Definitions

  • the invention relates to an assembly connectable to a gas or shocking-purpose handgun for the shooting of a non-lethal projectile, wherein the handgun comprises a free outlet opening for the high-pressure gasses released at firing, and the assembly can be attached to this outlet opening and it comprises:
  • a shocking-purpose handgun of the afore defined type is described in US 2003/0106545 A1 , which is designed as a pistol, and in its hand grip a cartridge is stored which is filled with a high pressure gas, and when the firing trigger is operated a controlled amount of high pressure gas is released.
  • a projectile magazine is arranged that stores a plurality of spherical, non-lethal projectiles; and the feeder opening of the magazine communicates with a rear section of the firing barrel.
  • a spring loaded biasing assembly arranged in the magazine ensures that out of the projectiles stored in the magazine, after each shot a new projectile is fed in the initial firing position.
  • the high-pressure gas released at firing can act on the projectile only through a sliding valve i.e. the projectile will be pushed forward first by the mechanical force provided by the sliding valve, and this mechanical effect lasts as long as the forward movement of the sliding valve closes the feeder opening between the projectile magazine and the firing barrel to prevent thereby the escape of the gas towards the magazine.
  • a gas channel will be opened towards the projectile which will be shot under the pressure of the gas.
  • a similar shocking-purpose handgun is described in the US 8,033,276 B1 publication, which does not show the projectile magazine as such but only the feeder opening between the magazine and the firing barrel, and describes in detail the design of the moving valve. It shows several valve embodiments how the gas channel can be opened after the initial movement of the valve and of the closure of the feeder opening. In most of these embodiments the gas channel is extending along the exterior of the valve through opening offset from the central valve axis. In such embodiments the same drawbacks can be experienced as described in connection with the pervious publication.
  • US2010/0313866A1 describes a firing structure of a paintball marker, which -apart from the differences between shocking purpose handguns and paintballs, have a projectile feeder that feed projectiles in a one-by-one order in the firing path, but in this document there is no efficient sealing in the basic state of the fed projectile, therefore the energy of the shooting gases can leak, decreasing thereby the shooting force.
  • German publication De 052227 114 describes a toy-gun, in which the toy projectile is shut under the pressure of a gas pressure pulse.
  • the toy projectile is shut under the pressure of a gas pressure pulse.
  • there is no automatic feeder and there is no sealing between the projectile and the barrel, therefore owing to inevitable leakages a part of the driving gas pressure is not utilized for advancing the projectile.
  • the object of the invention is to provide a solution, wherein the projectile is moved already at the initial moment after firing both by the moving valve and by the gas pressure, whereby the pressure force of the gas can be utilized in a more efficient way.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide an assembly which can be attached to the existing conventional i.e. non shocking-purpose handguns, whereby their use as an efficient non-lethal arm with high shocking effect can be realized.
  • the projectile which is preferably made of a resilient material should have a slightly higher diameter than the inner diameter of the firing barrel, and in the initial phase of the firing first the projectile has to be deformed to take the size of the firing barrel.
  • the combined effect of the mechanical force of the sliding valve and that of the gas pressure should be used; and in this initial phase a gas-tight connection will be established between the projectile and the valve that prevents the gasses from escaping through the feeder opening that would otherwise decrease the pressure, and when the projectile leaves the valve, the valve will be in a position that has closed the feeder opening.
  • an assembly is connectable to a gas or shocking-purpose handgun for the shooting of a non-lethal projectile, wherein the handgun comprises a muzzle for the high-pressure gasses released at firing, and the assembly can be attached to this muzzle and it comprises:
  • the rear end of the firing barrel is connected to a connection tube provided with a stepped axial inner bore, and the valve is guided for axial movement in the bore, and the valve has a rear end opposite to the direction of the gas flow, and the rear end has a flange portion with a diameter higher than the diameter of the valve in the guided section, and the flange is arranged and guided in a rear bore of the connection tube with higher diameter, and the movement of the flange is blocked by the step of the bore of the connection tube limiting thereby the forward movement of the valve.
  • the spring bias of the valve is provided by a pressure spring placed in the stepped bore of the connection tube and surrounds the exterior of the valve, the first end of the spring is pressing against the front surface of the flange and a second end thereof is pressing against a front shoulder of said stepped bore.
  • the handgun has a standard design having a barrel, a magazine and a firing trigger, wherein instead of a live cartridge the magazine is loaded by blank cartridges or by shocking-purpose cartridges.
  • the end of the barrel of the handgun comprises a section with internal threading, and the assembly is connected to this internal threading by means of a threaded connection member.
  • the projectile magazine comprises a linear storage unit made by a curved sheet material, and in the interior of the storage unit a biasing assembly is arranged that comprises a spring in its front part, and the biasing assembly presses a projectile located behind it, and the projectile magazine comprises a feeder opening which is opened in a fully pressed position of the biasing assembly and allows thereby feeding of the projectiles in the storage unit.
  • the bolt keeps the pressed position of the biasing assembly for the duration of loading, the bolt can be handled from the exterior of the assembly, and the storage unit defines a cut cooperating with and temporarily engaging the bolt.
  • a second preferable embodiment comprises a concentric outer tube arranged coaxially around the firing barrel defining a space therebetween, the space comprises a closed helical path for the projectiles constituting thereby a helical projectile magazine and has a rear end communicating with the feeder opening, and comprises a helical spring-biasing assembly in the front part of the space, and a pressing member is coupled to the rear end of the spring-biasing assembly to press the projectiles loaded in the helical magazine in rearward direction.
  • the pressing member is connected to an outwardly projecting bolt
  • the outer tube comprises a helical slot following the path of the pressing member of the biasing assembly, the bolt extend out through the slot, and in the slot at a position corresponding to the pressed state of the biasing assembly a feeder opening is provided that enables loading of the projectiles.
  • the advantages of the first aspect of the present invention i.e. when a conventional handgun is combined with a special attachment also represent a way how the objectives can be reached.
  • a system consisting of a handgun and an assembly for the shooting of a non-lethal projectile
  • the handgun comprises a barrel, a magazine and a firing trigger
  • the barrel has a front end designed for attachment of a separate assembly
  • the magazine is loaded instead of a live cartridge by blank cartridges or by shocking-purpose cartridges
  • the front end of the barrel is coupled by a releasable connection to an assembly capable of shooting a non-lethal projectile, and the assembly comprises:
  • a conventional handgun 1 or stun gun has been shown, which is a pistol, and an assembly 10 according to the invention is attached to it in such a way that on an internal thread tooled in the front end of barrel 2 of the handgun 1 a connection member 3 is attached which comprises a second threaded opposite end portion connected to the rear end of the assembly 10.
  • said threaded connections are perfectly gas-tight and can resist transient pressure waves which might reach several hundreds or even more than thousand bars.
  • An appropriate axial bore is provided in the connection member 3.
  • the handgun 1 has a conventional design with a magazine 4 positions in its hand grip, and in case of its use according to the invention blank cartridges are inserted in the magazine 4.
  • FIG. 1 several of such blank cartridges are shown of which blank cartridge 5 is in shooting position.
  • the handgun 1 has a conventional trigger 6 and cock 7 operated by the trigger 6.
  • the trigger 6 When the trigger 6 is operated the cock 7 hits a percussion cap in the center of the blank cartridge 5, whereby an explosion is caused, and depending on the design of the blank cartridge a high volume of gas is delivered which has a pressure in the range of 300-450 bars in case of cartridges for shocking purposes and 3000 to 4500 bars for military purpose blank cartridges.
  • the design of such cartridges is such that it maintains the pressure though a comparatively long period within the barrel with appropriate caliber.
  • the handgun 1 should be distinguished from conventional airblow guns wherein the gas pressure is typically around 60 bars, or also from guns shooting paintballs by air pressure because during firing the pressure provided in the barrel 2 of the handgun 1 is at least 300 bars.
  • the conventional design of the handgun 1 enables automatically repeated shoots as long as there remains at least a single blank cartridge 5 in the magazine 4.
  • the assembly 10 according to the invention can be used to shoot projectiles 11 with circular cross-section and having preferably a spherical shape.
  • the projectile 11 belongs to the group of non-lethal projectiles which have several known designs; most of them are spherical like a ball. A most preferred design is made of rubber or of a similarly resilient material, and all of them can have a resilient deformation.
  • the diameter of the projectile 11 is slightly higher that the caliber diameter of firing barrel 12 through which it will pass through with high velocity, as it will be described. In an exemplary embodiment the difference in diameters can be as high as 1mm, wherein the inner diameter of the 12 firing barrel can be 11 mm and that of the projectile 11 can be 12 mm.
  • connection member 3 On a threaded outer surface of the connection member 3 a sleeve 13 it attached by its hollow threading on which a connection tube 14 is fixed that has a stepwise narrowing internal hole.
  • a sliding valve 15 is arranged that has the illustrated stepped shape with a left rear flange portion 16.
  • a pressure spring 18 is placed between the rear flange portion and a shoulder 17 made in the interior of the right side of the connection tube 14 which strives to keep the sliding valve 15 in the initial position shown in Fig. 1 . It is important to note that near to the end which is far from the flange portion 16 the diameter of the internal bore of the connection tube 14 is smaller forming thereby a valve opening with an internal shoulder 20.
  • the assembly 10 comprises in addition to the firing barrel 12 a projectile magazine 21 placed in a space beside the firing barrel 12 and it can either have a straight or a spiral shape and it has the task of providing space for a large number of rubber projectiles 11.
  • a feeder opening 22 is provided between the projectile magazine 21 and the rear end of the firing barrel 12 i.e. the front end of the connection tube 14; and this opening allows for the rearmost one of the rubber projectiles 11 stored in the projectile magazine 21 to be placed in the center line of the assembly 10 which is the initial position for firing.
  • a biasing assembly 23 In Fig. 1 only an end portion of a biasing assembly 23 can be seen which presses the extreme forwards one of the rubber projectiles 11, and this pressure ensures that following each shot always a new rubber projectile 11 arrive through the feeder opening in a shooting position.
  • Fig. 2 is a sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 , which illustrates the system a few thousandths of a second after firing.
  • the pulling of the trigger 6 causes explosion of the explosive stored in the blank cartridge 5, and the explosion tears the closure at the front end of the cartridge open, and the gases will streaming forward with high pressure in the interior of the barrel 2 towards the firing barrel 12.
  • the gas pressure will act on the shoulder 20 in the interior of the sliding valve 15 whereby slides this valve in forward direction.
  • the front surface of the pressure valve 15 will press against the rubber projectile 11 which is at its initial position and will push the projectile forward with a predetermined force.
  • the initial resistance is caused by the initial high resistance caused by lower inner diameter of the firing barrel 12 and the larger size of the rubber projectile 11. Additionally to this pressure, through a central opening 19 of the sliding valve 15 (see Fig. 1 ) the gas pressure will directly act on the rubber projectile 11 and as a result of such a double pressure effect the rubber projectile 11 will move forward and will be pressed in the interior of the firing barrel 12 with a smaller diameter. It is important to note that during the period when the sliding valve 15 presses against the rubber projectile 11, the gas path will be closed by the presence of the rubber projectile 11, thus the gasses cannot stream towards the feeder opening 22.
  • Fig. 3 shows an intermediate position when the rubber projectile 11 has left the sliding valve 15 but it is still in the interior of the firing barrel 12 and accelerates in forward direction.
  • the gasses can easily move towards the free atmosphere, and the pressure in the inside gas space will rapidly decrease to reach the atmospheric level. Then the biasing force of the pressure spring 18 will move the siding valve 15 again to its initial position shown in Fig. 1 , whereas the feeder opening 22 will be again uncovered and the biasing assembly 23 moves a new rubber projectile 11 to the basic firing position. The system will then be again ready for a new firing.
  • Fig. 4 shows a detail of the assembly 10 of Fig. 1 in perspective view that comprises the projectile magazine 21. It can be observed that by means of straps 24, 25 a storage unit 26 is attached to the firing barrel 12. The storage unit 26 prevents the rubber projectiles 11 from falling out of their storage space. In the front part of the storage unit 26 a spring 27 of the biasing assembly 23 is arranged, and a portion of the spring 27 is coupled to bolt 28 that extends out from the storage unite 26 in lateral direction. At a position corresponding to the bolt 28 a cut 29 is made in the sheet material forming the storage unit 26.
  • the bolt 28 When the bolt 28 is engaged in the cut 29 (which operation can be carried out from the outside of the unit 26), then the bolt 28 will hold the spring 27, and then the biasing assembly 23 will not press or bias the rubber projectiles 11 positioned after one another. In that position the required number of rubber projectiles 11 can be inserted and stored in the projectile magazine 21 through a feeder opening 30. When after the full feeding the bolt 28 is turned slightly and thereby disengaged from the cut 29, then the biasing assembly 23 with the spring 27 will move in rearward direction, closes the feeder opening 30 and presses the stored rubber projectiles 11 in that direction.
  • the projectile magazine 21 is arranged asymmetrically on the firing barrel 12 and because users do not like asymmetric design, an outer tube 31 shown in Fig. 5 can be pulled on and around the firing barrel 12 to cover the projectile magazine and its storage unit 26. The position of the outer tube 31 can be fixed by any one of several conventional ways.
  • a further embodiment of the assembly 10 according to the invention has been shown, in which the projectile magazine 21 has a higher storage space and can store more e.g. thirty rubber projectiles 11.
  • the firing barrel 12 of the assembly also holds the cylindrical outer tube 31, which now has a greater diameter, and in the space defined between the firing barrel 12 and the outer tube 31 a helical path 32 is placed which has a high pitch, and in the front part of this path 32 a helically designed spring-loaded biasing assembly 23 is arranged that can move along the path and presses the stored rubber projectiles 11.
  • Fig. 8 shows the biasing assembly 23 as removed from its space, and on the inner end thereof a pressing member 33 is fixed.
  • FIG. 7 shows the perspective view of the outer tube 31 when positioned on and around the firing barrel 12.
  • a helical slot 35 is provided on the outer tube 31 that follows the helical path therein.
  • a feeder opening 36 is provided close to the front end of the helical slot 35 which has a role similar to that of the feeder opening 30 described in the first embodiment.
  • the filling of the projectile magazine 21 can be carried out by pulling the biasing assembly 23 by means of the bolt 34 as long as the pressing element 33 moves over the feeder opening 36 and leaves it open, then the projectile-storing space of the helical path 32 can be filled with rubber projectiles 11.
  • the pressing member 33 of the biasing assembly 23 will press against the forward most one of the projectiles, and after each shot the pressing member 33 presses the stored rubber projectiles 11 in backward direction.
  • the helical path can receive a multifold quantity of rubber projectiles 11 compared to the capacity with a linear path.
  • An advantage of the present invention is that it can be attached to any type of standard handgun 1 i.e. the assembly 10 can be connected thereto.
  • the assembly 10 utilizes the energy of the released gasses with a high efficiency, and in the initial period of firing it acts not only by mechanical pressure on the rubber projectile 11 but directly uses a part of the pressure of the gasses and compels the projectile 11 to take the decreased diameter of the firing barrel 12. Then the forward displacement of the sliding valve 15 closes the feeder opening, and after the valve 15 has reached its abutment position the rubber projectile 11 is moved only by the pressing force of the gasses.
  • the deformation resistance of the rubber projectile 11 provides a transitional sealed connection between the front surface of the sliding valve 15 and the rubber projectile 15, and because of that the gasses arriving through the central frontal bore of the sliding valve 15 cannot get released through the feeder opening 22. After the full deformation of the rubber projectile 11 the forward movement of the sliding valve 15 has closed the feeder opening 22 and the gasses move the rubber projectile 11 in forward direction. Owing to the deformation of the rubber projectile 11 a sealed contact will be established with the interior of the firing barrel 12, and the full gas pressure is used for accelerating the projectile 11.
  • the assembly 10 can be used as long as the last projectile 11 has left the projectile magazine 21.
  • the solution according to the invention can be realized in forms different from the exemplary embodiments show, e.g. in certain fields of use a simpler single shot assembly can be satisfactory, which can be attached and removed by a simple turning movement and a loaded new assembly can replace it for second use. In that case there is no need for the function of the projectile magazine.
  • the connection can also be solved instead of the threaded connection by any other, sufficiently leakage proof fast connector.
