Definitions
- the invention relates to a dewatering screen for the production of paper with a two-stage watermark and a method for producing such a dewatering screen.
- multi-level When producing paper with watermarks, a distinction is made between two-level watermarks with a strong light-dark effect and multi-level watermarks with smooth transitions between light and dark and a detailed representation of a motif.
- multi-level is to be understood as a distinction to two-level light-dark watermarks and includes all watermarks with more than two levels of lightness and in particular also includes watermarks with continuous light-dark transitions.
- a dewatering screen has a carrier screen with a screen surface on which paper is deposited, as well as a perforated plastic watermark insert arranged in a partial area of the carrier screen.
- electrotypes metal wires or metal moldings, so-called electrotypes
- electrotypes are typically soldered onto the screen structure in order to completely close the drainage screen at these points.
- the representable motifs are limited due to the structural requirements for the structure and stability of the electrotypes.
- the invention is based on the object of creating a dewatering screen for the production of paper with a two-stage watermark that combines a high level of protection against forgery with an attractive visual appearance and great freedom of design for the designer.
- the basic height level of a motif generation area is that height level which takes up more than 60%, preferably more than 70%, particularly preferably more than 75% of the area of the motif generation area.
- the motif elements are then formed relative to the basic height level, either by elevations protruding from the base body or by depressions protruding into the base body.
- the basic height level of the positive motif generation area is advantageously at the height level of the screen surface on which Paper is deposited.
- the basic height level of the negative motif generation area is advantageously between 0.1 mm and 2 mm above the height level of the screen surface.
- the basic height level of the base body advantageously falls in a transition area from the negative motif generation area to the positive motif generation area, the transition width of which is 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less .
- the elevations and depressions preferably each have sharp edges with an edge width of 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less. Furthermore, in the case of M1) and K1), it is advantageously provided that at least one motif generation area with elevations and at least one motif generation area with depressions directly adjoin one another.
- the characteristic lateral dimension is in particular the line thickness or the diameter of the motif elements.
- the large characteristic lateral dimension is advantageously larger by at least a factor 5, in particular by a factor 8, than the small characteristic lateral dimension.
- the small characteristic lateral dimension is 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less.
- the large characteristic lateral dimension is 1.5 mm or more, preferably 2.0 mm or more, particularly preferably 2.5 mm or more.
- the motif structures with the large characteristic lateral dimension advantageously have sharp edges with a Edge width of 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less.
- the motif elements of at least one of the motif generation areas advantageously form an alphanumeric character string.
- the motif elements of at least one of the motif generation areas can form a point or line grid. It can be provided in particular that the dot or line grid is arranged inside or outside of an alphanumeric character string.
- the motif elements are preferably designed in one piece with the base body. As a result, a particularly high stability of the watermark insert can be ensured with simple production even with small dimensions and sharp edges of the motif elements.
- the motif elements designed as elevations protrude perpendicularly from the base body and the motif elements designed as depressions protrude perpendicularly into the base body.
- the watermark insert is an injection-molded insert.
- the injection-molded insert is expediently formed from a hydrophobic plastic, for example from polyoxymethylene.
- wear-reducing additives can be added to the plastic.
- the watermark insert can also be produced using the deep-drawing process or the hot stamping process.
- a separate watermark insert can first be manufactured and perforated, and the separately produced watermark insert then connected to the carrier screen, in particular welded or glued.
- a plastic plate can first be inserted into the carrier screen, and a watermark insert can be produced from the inserted plastic plate in the deep-drawing process or in the hot stamping process.
- the watermark insert integrated in the carrier screen is then perforated, optionally together with the carrier screen.
- the watermark insert can also be injected directly into a cut-out section of the screen mesh with a corresponding tool shape, so that a particularly intimate connection with the screen mesh is created.
- the dewatering screen can also have a plastic encapsulation or plastic back injection, which connects the watermark insert to the carrier screen.
- the watermark insert is preferably arranged in a cut-out area of the carrier screen and is only connected to it in a preferably serrated edge area.
- a laser cutting device can be used to create a recess at the point of the screen fabric at which the watermark insert is provided, which is somewhat smaller, for example 1/10 mm smaller than the desired shape of the watermark insert.
- the edge region can in particular be designed in the form of a pattern, preferably in a serrated shape.
- the watermark insert can be inserted or preferably injected into this cut-out partial area, as described above.

- the watermark insert preferably has a plurality of perforations which ensure dewatering during paper manufacture.
- the dimensions of these drainage perforations are selected to be so small that no fibers adhere to them during paper manufacture.
- Typical perforation diameters are between 100 ⁇ m and a few 100 ⁇ m, for example around 500 ⁇ m.
- the perforations preferably taper towards the design surface of the watermark insert located at the top.
- the carrier screen is preferably cut out in the area of the watermark to be generated, and the watermark insert is injected into the cut-out area of the carrier screen.
- FIG. 1 shows a schematic representation of a top view of a section of a bank note 10 with a two-stage watermark 14 that was generated in the paper substrate 12 of the bank note.
- the watermark 14 like the watermarks shown below, is shown in black on a white background for illustrative reasons.
- watermarks represent thin spots in a security paper, for example the paper substrate 12, which are usually barely or not at all recognizable in incident light and which appear in transmitted light with light areas against the darker background of the undiluted paper substrate.
- the areas that appear dark in transmitted light, in particular the undiluted paper substrate outside the watermark and undiluted partial areas within the watermark, are shown in white in the figures, while the areas that appear light in transmitted light are shown in black. Since the described watermarks each have two levels, they exclusively contain either dark areas (not diluted, white in the figures) or light areas (diluted, black in the figures) and have no intermediate tones.
- the two-stage watermark 14 shows a motif with two opposing motif components 20, 30, namely a motif component 20 in a positive representation and a directly adjoining motif component 30 in a negative representation.
- the first motif component 20 contains light motif structures 22 as an image motif, which in the exemplary embodiment form the letters “POS” in front of the dark background 24.
- the first motif component 20 represents a positive motif component (or: motif component in positive representation), since the light motif structures 22 not only with the dark background 24 of the motif component 20, but also with the dark background of the paper substrate 12 outside the watermark 14 contrast, and the motif component 20 is therefore designed like a conventional positive representation.
- the second motif component 30 contains dark motif structures 32 as an image motif, in the exemplary embodiment the letters "NEG" "form in front of the light background 34.
- the second motif component 30 represents a negative motif component (or: motif component in negative representation) in the context of this application, since the dark ones Motif structures 32 contrast with the light background 34, but have the same brightness as the dark background of the paper substrate 12 outside the watermark 14, so that the motif component 30 is designed like a conventional negative representation.
- the two motif components 20, 30 appear to the viewer with a clearly different, even contradicting appearance. On the one hand, this draws attention to the watermark 14 and, on the other hand, ensures that it is easy to recognize.
- the contrasting appearance is reinforced by the fact that the positive and negative motif components 20, 30 directly adjoin one another with a sharp transition.
- both the light motif structures 22 and the dark motif structures 32 are designed with very sharp edges, so that the positive and negative motif components 20, 30 each appear sharp and with high contrast.
- the dewatering screen 40 comprises a carrier screen 42 with a screen fabric 44 which is cut out in a partial area 50.
- the screen fabric 44 has at least one system each of interwoven warp threads 46 running in the longitudinal direction and weft threads 48 running transversely thereto.
- the screen fabric can contain, for example, a metal fabric, in particular a bronze fabric, a metal-plastic mixed fabric, in particular a bronze-plastic mixed fabric, or also a pure plastic fabric.
- the carrier screen 42 can contain both a single-layer and a multi-layer screen mesh, with only single-layer screen meshes being shown in the figures for the sake of simplicity.
- a plastic watermark insert 54 which is connected at its edge to the screen fabric 44, is arranged in the cut-out partial area 50 of the screen fabric 44.
- the connection can be made in a variety of ways, for example by means of a plastic encapsulation or back injection molding, with the aid of a plurality of fastening knobs arranged along the edge, or also by welding or gluing.
- the plastic watermark insert 54 is an injection-molded element that is injected directly into the cut-out portion 50 of the screen mesh 44 with a corresponding tool shape and thereby forms a particularly intimate connection with the screen mesh.
- the injection-molded watermark insert 54 consists of a base body 56, which has two opposing motif generating areas 60, 70 on its upper side, which are used to generate the motif components 20, 30 of the watermark motif.
- Each motif generation area 60, 70 contains one A plurality of motif elements 62 and 72, which are designed in the first motif generation area 60 as elevations 62 protruding from the base body 56 and in the second motif generation area 70 as depressions 72 protruding into the base body 56.
- the height level 64, 74 of the base body 56 is different in the two motif generation areas 60, 70, the height base level of a motif generation area being defined as that height level that takes up more than 75% of the area of the respective motif generation area.
- the basic height level of the base body drops in a very narrow transition area 78 with a transition width of only 0.5 mm or less from the negative motif generation area 70 to the positive motif generation area 60.
- the transition width is the width within which the height difference between the two motif generation areas drops from 90% to 10%.
- the narrow transition area creates a sharp transition between the positive and negative motif components 20, 30, so that these are directly adjacent to one another (butt to abut) ( Fig. 1 ).
- the height level 64 of the base body 56 is at the level of the screen surface 52. Starting from this height level 64, the motif elements 62 of the first motif generation area 60 represent protrusions protruding from the base body 56 A dark background 24 of unchanged paper thickness against which the motif elements 62 stand out as bright motif structures 22 so that the in Fig. 1 positive motif component 20 shown is generated.
- the elevations 62 can be produced with sharp edges 66 with an edge width of 0.5 mm or less.
- the edge width is the width within which the height of the elevations drops from 90% of the maximum height to 10%.
- the sharp-edged elevations 62 produce sharp-edged thin areas during papermaking and thus the desired sharp-edged bright motif structures 22 ( Fig. 1 ).
- the height level 74 of the base body 56 lies above the screen surface 52.
- the motif elements 72 of the second motif generation area 70 represent depressions protruding into the base body 56 74 lying areas a light background 34 less paper thickness.
- the height level of the watermark insert 54 is at the level of the screen surface 52, so that the motif elements 72 produce areas of unchanged paper thickness which, when viewed in transmitted light, stand out as dark motif structures 32 against the light background 34, so that the in Fig. 1 negative motif component 30 shown is generated.
- the depressions 72 can be formed with sharp edges 76 with an edge width of 0.5 mm or less.
- the edge width is the width within which the depth of the depressions drops from 90% of the maximum depth to 10%.
- the base body 56 is provided with a plurality of perforations 58.
- the diameter of the perforations 58 is selected to be so small that no fibers adhere to them during paper manufacture. Typical perforation diameters are between 100 ⁇ m and a few 100 ⁇ m, for example around 500 ⁇ m.
- Fig. 3 shows, as a further embodiment of the invention, in a schematic representation, a plan view of a section of a bank note 10 with a two-stage watermark 16 which is generated in the paper substrate 12 of the bank note.
- the watermark 16 shows a motif with two opposing motif components 80, 90, namely a microscopic motif component 80 and a macroscopic motif component 90, which are arranged multiple times next to one another.
- the first motif component 80 contains small motif structures 82 with a line width of only 0.5 mm, which in the exemplary embodiment form the light lettering “micro” in front of a dark background 84. Because of the small, characteristic dimensions of the motif structures 82, here the small line width, the first motif component 80 represents a microscopic motif component in the context of this application.
- the second motif component 90 contains large motif structures 92 with a line width of 2.5 mm, that is, a multiple of the line width of the small motif structures 82.
- the large motif structures 92 form the light lettering "macro" against a dark background 94. Because of the large, characteristic dimensions of the motif structures 92, here the large line width, the second motif component 90 represents a macroscopic motif component in the context of this application.
- the two motif components 80, 90 appear to the viewer because of the great difference in line widths with a clearly different, even contradicting appearance. On the one hand, this draws attention to the watermark 16 and, on the other hand, ensures that the watermark 16 is easy to recognize.
- the large motif structures 92 are designed with very sharp edges, so that both the microscopic and the macroscopic motif component 80, 90 each appear with high contrast.
- Fig. 4 Dewatering screen 40 shown schematically in cross-section is used, which is basically like that in connection with Fig. 2 is constructed and only differs in the design of the watermark insert 100.
- the watermark insert 100 is an injection-molded element which is injected directly into the cut-out partial area of the screen mesh 44 using a corresponding mold.
- the injection-molded watermark insert 100 consists of a base body 102, which has two opposing motif generating areas 110, 120 on its upper side, which are used to generate the motif components 80, 90 of the watermark motif.
- Each theme generation area contains a plurality of motif elements 112 and 122, which in the embodiment of Figures 3 and 4 are formed in both motif generation areas as elevations protruding from the base body 102.
- the height level 104 of the base body 102 is at the level of the screen surface 52.
- the motif elements can also be designed as depressions protruding into the base body.
- the reference variable for determining whether motif elements protrude from the main body or protrude into the main body is the height level that takes up more than 75% of the area of the respective motif generation area and that is defined as the basic height level of the main body in the respective motif generation area.
- the motif elements 112 have a characteristic lateral dimension, here a line width 114, of only 0.5 mm. During papermaking, the first motif generation area 110 therefore generates, with its areas located at the height level 104, a dark background 84 of unchanged paper thickness, in front of which the thin areas in the paper generated by the motif elements 112 stand out as microscopic motif structures 82, so that the in Fig. 1 microscopic motif component 80 shown is generated.
- the motif elements 122 have a characteristic lateral dimension that is 5 times larger, namely a line width 124 of 2.5 mm.
- the motif elements 122 can be formed with sharp edges 126 with an edge width of 0.5 mm or less.
- the edge width is the width within which the height of the motif elements 122 drops from 90% of the maximum value to 10%.
- the second motif generation area 120 with its areas located at the height level 104 generates a dark background 94 of unchanged paper thickness, in front of which the thin areas in the paper created by the sharply edged motif elements 122 stand out as macroscopic, sharply edged motif structures 92, so that the in Fig. 1 Macroscopic motif component 90 shown is generated.
- its base body 102 is provided with a plurality of perforations 58, as already in connection with FIG Fig. 2 described.
- Fig. 5 shows in (a) to (d) further configurations of two-stage watermarks produced according to the invention in a paper substrate 12. From the shown appearance of the watermarks, together with the following explanations, the design of the associated dewatering screen results in each case on the basis of the above explanations on the Figures 1 to 4 .
- the watermark 130 of the Fig. 5 (a) is a modification of the watermark of the Figures 1 and 2 and has a positive motif component 20 and a negative motif component 30.
- the negative motif component 30 contains dark motif structures 32, which in the embodiment of FIG Fig. 5 (a) is formed by the upper half of the lettering “positive-negative” in front of a light background 34.
- the positive motif component 20 contains light motif structures 22, which are formed by the lower half of the lettering “positive-negative” in front of a dark background 24.
- the light motif structures 22 are compared to the dark motif structures 32 by one predetermined distance, for example by half a line width, shifted to the right in order to produce a complex and difficult to reproduce appearance in the watermark 130.
- both the light motif structures 22 and the dark motif structures 32 are formed with very sharp edges, so that the positive and negative motif components 20, 30 each appear to abut one another with high contrast.
- the watermark 140 of the Fig. 5 (b) is a modification of the watermark of the Figures 3 and 4 and has, as macroscopic motif component 90, the lettering "INLINE" in bold negative type.
- the characteristic dimension of this macroscopic motif component is given by the line width of the bold negative font, which is 6 mm, for example, with the edge width of the lettering being 0.5 mm or less.
- the inside of the bold "INLINE" lettering forms the microscopic motif component 80 in which the "INLINE" lettering is again arranged, this time in narrow positive writing 82.
- the characteristic dimension of this microscopic motif component is given by the line width of the positive writing, which is, for example, 0.5 mm.
- the watermark 150 of the Fig. 5 (c) shows the sequence of letters "PLPLPL” in bold positive font as macroscopic motif component 90.
- the characteristic dimension of this macroscopic motif component is given by the line width of the bold positive font, for example 5 mm, with the edge width of the lettering being 0.4 mm or less.
- the area surrounding the bold lettering "PLPLPL” forms the microscopic motif component 80, in which a fine point grid is present.
- the characteristic dimension of this microscopic motif component is given by the diameter of the individual points 82, which in the exemplary embodiment is 0.4 mm.
- watermark 160 shows FIG Fig. 5 (d) the sequence of letters "PLPLPL” in bold negative font as a macroscopic motif component 90.
- the characteristic dimension of this macroscopic motif component is given by the line width of the bold negative font, which is 8 mm, for example, with the edge width of the lettering being 0.5 mm or less.
- the inside of the bold lettering "PLPLPL” forms the microscopic motif component 80 in which a fine grid of points is arranged.
- the characteristic dimension of this microscopic motif component is given by the diameter of the individual points 82, which in the exemplary embodiment is 0.5 mm.

Description
The invention relates to a dewatering screen for the production of paper with a two-stage watermark and a method for producing such a dewatering screen.
During paper production on cylinder mold machines or Fourdrinier machines, paper pulp is continuously deposited on a moving dewatering screen and is solidified to the extent that it can be pulled off the dewatering screen as a moist paper web for further processing. In particular, security papers for banknotes, identity documents and the like are often equipped with watermarks for protection, which allow the authenticity of the security paper to be checked and which at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction.
When producing paper with watermarks, a distinction is made between two-level watermarks with a strong light-dark effect and multi-level watermarks with smooth transitions between light and dark and a detailed representation of a motif. The term “multi-level” is to be understood as a distinction to two-level light-dark watermarks and includes all watermarks with more than two levels of lightness and in particular also includes watermarks with continuous light-dark transitions.
To create two-stage watermarks, metal wires or metal moldings, so-called electrotypes, are typically soldered onto the screen structure in order to completely close the drainage screen at these points. However, the representable motifs are limited due to the structural requirements for the structure and stability of the electrotypes.
Proceeding from this, the invention is based on the object of creating a dewatering screen for the production of paper with a two-stage watermark that combines a high level of protection against forgery with an attractive visual appearance and great freedom of design for the designer.
- K2): in case M2) at least one motif generation area has motif elements with a small characteristic lateral dimension and at least one motif generation area has motif elements with a large characteristic lateral dimension, the large characteristic lateral dimension being at least a factor of 3 larger than the small characteristic lateral dimension.
In an advantageous embodiment, the basic height level of a motif generation area is that height level which takes up more than 60%, preferably more than 70%, particularly preferably more than 75% of the area of the motif generation area. The motif elements are then formed relative to the basic height level, either by elevations protruding from the base body or by depressions protruding into the base body.
In the case of M1) and K1), the basic height level of the positive motif generation area is advantageously at the height level of the screen surface on which Paper is deposited. The basic height level of the negative motif generation area is advantageously between 0.1 mm and 2 mm above the height level of the screen surface.
In the case of M1) and K1), the basic height level of the base body advantageously falls in a transition area from the negative motif generation area to the positive motif generation area, the transition width of which is 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less .
In the case of M1) and K1), the elevations and depressions preferably each have sharp edges with an edge width of 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less. Furthermore, in the case of M1) and K1), it is advantageously provided that at least one motif generation area with elevations and at least one motif generation area with depressions directly adjoin one another.
In the case of M2) and K2), the characteristic lateral dimension is in particular the line thickness or the diameter of the motif elements. The large characteristic lateral dimension is advantageously larger by at least a factor 5, in particular by a factor 8, than the small characteristic lateral dimension. In advantageous configurations, the small characteristic lateral dimension is 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less. In advantageous configurations, the large characteristic lateral dimension is 1.5 mm or more, preferably 2.0 mm or more, particularly preferably 2.5 mm or more. The motif structures with the large characteristic lateral dimension advantageously have sharp edges with a Edge width of 0.6 mm or less, preferably 0.5 mm or less, particularly preferably 0.4 mm or less.
The motif elements of at least one of the motif generation areas advantageously form an alphanumeric character string. Alternatively or additionally, the motif elements of at least one of the motif generation areas can form a point or line grid. It can be provided in particular that the dot or line grid is arranged inside or outside of an alphanumeric character string.
The motif elements are preferably designed in one piece with the base body. As a result, a particularly high stability of the watermark insert can be ensured with simple production even with small dimensions and sharp edges of the motif elements.
Advantageously, the motif elements designed as elevations protrude perpendicularly from the base body and the motif elements designed as depressions protrude perpendicularly into the base body.
In an advantageous embodiment, the watermark insert is an injection-molded insert. The injection-molded insert is expediently formed from a hydrophobic plastic, for example from polyoxymethylene. To reduce wear and tear during operation, wear-reducing additives can be added to the plastic.
Although the injection molding process is currently preferred for producing the watermark insert, the watermark insert can also be produced using the deep-drawing process or the hot stamping process. In all manufacturing processes, a separate watermark insert can first be manufactured and perforated, and the separately produced watermark insert then connected to the carrier screen, in particular welded or glued. Alternatively, for example, a plastic plate can first be inserted into the carrier screen, and a watermark insert can be produced from the inserted plastic plate in the deep-drawing process or in the hot stamping process. In a subsequent process step, the watermark insert integrated in the carrier screen is then perforated, optionally together with the carrier screen. When using a deep-drawing process, an already pre-perforated plastic plate can be used, so that the subsequent perforation step can be omitted. Finally, the watermark insert can also be injected directly into a cut-out section of the screen mesh with a corresponding tool shape, so that a particularly intimate connection with the screen mesh is created. The dewatering screen can also have a plastic encapsulation or plastic back injection, which connects the watermark insert to the carrier screen.
The watermark insert is preferably arranged in a cut-out area of the carrier screen and is only connected to it in a preferably serrated edge area. For this purpose, for example, a laser cutting device can be used to create a recess at the point of the screen fabric at which the watermark insert is provided, which is somewhat smaller, for example 1/10 mm smaller than the desired shape of the watermark insert. The edge region can in particular be designed in the form of a pattern, preferably in a serrated shape. The watermark insert can be inserted or preferably injected into this cut-out partial area, as described above.
The carrier screen advantageously contains a screen fabric with at least one system each of interwoven warp threads running in the longitudinal direction and weft threads running transversely thereto, the screen fabric advantageously being either a metal fabric, in particular a bronze fabric, a metal-plastic mixed fabric, in particular a bronze-plastic -Mixed fabric, or contains a pure synthetic fabric.
Furthermore, the watermark insert preferably has a plurality of perforations which ensure dewatering during paper manufacture. The dimensions of these drainage perforations are selected to be so small that no fibers adhere to them during paper manufacture. Typical perforation diameters are between 100 μm and a few 100 μm, for example around 500 μm. The perforations preferably taper towards the design surface of the watermark insert located at the top.

In the method, the carrier screen is preferably cut out in the area of the watermark to be generated, and the watermark insert is injected into the cut-out area of the carrier screen.

The

The
The two
The injection-molded

The
In other configurations, the motif elements can also be designed as depressions protruding into the base body. The reference variable for determining whether motif elements protrude from the main body or protrude into the main body is the height level that takes up more than 75% of the area of the respective motif generation area and that is defined as the basic height level of the main body in the respective motif generation area.
