Banknotenverwahrungssysteme finden sich beispielsweise an Geldautomaten, Sortiermaschinen, Zählmaschinen, Einzahlautomaten und Bargeld-Recyclern. Dort werden Banknoten verwahrt, bis sie beispielsweise von einem Sicherheitsdienst abgeholt und zur Bank gebracht werden. Zur Sicherung der dort gelagerten Banknoten gegen Diebstahl bzw. um die Verwendung von aus Banknotenverwahrungssystemen gestohlenen Banknoten zu verhindern, ist es üblich, die Banknoten im Falle eines Diebstahls durch Auslösung eines Alarmzustandes noch im Banknotenverwahrungssystem blitzschnell mit Farbstoff, typischerweise mit farbiger Tinte, einzufärben, damit die Banknoten dadurch unbrauchbar werden und nicht mehr in Umlauf gebracht werden können. Denn verfärbte Banknoten sind für den Dieb unbrauchbar und wertlos. Dabei muss gewährleistet sein, dass mindestens 10% einer jeden Banknote eingefärbt werden (20% ist empfohlen, aber 10% ist in vielen Ländern als Minimum gesetzlich vorgeschrieben).Bank note storage systems can be found, for example, at ATMs, sorting machines, counting machines, deposit machines and cash recyclers.
