Description

  • The present Invention concerns screening for use in buildings, more particularly screening of air gaps such as below the ceiling or between walls.
The system according to the invention is designed for mounting of wind barrier, air barrier, vapor lock vapor barrier between the rafters, studs and beams in buildings in a safe and functionally correct manner. DE 297 15 391 U1 discloses an arrangement for airing in buildings comprising plastic or metal profiles to which a sheet is attached.
  • To achieve an air barrier, vapor barrier or vapor lock in buildings it is common to use prefabricated elements, such as cardboard. An example of this type of wind barriers are Isola rafting cardboard and air gap from the applicant suitable for example, to create air gaps between the ceiling and insulation. In this known solution cardboard plates in fixed sizes are used with fold lines and incisions that are folded into a plate having side edges, the edges can be placed against the rafters in a way that the plate remains in a predetermined distance from the ceiling above and thus form an air gap between roof and underlying insulation.
However, this solution is based on a fixed aperture between trusses or beams to be mounted against the elements, providing an extensive adjustment work with, for example, old buildings that are not necessarily based on fixed standards or measurements and where screening elements in a number of widths will be needed.
It is therefore a purpose of the present invention to present a barrier element for the screening and proper air sealing of air gaps and the like in buildings, which act independently of the distance between the trusses, beams or other construction items it is to be placed between. It is also a purpose to present barrier elements which in an easy and quick way are possible to install with little need for tools.
This is achieved with a device according to the attached independent claims.
The system of elements for screening for use in buildings include one or more elongated profiles or angles which are dimensioned according to the bearing, ventilation or fixing of wind barriers, vapor lock, air barrier or vapor barrier.
On the profile, or the angle, adhesive strips or sealing strips of a type of adhesive or adhesive that is designed so that materials for sheathing, vapor barrier, vapor lock or air lock can be attached to one side of the profile or the angle, and an adhesive strip / sealing strip on the part of the profile that is attached to the rafters, studs or joists to ensure an optimal installation, are applied.
  • The profile itself can also be anchored to the rafters, studs or joists with suitable adhesive to ensure proper installation and function. The profile dimension is adapted to the function and dimensions of the building components to which it is mounted.
  • The system according to the invention is suitable for use as a wind barrier against the cold side of the stub loft, ie in floors having an air barrier underneath the insulation.
  • Angular profiles will then be attached and sealed to the sides of beams, so that one of the sides of the profile is attached to one side of a beam while the other side of the profile is tangent to the lowest edge of the soffit. A similar angular profile attached, in a similar manner, to the adjacent beam in the same intermediary space on the side surface of the adjacent beam facing the first beam. One of the adhesive and / or sealing strips to be placed on the part of the profile facing the side beams. Angular profiles can also be attached with one or more fasteners or staples to the side of the beam.
  • The wind barrier in the form of a roll of sheathing or cardboard material or other sheet material is attached to the part of the profiles facing out from the beam, and which has been applied with an adhesive strip of a suitable adhesive material. Any transverse joints in the same intermediary space between continuous sheets or webs can be sealed with suitable tape or other profiles or sealants to achieve air sealing of transverse joints, so that these joints are airtight. In the transitions and/or the end of the beams, the sheathing or plate can be attached to the joists with suitable tape or other profiles or sealants to achieve air sealing of transverse joints, providing an air-tight finish. The sheathing can also be clamped to the soffit by an appropriate molding.
  • The system according to the invention is suitable for use as a wind barrier at a roof.
  • Angular profiles are in that case mounted to the sides of the rafters so that the profile with sealing strip / adhesive strip, which lies against timber is mounted flush with the upper rafters. Profiles can also be attached to the rafters with appropriate fasteners to secure anchoring. Sealing strip/ adhesive strip will be able to ensure an airtight connection of joints between the angle and roll or plate or between two sheets or rolls of sealing material.
  • The angular profile is designed so that the surface of the side that attaches to the rafters or beam side will be up against the roof and the upper edge of the rafter. The dimension of the side surface of the angular profile attached to the side of the beam, will determine the dimension of the air gap below the ceiling, as the air gap will be equivalent to the height of the side surface of the angular profile that is attached along the beam sides.
  • Wind barrier of sheathing, cardboard or other sheet material is attached to the adhesive on the side of the angles facing the center of the aperture. All transitions and joints can then be sealed with tape or other sealing material.
  • The profile can be cut and folded over to accommodate any changes in direction in the rafter construction.
  • The arrangement is also suitable for use as air barrier between the insulation layer in structures with thicker insulation.
  • By using large insulation thickness, it may be a need for an air barrier in the center of the insulation thickness between the insulation layers to prevent convection. The angular profiles are attached to the center of the stud, joists or rafters with adhesive or sealing strip against the woodwork. In addition, the profile is also attached with suitable adhesive in a suitable distance between the profile and into the wood. The sheathing for the air lock is attached to the tape side of the profile wings facing the center of the aperture between the studs, joists or rafters. Insulation on either side of the air barrier is installed in the usual way.
  • The arrangement can also be applied to the vapor lock or vapor barrier.
  • The angular profile is also suitable to solve the transitions between the vapor barrier or vapor lock to be guided between the various structural parts from ceiling to floor / wall, etc. An example is the transition, at vapor barrier or vapor lock, between the joist in the knee wall of A-trusses and vapor barrier or vapor lock on the bottom side of the undergird. Angular profiles mounted under the undergird below the joist of the knee wall. Vapor lock is guided from the knee wall and down between undergird and is attached to the vapor barrier on the underside of the undergird. The connection between the vapor barrier / vapor lock on the undergird underside and vapor barrier / vapor lock knee walls is sealed with suitable adhesive / fastening means.
  • The angular profile is also suitable for use as a connection / air sealing between a cold attic and wind barrier on the wall, also called raft. The angular profiles vertical portion attached to the beam side up towards the ceiling to form an air gap between the ceiling and insulation so that air can pass from the outside into the cold attic. The angular profile is bent/cut so that the profile can be attached to the beam side vertically and against or towards the top beam. Wind barrier of sheathing, board, paperboard or cardboard is attached to the wings of the angular profile facing the light opening between the rafters. The part of the wind barrier that goes outwards or against the top beam is sealed over the wall sheathing with clamp joist, optionally tape. Alternatively, an angular profile, that is attached to the outer edge of the top beam, to which the wind barrier is fixed, is used.
  • The arrangement according to the invention will now be described using the attached figures which show some examples of embodiments of the Invention.
    • Figure 1 shows a device for an air gap in accordance with the prior art.
    • Figure 2 shows the application of the device for an air gap according to the prior art by attachment to the beams.

    • Figure 9 shows a perspective outline of a roof partially equipped with air gap, as seen from outside.
    • Figure 10 shows a perspective outline of a roof partially equipped with air gap, seen from the inside.
    • Fig 11 and 12 shows an example of an arrangement in the floor.
  • Figure 1 shows the structure for the air gap with a raft cardboard according to the prior art. It is known to use cardboard plates precut with notched edges and folds as shown in Fig. 1. The plates are available in standard widths according to building standards for the beam spacings they are to be applied in, such as 60 and 80 cm wide. The length is also standardized, but the material is easily cut at the end of an air gap arrangement.
  • Figure 2 shows the application of the device for air gap according to the prior art by attachment to the beams. When installing the devices, a number of cardboard plates will be placed edge-to-edge along the length of the projected air gap. The length of the side tabs that are folded for attachment to the side beams, trusses or the like, will dimension the width of the air gap.
  • Figure 3 shows the application of the device for air gap according to the prior art at rooster beam. At the direction transitions, such as below the rooster beam, you can cut in the side tabs and customize the plate by folding as shown in Fig. 3.
  • When using the shown devices for mounting the air gap, a number of cardboard plates will be placed edge-to-edge. It is therefore necessary to seal the joints between all the required cardboard plates. Figure 4 shows the sealing of joints between two such air gap devices. Over the length of an air gap, there will be a number of such taped seams or overlaps with the tape between the layers.
  • Fig 5 and 6 show a first and a second embodiment of an angular profile 1 to apply to an air gap arrangement according to the invention. The angular profile 1 comprises two elongated, mainly flat assembly parts 2, where the surfaces are suitable for fastening of adhesives. An adhesive part or sealing strip 3 will be attached to the side of the profile to be attached to the beam, joist or rafter side and the adhesive part / sealing strip 3 will be attached to the side of the profile where the sheathing material is to be fixed. By putting the adhesive on one side or the other side of the mounting part 2, the flexibility in the use and sizing of the air gap when mounting the profile, and the subsequent installation of the sealant, will be very good.
  • Figure 7 shows a perspective outline of a building with an arrangement for beams and air gaps according to the Invention partially assembled. On the side surface of the beams or trusses between the air gap, fixed angular profiles should be organized. The profiles can be cut and bent for any changes in the angle of the air gap. Thus, one may at a roof be able to arrange the first part of the angular profile mainly vertical with a predominantly vertical fastening element. Then, angular profiles will be arranged in the longitudinal direction of the beams or trusses on both sides of a space where an air gap is to be arranged. When two angular profiles are attached along the entire length of the future air gap, one or more air and moisture preventing plates or membranes are attached between the two angular profiles, so that the space is restricted. The air and moisture preventing plates or membranes may be of a rigid, semi rigid or flexible material, but it is advantageous to use a flexible material that can be brought to the construction site in the form of rolls and be rolled onto the adhesive on the angular profile. By using such material in rolls, you will obtain far fewer joints to seal than is necessary with plates according to the prior art, which simplifies the assembly process and increases the air/moisture proofing and lifetime of the air gap.
  • Suitable materials for said plates or membranes in the arrangement are cardboard, plastic, fiber plastics, mats of synthetic or natural material or otherwise. The profiles are made of cardboard.
  • Figure 8 shows a perspective outline of a building with the arrangement of air vents in Figure 7 viewed from within the building. It is advantageous to put the membranes onto the mounting element on the angular profile so that the angular profile is visible on the side of the membrane where the air gap is situated, but the opposite may of course also be done if this is desirable. Insulation material can then be added towards the sealing membrane on the other side in relation to the air gap. In the example shown, the
Figure 9 shows a perspective outline of a roof partially equipped with air gap. The mounting element of the profiles that lie against the trusses may advantageously be flush with the surface of the trusses so that the width of the mounting element defines the width of the air gap. However, it is obvious that by shifting the angular profiles, one will be able to change the size of the air gap, so this could be adapted to every need, even with a limited range of dimensions of the angular profiles. When the angular profiles are attached and the membranes mounted on the angular profiles, a roof can be laid over the membrane. However, the arrangement according to the Invention is mainly used for installation after the roof is installed. Figure 10 shows a roof during installation seen from the inside, where each light aperture shows a step in the assembly process. Aperture A and B shows the openings in the ceiling for insulation, that is, with exposed ceiling. On the rafters are fitted angular profiles with the adhesive side turning away from the ceiling, in this case down, so that the adhesive is easily accessible from the inside of the roof.
  • Aperture D shows how the barrier layer in the form of a roll of barrier material is rolled onto the angular profiles. The blocking material shall be waterproof, but vapor permeable and may advantageously be a fiber sheet in a breathing material. It is desired that the liner has a certain kind of bending stiffness, so that it does not collapse before it is attached to the adhesive on the angular profiles. Aperture C shows how the insulating material easily can be mounted to block the material after it is attached to the angular profiles.
  • An advantage of the rigid angular profiles with a mounting part with adhesive means is that the mounting part to a certain extent will affect support for the insulation material and the bearing of the barrier material, which could simplify the installation work.
  • The arrangement according to the Invention may also be used in walls and floors. Fig 11 and 12 shows an example of an arrangement in the floor. The assembly takes place in the same manner as above, first angular profiles are mounted to the sidewalls of the beams between which the air vents are to be arranged, then the membrane is attached to the angular profiles in an airtight manner, then insulation material, e.g. in the form of insulation mats may be laid over the membrane which eventually is covered by the flooring material, e.g. floor slabs or similar. The air gap will here be on the underside of the floor construction to the underlying space. Here it is advantageous to use tape for attaching the wind barrier in addition to sealing.
  • The angular profile system provides a flexible and secure air sealing of the building or structure. The system is designed to meet the requirement for airproofing of buildings, which have become stricter in new regulations, and which are likely to be further increased in the future.
  • The system provides flexibility in adapting to the distance between joists, rafters and floor structures. Plates, sheets or membranes are adapted to the light opening between the profiles.
  • Adhesion Materials or sealing strips against joists, beams or rafters ensure an air sealing between the profile and the wood structure. A suitable adhesive (cramp, screws or nails) may with advantage also be fixed at regular intervals between the profile and wood in order to further ensure lasting adhesion / sealing.
One can also imagine that the angular profiles can be attached to the joists, beams or rafters towards or against the membrane using Velcro fastening means. By fixing the membrane in this way one can imagine that the "hook material" is attached to the membrane while the angular profile is provided in a material that will adhere to such a hook material. When connecting to the joists, etc., one may in a common manner, attach a ribbon to the joists or the like and the corresponding material to the angular profile.
  • The angular profiles are fairly rigid in order to ensure a tight coupling to the beam sides and to give some support to the barrier material and insulation mats. They are made of cardboard that can advantageously be strengthened with for example a plastic material.
  • It is shown an arrangement and a procedure for the provision of air gaps in existing buildings and new constructions. The arrangement with angular profiles and barrier materials can be mounted easily, safely and quickly. Since such gaps often are installed in hard to reach places like below the ridge of the attic or undergird, it will be of great advantage to have a simplified procedure that saves time and can reduce the risk of accidents, such as falls, in that the assembly can be done faster and with fewer operations. The system also provides greater a security for achieving an adequate regulatory airtight construction that provides a predictable optimal u-value which in turn saves energy.
Furthermore, the Invention provides a more stable structure in that the angular profiles can provide additional support and partly to the barrier material in the form of a sheet or similar between the angular profiles, and partly for insulation mats placed on the barrier material or against the angular profiles, i.e. a roof.
