conceivable, for instance by providing the screen element as a separate element performing the sole function of providing an abutment with the end element 50 of the screening device, when the end element 50 is in the closed position.
  • As the end element 50 and the screen element 92 both have a longitudinal extension, substantially between the side rails 3, 4, at least one line is formed through the individual points of contact between the end element 50 and the screen element 92. As one definition of an advantageous dimensioning of the screen element 92, the height hse of the screen element 92 is at least as large as or larger than a line through the points of contact between the end element 50 of the screening body and the screen element 92 when the end element 50 is in the closed position. It is also noted that the screening device and the screen element 92 do not add to the extension of the window itself to any particular extent, i.e. the outer surfaces of the side rails do not, or only slightly, add to the outer contours of the window frame side members, just as the bottom of the screening device and in particular the screen element does not add, or only adds slightly, to the outer contour of the window frame bottom member.
  • The screen element 92 may take many different forms, including an upstanding, perpendicular wall section. However, it is preferred that the screen element 92 has as in the embodiment shown a bottom section 921 and an upstanding wall section 922, of which the upstanding wall section 922 is inclined.
  • The points of contact between the end element 50 of the screening device and the screen element may be provided in a number of manners, i.a. in dependence of the kind of screening device involved. In the embodiment shown, the screening device includes a roller shutter having a screening body in the form of a number of slats, and the end element of the screening body 5 is provided as an end slat 50. The end slat 50 preferably incorporates a sealing 501, which may be flexible in order to obtain a particularly reliable abutment, as any variations in the line of points of contact are accommodated. Although not preferred, the sealing may also be provided on the screen element 92.
  • The screen element 92 may be fastened to the sash bottom member 71 in any suitable manner. In one particular embodiment, in which the window comprises at least one pane holding device 1300 and cover members including a bottom sash covering 1319, the screen element 92 is fastened to the at least one pane holding device 1300. Alternatively, the screen element 92 is fastened directly to the sash at other locations, for instance screwed directly into the material of the sash structure itself, in those cases, in which this is possible.
  • The connection with the side rails is preferably carried out by forming each mounting fitting 94 with an arm section 942 adapted to be connected to the side rails 3, 4 of the screening arrangement. To that end, each side rail 3, 4 comprises a track open in the mutually facing sides and preferably comprises set of guide profiles adapted to receive a respective mounting fitting 94. Each mounting fitting 94 is, as in the embodiment shown, rotatably connected to a shaft portion 943 parallel to the bottom member of the sash and frame, the shaft portion being preferably guided between the guide profiles.
  • A list of itemized embodiments is devised below:
    1. A. In a window comprising at least one pane holding device and cover members including a bottom sash covering, the bottom sash covering (1319) includes a hook section (1323), and mounting means (92, 94) includes an engagement portion (941) adapted to be brought into engagement with the hook section (1323) of the bottom sash covering and a fixing portion, and the mounting means (92, 94) is adapted to be positioned on top of the bottom sash covering (1319) with the engagement portion (941) in engagement with the hook section (1323), and to be fixed to the sash bottom member (71) by means of a number of fastening means adapted to exclusively cooperate with said at least one pane holding device (1300).
    2. B. A window according to embodiment A, wherein the bottom sash covering (1319) comprises a first section (1320) adapted for abutment with the pane (70) and provided with said pre-formed apertures (1381a, 1381b), a second section (1321) and a third section (1322) extending from and substantially perpendicular to the second section (1321), and wherein between the second and third sections (1321, 1322), the hook section (1323) is formed.
    3. C. A window according to embodiment A or B, wherein the screen element (92) has a bottom section and an upstanding wall section, the upstanding wall section (922) is provided with corresponding apertures allowing the introduction of screws and appropriate tools, and wherein the screening arrangement is preferably provided with plug means for closing the apertures in the upstanding wall section.
    4. D. A window according to any one of embodiments A, B or C, wherein each said at least one pane holding device (1300) is provided with a set of apertures including a first and second aperture (1391, 1392), and wherein said bottom sash covering (1319) is pre-formed with at least one aperture (1381a, 1381b) corresponding to one aperture (1391) of the at least one pane holding device (1300).
    5. E. A window according to embodiment D, wherein the set of apertures of the pane holding device is positioned on a line parallel to a longitudinal direction of the window.
    6. F. A window according to embodiment D or E, wherein the fixing portion of the mounting means of the screening arrangement is adapted to cooperate with at least one of said first and second apertures (1391, 1392) of the pane holding device(s) (1300).
    7. G. A window according to embodiment E or F, wherein the fixing portion of the mounting means of the screening arrangement is adapted to cooperate with the pane holding device(s) (1300) outside the first and second apertures (1391, 1392).
    8. H. A window according to any one of embodiments A to G, wherein a set of supplemental fittings (293) is provided to be connected to the screen element (292) and in turn to the bottom sash covering (1319), preferably in different height positions.
  • The invention should not be regarded as being limited to the described embodiments. Several modifications and combinations of the different embodiments will be apparent to the person skilled in the art.

Claims (10)

  1. A window comprising:
    a frame (6) and a sash (7), each having a top member, a bottom member (61, 71) and two side members (63, 64; 73, 74), the frame and sash defining a respective frame plane and sash plane, a pane (70) extending in the sash plane, said sash plane being defined as coinciding substantially with the outer side of the pane (70), said sash being pivotally connected to the frame substantially at a centre axis by means of a set of pivot hinges (65) to bring the sash from a closed position, in which the sash plane is substantially parallel to the frame plane, to an open position, in which the sash plane forms an angle with the frame plane, and
    a screening arrangement including a screening device (1) with a top element (2) mounted at the top member of the frame, two side rails (3, 4), a screening body (5) defining a screening plane extending at a predefined distance (hsb) in parallel with the sash plane in the closed position of the window, and being adapted to be brought from a non-screening to a screening position from the top element, said screening body (5) including an end element (50), wherein the screen element (92) extending between the side rails (3, 4), and wherein the screen element (92) has such a height (hse) in a direction perpendicular to the sash plane that it at least corresponds to or exceeds said distance (hsb), characterized in that
    the screening arrangement includes a screen element (92) mounted at the bottom member (71) of the sash (7).
  2. A window according to claim 1, wherein the screen element (92) is provided as part of mounting means of the screening arrangement, said mounting means comprising two mounting fittings (94), and wherein the screen element (92) extends between the side rails (3, 4).
  3. A window according to any one of claims 1 and 2, wherein the height (hse) of the screen element (92) is at least as large as or larger than a distance between the sash plane and a line through the points of contact between the end element (50) of the screening body and the screen element (92) when the end element (50) is in the closed position.
  4. A window according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the screen element (92) has a bottom section (921) and an upstanding wall section (922), and wherein said upstanding wall section (922) is preferably inclined.
  5. A window according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the screening device includes a roller shutter having a screening body in the form of a number of slats, and wherein the end element of the screening body (5) is provided as an end slat (50), preferably provided with a sealing (501), which is preferably flexible.
  6. A window according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the window comprises at least one pane holding device (1300) and cover members including a bottom sash covering (1319).
  7. A window according to claim 6, wherein said screen element (92) is fastened to said at least one pane holding device (1300).
  8. A window according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said screen element (92) is fastened to the interior of the window sash bottom member (71).
  9. A window according to claim 2, wherein each mounting fitting (94) comprises an arm section (942) adapted to be connected to the side rails (3, 4) of the screening arrangement.
  10. A window according to claims 2 and 9, wherein each side rail (3, 4) comprises a track open in the mutually facing sides and preferably comprises set of guide profiles adapted to receive a respective mounting fitting (94), and wherein each mounting fitting (94) is preferably rotatably connected to a shaft portion (943) parallel to the bottom member of the sash and frame, the shaft portion being preferably guided between the guide profiles.
