Description
The present invention relates to a process for producing a leather thread.
So far, leather threads are made by cutting flat leather into long strips, so that a comparatively thick thread is obtained. However, the leather thread thus obtained is neither durable nor can it be used in a stitch forming manufacturing process. This is regrettable in that there is a great need in the market for leather threads, for example in the motor vehicle seat area in which a textile with leather thread would give the desired visual impression and on the other hand would ensure the required breathability.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a method for producing a leather thread.
According to the invention, the leather is comminuted, and indeed crushed very heavily, so that it is ultimately present in fibrous form, preferably even in powder form. The fiber length should not exceed 2 mm, preferably 1 mm. The shredded leather is mixed with an extrudable binder. Suitable for this reaction resins of polyester or polyamide base, or organic collagen-containing materials. If plastics are used as binders, they may preferably be curable by heat or UV treatment.
The mixed mass of crushed leather and binder is extruded around a core thread into a thread and cured. In this way, a leather-containing thread is produced whose mechanical properties are characterized primarily by the binder, but whose visual appearance is characterized by a sufficient proportion of leather in the leather-binder mixture is guaranteed. Preferably, the leather content in the binder is between 5 and 40% by weight. In this addition, on the one hand, it is ensured that the leather visually appears in the thread to the desired extent and, on the other hand, that the mechanical properties of the thread, in particular the tensile strength, are not impaired too much by the leather content.
In this way, threads can be produced with a diameter between 10 .mu.m and 1000 .mu.m , which can be used in a stitch-forming process, such as a knitted or knitted fabric, or in woven textile. In particular, such a thread can be processed very well in a woven fabric, in which the leather thread is introduced into the fabric, for example, as a weft or warp thread.
According to the invention, the thread is extruded around at least one core thread. In this way it is achieved that a desired mechanical stability, in particular tensile strength, can be ensured by the core thread, so that the part of the thread extruded around the core thread can have a higher leather content and thus appear more visually embossed. Preferably, we use exactly one core thread that lies in the center of the extruded thread. However, it is also possible to use two or more core threads, which are preferably twisted or twisted to thereby ensure better adhesion of the extruded material to the surface of the core threads.
Preferably, a core thread made of high-strength material such as PA66 is used, which is positive for the reliability of the extrusion process as well as for the tensile strength of the extruded leather thread.
Preferably, a core thread provided with a glue thread, e.g. is wrapped. Such a thread allows a better adhesion of the extruded around the soul thread leather-containing material. The same purpose is also served by a coupling agent, e.g. chemically but possibly also by plasma treatment is applied to the core thread.
Preferably, the core thread used is a polyester or polyamide thread, which preferably has a thickness of 0.1-1 mm. During extrusion, such a core thread can simply be guided in the middle of the extruder die, so that the leather-binder mixture can be extruded uniformly around this core thread. This results in a leather thread with excellent optical as well as mechanical properties.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a roughened core thread is used, which leads to a better connection with the extruded binder / leather mixture and thus leads to more stable threads.
The extruded leather thread according to the invention is preferably extruded to a thickness of 0.2-3 mm. In this area, threads of useful quality can be obtained from the leather-binder mixture.
In the case where a plastic is used as a binder, the thread after extrusion is preferably cured immediately, for example, by being passed through a thermal plant or UV system, depending on how the plastic is cured.
As a binder is particularly suitable a polyamide or polyester resin, in particular of a type which is heat or UV curable, because in this way It can be ensured that polymerization does not already take place in the extruder.
Preferably, the leather is comminuted into powder and the leather powder is mixed with the binder to form an extrudable mass. By crushing into powder, the fiber texture of the leather is broken up, which means that no inhomogeneities are present in the mass to be extruded. The use of leather powder in the extrusion compound thus leads to more uniform and mechanically durable and stable threads.
The extruder used is preferably a screw extruder, in particular a screw extruder, which has a central thread feed for a core thread. If a thermosetting plastic is used as a binder for the extrusion mass, the screw extruder can also be cooled.
The invention likewise relates to a thread which has been produced by one of the above-mentioned methods.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiments described above may be combined with one another in any manner.
The extruded leather thread can still be finished as desired, e.g. by embossing and profiling to give the round extruded thread a more natural appearance. The thread can also be dyed or provided with a perfume after extrusion.
The invention will be described below by way of example with reference to the schematic drawing. This shows a schematic view of a plant for producing a leather thread.
With the method according to the invention, leather threads, that is to say threads with a leather content of about 5 to 40% by weight, can be produced industrially and used for a very wide variety of applications, for example for upholstery textiles.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described above, but instead may be varied within the scope of the following claims.
Instead of a screw extruder, any other type of extruder, for example a hydraulic extruder, can also be used. Furthermore, for example, the mixer and the extruder may be arranged in a housing.
