Description
- The present invention concerns the field of laundry washing techniques.
- In particular, the present invention refers to a laundry washing machine equipped with a level sensing device for sensing the liquid level in the machine.
- Nowadays the use of laundry washing machines, both "simple" laundry washing machines (i.e. laundry washing machines which can only wash and rinse laundry) and laundry washing-drying machines (i.e. laundry washing machines which can also dry laundry), is widespread.
- In the present description the term "laundry washing machine" will refer to both simple laundry washing machines and laundry washing-drying machines. Laundry washing machines generally comprise an external casing provided with a washing tub which contains a rotatable perforated drum where the laundry is placed.
- A loading/unloading door ensures access to the drum.
- Laundry washing machines typically comprise a water inlet circuit and a products supply unit for the introduction of water and washing/rinsing products (i.e. detergent, softener, etc.) into the tub.
- Known laundry washing machines are also provided with drain liquid devices that may operate during different phases of the washing cycle in order to drain liquid from the bottom of the tub and to convey the liquid either to the outside or inside the same washing tub. In the latter case, the drain liquid device is part of a recirculation circuit.
- The drain liquid devices typically drain water from the tub by means of a discharge pipe connected to the bottom of the tub.
- The laundry washing machines of know type are also typically equipped with a level sensing device for sensing the liquid level in the machine. The liquid level detected by this device is opportunely used, for example, to correctly activate the water inlet circuit and the drain liquid device during the phases of the washing cycle.
- Level sensing devices of known type comprise a pressure sensor, or pressure switch, which communicates with an air volume enclosed in an air chamber via a narrow conduit. The air chamber is typically arranged in the bottom part of the washing machine and is connected to the drain liquid device. More particularly, the air chamber communicates with the discharge pipe at the bottom of the tub. The air chamber is connected to the discharge pipe in such a way that the liquid in the chamber reflects the liquid level in the machine. The air volume enclosed above the liquid in the chamber is therefore subjected to a pressure which is sensed by the pressure sensor and then translated into a measure of the liquid level in the machine.
- A laundry washing machine showing an air chamber for a pressure sensor is disclosed in document
CN201598461U . - The air chamber disclosed in such document is realized in two parts: a lower part connected to the discharge pipe at the bottom of the tub and an upper closing part. The closing part then communicates with the pressure sensor.
- The two parts are assembled to define an air volume therein and the upper part is fixed to the washing tub by means of additional fastening elements.
- In general, the air chambers of known type realized in two parts have the upper part which is fixed to the washing tub by means of fastening elements, like clamps or iron wires.
- However, the level sensing devices above described belonging to the known technique pose some drawbacks.
- A first drawback posed by this known technique is constituted by the fact that the level sensing device is composed by a great number of pieces.
- This determines a complex structural construction which increases the assembling and/or the manufacturing time and costs of the level sensing device and of the machine.
- A further drawback posed by this known technique is constituted by the high failure rate due to the complex structural construction of the air chamber.
- The aim of the present invention is therefore to solve the noted drawbacks and thus providing a laundry washing machine having an improved liquid level sensing device arrangement.
- It is a first object of the invention to implement a laundry washing machine that makes it possible to reduce manufacturing and/or assembling time and costs.
- It is a further object of the invention to implement a laundry washing machine that makes it possible to increase reliability of the machine itself.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a laundry washing machine that lasts longer than machines of known type.

It should in any case be underlined that the present invention is not limited to laundry washing machines. On the contrary, the present invention can be conveniently applied to laundry washing-drying machines (i.e. laundry washing machines which can also dry laundry).
- In the present description, therefore, the term "laundry washing machine" will refer to both simple laundry washing machines and laundry washing-drying machines.
-
Figure 1 shows alaundry washing machine 1 according to a preferred embodiment of the invention. - The
laundry washing machine 1 comprises an external casing orhousing 2, in which awashing tub 3 is provided that contains arotatable drum 4, visible inFigures 2 and6 , where the laundry to be treated can be loaded. - The
tub 3 and thedrum 4 both preferably have a substantially cylindrical shape. Thehousing 2 is provided with a loading/unloading door 8 which allows access to thewashing drum 4. - The
tub 3 is preferably suspended in a floating manner inside thehousing 2, advantageously by means of a number of coil springs and shock-absorbers, not illustrated. - The
drum 4 is advantageously rotated by an electric motor, not illustrated, which preferably transmits the rotating motion to the shaft of thedrum 4, advantageously by means of a belt/pulley system. In a different embodiment of the invention, the motor can be directly associated with the shaft of thedrum 4. Thetub 3 is preferably connected to thecasing 2 by means of anelastic bellows 7, or gasket. - The
tub 3 preferably comprises two complementary hemi-shells tub 3. Preferably the hemi-shells shell 13 and a rear hemi-shell 14, are realized separately and then fixedly connected to form thetub 3. More preferably, the hemi-shells - The
lower portion 3a of thetub 3 preferably comprises aseat 17 suitable for receiving a heater device, not illustrated. Preferably theseat 17 is made in a single piece with thetub 3. - The
laundry washing machine 1 preferably comprises a water supply circuit preferably arranged in the upper part of thelaundry washing machine 1 and suited to supply water into thetub 3. The water supply circuit of a laundry washing machine is well known in the art, and therefore it will not be described in detail. - The
laundry washing machine 1 advantageously comprises aremovable drawer 6 provided with various compartments suited to be filled with washing and/or rinsing products (i.e. detergent, softener, etc.). - The
laundry washing machine 1 advantageously comprises awater outlet circuit 25, only partially illustrated in Figures from 2 to 7, suitable for withdrawing liquid from thelower portion 3a of thetub 3. - At this purpose, the
lower portion 3a of thetub 3 is provided with adischarge outlet 26 through which the liquid may be withdrawn from thetub 3, and preferably drained outside the machine. - The
discharge outlet 26 is preferably defined by acollar portion 27. Thecollar portion 27 comprises awall 27a which surrounds a longitudinal axis Y1 of thecollar portion 27, passing preferably through the centre of thecollar portion 27, as illustrated inFigure 5 . - More preferably, the
collar portion 27 comprises awall 27a which is advantageously substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis Y1, passing preferably through the centre of thecollar portion 27. Thecollar portion 27 is therefore preferably cylindrically or prismatic or parallelepiped shaped. - In different embodiments, nevertheless, the collar portion may comprise a wall differently shaped, for example shaped like a bell, and suitable to be realized by injection moulding with simple steps.
- The
water outlet circuit 25 preferably comprises adrain hose 70 arranged below thedischarge output 26. - In a preferred embodiment, the liquid withdrawn from the
tub 3 may be conveyed either to the outside or inside thesame washing tub 3. In the latter case, thewater outlet circuit 25 belongs to a recirculation circuit, not illustrated, which preferably withdraws liquid from the thelower portion 3a of thetub 3 and re-admits such a liquid into an upper region of thetub 3. - Advantageously the
laundry washing machine 1 comprises alevel sensing device 19 suited to sense (or detect) the liquid level inside thetub 3. - The
level sensing device 19 preferably comprises apressure sensor 50, or pressure switch and anair chamber 51 enclosing an air volume. - The
air chamber 51 preferably comprises afirst part 52, or lower part, and asecond part 53, in the following called also upper closing part. Thelower part 52 and theupper closing part 53 are preferably substantially cylindrically shaped. Anyway, thelower part 52 and theupper closing part 53 may have different shapes, for example they may be prismatic, parallelepiped, etc. - The
air chamber 51 advantageously communicates at one side with thedischarge outlet 26 of thetub 3 and on another side with thepressure sensor 50. - Advantageously, the
lower part 52 of theair chamber 51 communicates with thedischarge outlet 26 of thetub 3 through achamber inlet 58. Theupper closing part 53 communicates with thepressure sensor 50 through achamber outlet 59, and preferably aconduit 54, preferably narrow. - In the preferred embodiment here described, the
air chamber 51 advantageously communicates with thedischarge outlet 26 through thedrain hose 70 arranged below thedischarge outlet 26. - The
drain hose 70 preferably comprises afirst portion 71 connectable to thetub 3 at thedischarge outlet 26 and asecond portion 72 for conveying liquid to the outside and/or, if a recirculation circuit is provided, again inside thetub 3. Preferably, thesecond portion 72 comprises a flexible plastic tubing. - A
fastening device 80 is preferably provided for connecting thefirst portion 71 of thedrain hose 70 to thetub 3. - In the preferred embodiment here described, the
fastening device 80 comprises a clamp, not illustrated. - In different embodiments, nevertheless, the fastening device may be of different type. For example, a snap connection may be provided for the connection of the drain hose to the tub, or other elements like screws, etc..
- In different embodiments a gasket may be advantageously interposed between the
first portion 71 and thetub 3 in order to improve tight connection. Advantageously, at oneend 72a of thesecond portion 72 of the drain hose 70 a draining pump is connected, not shown, allows withdrawing of the liquid from thetub 3 through thedrain hose 70. - In short, the
drain hose 70 defines a liquid conveying element. - According to a first aspect of the invention, the
lower part 52 of theair chamber 51 is obtained in a single piece construction with thedrain hose 70. - The
drain hose 70 and thelower part 52 of theair chamber 51 are preferably made with a plastic material (preferably a resilient material, so that thedrain hose 70 acts also as a sealing providing also its watertight connection with the tub 3) and are preferably obtained in a single piece construction by moulding, more preferably by injection moulding. - The
drain hose 70 and thelower part 52 of theair chamber 51 therefore define a completed, integral, unitary member. - According to a main aspect of the invention, the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 is obtained in a single piece construction with thetub 3. - The
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 and thetub 3, therefore, define a completed, integral, unitary member. - More preferably, the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 is obtained in a single piece construction with the rear hemi-shell 14 oftub 3. Alternatively, theupper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 could be obtained in a single piece construction with the front hemi-shell 13 oftub 3. - In a further advantageous embodiment, the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 may be obtained partially in a single piece construction with the rear hemi-shell 14 and partially in a single piece construction with the front hemi-shell 13 oftub 3, in such a way that when the first and second hemi-shells are assembled one another for forming thetub 3, also theupper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 is assembled; also this advantageous embodiment is enclosed in the definition of anupper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 obtained in a single piece construction with thetub 3. - Preferably, the
second part 53 comprises awall 53a which surrounds a longitudinal axis Y2 of thesecond part 53, passing preferably through the centre of thesecond part 53, as illustrated inFigure 5 . - More preferably, the
second part 53 comprises awall 53a which is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis Y2. Thecollar portion 27 is, therefore, preferably cylindrically or prismatic or parallelepiped shaped. - In different advantageous embodiments, the
second part 53 may comprise a wall differently shaped, for example shaped like a bell, and suitable to be realized by injection moulding with simple steps. - The
tub 3 and theupper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 are preferably made with a plastic material and are preferably obtained by moulding, more preferably by injection moulding. - Preferably, the longitudinal axis Y1 of the
collar portion 27 is parallel to the longitudinal axis Y2 passing through the centre of thesecond part 53 of theair chamber 51. - Advantageously, moulding process of the
tub 3 andupper closing part 53 is simplified. In fact, being the longitudinal axis Y1 and Y2 parallel one another, thecollar portion 27 and thesecond part 53 may be obtained by a single slide (i.e. the moving part of the moulding device used for obtaining hollow elements transversal with respect of the main closing direction of the mould) of the moulding device adapted to be moved, during the moulding procedure, in a direction parallel to longitudinal axis Y1 and Y2; using such a single slider allows keeping the costs for the moulding device low. Asingle slide 200 adapted to be moved, during the moulding procedure, in a direction Y3 parallel to longitudinal axis Y1 and Y2, and allowing obtaining both thecollar portion 27 and thesecond part 53, is schematically illustrated inFigures 14 and 15 , in which only a small portion of thetub 3 has been shown, and in which only thesingle slide 200, and not other parts of the moulding device, are illustrated. - On the contrary, if the longitudinal axis Y1 and Y2 are not parallel one another, their moulding would require two different slides, moving respectively in the two directions defined by the two axis Y1 and Y2, and therefore the moulding device would be much more expensive.
- The
tub 3 and theupper closing part 53 are preferably connected through a connectingelement 57 preferably a rib, as better visible inFigures 5 and7 , made in a single piece construction with thetub 3 and theupper closing part 53, and which preferably extends along substantially all the entire length of theupper closing part 53. - In different advantageously embodiments, the shape and the extent of the connecting
element 57 may be different. For example, the connecting element may comprise apertures which reduce the weight of the connecting element itself. - According to the invention, when the
drain hose 70 is assembled to thetub 3, theupper closing part 53 fits on thelower part 52 thus forming theair chamber 51. In different embodiments, a gasket may be advantageously interposed between theupper closing part 53 and thelower part 52 in order to guarantee a tight connection. - As known, when the liquid rises in the
tub 3 a liquid column is also created in theair chamber 51. The liquid column applies a pressure to the air volume enclosed thereabove in theair chamber 51 and inside theconduit 54. Said pressure is then sensed by thepressure sensor 50. From the values sensed by thepressure sensor 50 it is possible to determine the liquid level L of the liquid inside thetub 3. Advantageously, the realization of thelower part 52 of theair chamber 51 as a part of thedrain hose 70 allows the detection of very low level L of the liquid inside thetub 3, preferably also a level at which thetub 3 is substantially empty, or even a level at which thetub 3 is completely empty. This is due to the fact that thedrain hose 70 is advantageously arranged below thedischarge outlet 26. More advantageously, this is due to the fact that thechamber inlet 58 is arranged below thedischarge outlet 26. - Still advantageously, as said above, the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 51 and thetub 3 define a complete, integral, unitary member. Installation of theair chamber 51 is therefore simplified since the use of fastening elements, like clamps or iron wires, to fix to theupper closing part 53 to thewashing tub 3 is completely avoided. - Manufacturing and/or assembling time and costs of the air chamber and of the machine are therefore reduced compared to the known technique.
- Risks of breakage of the fastening elements as it happens in the prior art technique, particularly due to the vibration caused by the drum revolutions, are therefore also completely avoided.
- The reliability of the laundry washing machine is therefore increased compared to the machines of known type.
- With reference to Figures from 8 to 13 a construction variant of the laundry washing machine is described.
- This laundry washing machine differs from the above described
laundry washing machine 1 for the different realization of thewater outlet circuit 125 and of theair chamber 151. - The
water outlet circuit 125 preferably comprises anintegrated drain pump 170 arranged below thedischarge output 26. - Here the
air chamber 151 preferably comprises alower part 152 and anupper closing part 53. Theupper closing part 53 is identical to the upper closing part previously described with reference to the first preferred embodiment. Thelower part 152 and theupper closing part 53 are preferably substantially cylindrical or prismatic or parallelepiped shaped. - The
air chamber 151 communicates at one side with thedischarge outlet 26 of thetub 3 and on another side with thepressure sensor 50. - Advantageously, the
lower part 152 of theair chamber 151 communicates with thedischarge outlet 26 of thetub 3 through achamber inlet 158. Theupper closing part 53 communicates with thepressure sensor 50 through achamber outlet 59 andnarrow conduit 54, as above described. - The
chamber inlet 158 is advantageously arranged below thedischarge outlet 26. As for the first embodiment, this arrangement allows the detection of very low level L of the liquid inside thetub 3, preferably also a level at which thetub 3 is substantially empty, or even a level at which thetub 3 is completely empty. - In the preferred embodiment here described, the
air chamber 151 advantageously communicates with thedischarge outlet 26 through theintegrated drain pump 170 arranged below thedischarge outlet 26. - The
integrated drain pump 170 preferably comprises afirst portion 171 connectable to thetub 3 at thedischarge outlet 26 and asecond portion 172 for conveying liquid to the outside, or again inside thetub 3 if a recirculation circuit is provided. - Preferably, the
second portion 172 comprises a plastic duct portion. - A
fastening device 180 is preferably provided for connecting thefirst portion 171 of theintegrated drain pump 170 to thetub 3. - In the preferred embodiment here described, the
fastening device 180 comprises screws, not visible, which engage withrespective seats tub 3 and of thefirst portion 171. - In different embodiments, nevertheless, the fastening device may be of different type. For example, a snap connection may be provided for the connection of the drain hose to the tub, or other elements like clamps, etc..
- In a further different embodiment, the
first portion 171 of theintegrated drain pump 170 is fixed to thetub 3 by welding. - A gasket may be advantageously interposed between the
first portion 171 and thetub 3 in order to guarantee a tight connection. - Advantageously, at one
end 172a of thesecond portion 172 a drainingpump 173 allows withdrawing of the liquid from thetub 3. - The
first portion 171, thesecond portion 172 and the drainingpump 173 form theintegrated drain pump 170. Thefirst portion 171 and thesecond portion 172 eventually define a liquid conveying element. - According to a first aspect of the invention, the
lower part 152 of theair chamber 151 is obtained in a single piece construction with theintegrated drain pump 170. Advantageously thelower part 152 of theair chamber 151 is obtained in a single piece construction with thefirst portion 171 and thesecond portion 172 of theintegrated drain pump 170. - The
first portion 171, thesecond portion 172 and thelower part 152 of theair chamber 151 are preferably made with a plastic material and are preferably obtained, preferably in a single step, by moulding, more preferably by injection moulding. - The
first portion 171, thesecond portion 172 and thelower part 152 of theair chamber 151 therefore define a completed, integral, unitary member. The same advantages above described for the previous embodiment may therefore be achieved. - According to a main aspect of the invention, the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber 151 is obtained in a single piece construction with thetub 3. As said above, theupper closing part 53 is identical to the upper closing part previously described with reference to the first preferred embodiment described with reference toFigures 1 to 7 . - According to the invention, when the
integrated drain pump 170 is assembled to thetub 3, theupper closing part 53 fits on thelower part 152 thus forming theair chamber 151. - In this embodiment of
Figures 9 to 13 , therefore, theupper closing part 53 of theair chamber 151 is obtained in a single piece construction with thetub 3, thus achieving the same advantages above described for the previous embodiment ofFigures 1 to 8 . - It should to be noted, at this point, that in the two embodiments previously described, the
tub 3 and theupper closing part 53 integrated therewith is the same. - Advantageously, therefore, the
same tub 3 may be used to assemble either a first type oflaundry washing machine 1 having adrain hose arrangement 70 or a second type of laundry washing machine having an integrateddrain pump arrangement 170. - According to the invention, therefore, the provision of the
upper closing part 53 of theair chamber tub 3 advantageously allows the assemblage of different types of laundry washing machines using the same type ofwashing tub 3 and different types of liquid conveying portions. - The production and design costs may therefore be reduced compared to known technique.
- It has thus been shown that the present invention allows all the set objects to be achieved. In particular, it makes it possible to obtain an improved liquid level sensing device arrangement in a laundry washing machine with respect to the machines of the prior art and to reduce manufacturing and/or assembling time and costs.
- While the present invention has been described with reference to particular embodiments shown in the figures, it should be noted that the present invention is not limited to the specific embodiments illustrated and described herein; on the contrary, further variants of the embodiments described herein fall within the scope of the present invention, which is defined in the claims.
