The maximum usable acceleration voltage is limited primarily by the occurring electric field strength and the resulting insulation costs. This isolation effort grows more than cubic with the voltage to be isolated.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved DC particle accelerator for accelerating a charged particle. This object is achieved by a DC particle accelerator the features of
A DC particle accelerator according to the invention for accelerating a charged particle from a source to a target comprises a first electrode assembly and a second electrode assembly separate therefrom. In this case, the first electrode arrangement and the second electrode arrangement are arranged so that the particle passes through the first electrode arrangement and the second electrode arrangement in succession. Each of the electrode arrangements is designed as a high-voltage cascade. Each of the electrode assemblies has a plurality of concentrically arranged metallic half-shells, the half-shells forming capacitor plates of the high-voltage cascade. A radially innermost half-shell of each electrode arrangement has a greater electrical potential difference with respect to a ground potential than all other half-shells of the same electrode arrangement. Advantageously, this allows a particularly compact design of the electrode arrangements.
Advantageously, with this DC particle accelerator, compared to a previously known DC particle accelerator, the particle to be accelerated has to pass twice only half the acceleration voltage in order to obtain the same final energy. As a result, the insulation effort for the isolation of the voltage applied to the electrode assemblies high voltages significantly reduced. Therefore, the DC particle accelerator according to the invention can have a significantly lower volume and be produced inexpensively. In addition, the energy storage in the electrode assemblies also reduces, thus minimizing the energy released in the event of flashovers, which also reduces potential damage. A further advantage of the DC particle accelerator according to the invention is that a higher voltage cascade with a lower number of stages is sufficient to produce the lower high voltages. Thereby reduces the internal resistance of the high-voltage cascade, resulting in a lower voltage variation in the load case.
It is expedient that a half-shell has an opening through which the particle can move. Advantageously, the particle can then be accelerated out of the electrode assembly or into the electrode assembly.

In another embodiment of the particle accelerator, the source is configured to emit a negatively charged particle. In this case, the particle accelerator has a transfer device for transferring a negatively charged particle into a positively charged particle. In one embodiment of this particle accelerator, the source is at negative electrical potential and the target is at ground potential. Advantageously, the target can be grounded in this particle accelerator, which simplifies the handling of the particle accelerator. Depending on the target used, earthing the target may also be essential.
Advantageously, the particle to be accelerated in this particle accelerator can undergo an even greater number of potential differences, thereby increasing the achievable final energy of the particle to be accelerated.

In this case, the source is in the first electrode arrangement, the deflection device in the second electrode arrangement and the target in the third electrode arrangement. The
Furthermore, the
The
