Description

Drilling head for printed circuit boards
DESCRIPTION Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a drilling head for printed circuit boards.
More specifically, the invention relates to a drilling head, which can be incorporated into a drilling machine for printed circuit boards. Background information and Prior A rt
Printed circuit boards are made of epoxy resin reinforced with glass fiber coated with a layer of copper, which is then photo-etched according to the circuit to achieve. The boards are drilled in a series of positions to allow the connection between points in the electrical circuit on both sides of the plate and to insert any discrete or integrated electronic components.
Machining printed circuit boards requires more and more machines which can operate with high flexibility and productivity. For this purpose a range of drilling heads has been proposed in the past on drilling machines, typically equipped with six drilling heads, designed to simultaneously drill a corresponding stack of circuit boards.
The stack of boards is usually obtained by stacking a number of identical boards on a backup panel in Bakelite or cardboard and covering the stack with a thin aluminum foil or similar entry material. The stack is held together and placed on the tooling plate of the machine by means of 2 reference pins. The current drilling machine for printed circuit boards generally comprise a table translating along a first direction (Y axis), a cart translating along a second direction (X axis) orthogonal to the first which bears several drilling heads which can move along a third direction (Z axis) perpendicular to the first two.
In general, a drilling head of prior art comprises a linear or rotary motor that gives motion to the head along the Z axis, a flexible coupling, a linear guide or pneumostatic bushing, guiding the drilling head along the Z axis, a spindle carrying a drilling tool, usually driven by asynchronous motor and a pressure foot, usually consisting of a pneumatic system that applies a force to the stack of circuit boards, as close as possible to the point where the drilling occurs.
In prior art these different parts of the drilling head, once assembled, are heavy and bulky items, making the conventional machine massive.
Furthermore the high count of mechanical couplings between the various parts of existing machines lead to difficulties in installation and maintenance, significantly impairing performance. As known, in fact, in the drilling of printed circuit plates, the performance in terms of acceleration along the Z axis provides the greatest contribution to overall productivity of the machine.
The purpose of the invention is to create a drilling head for printed circuit boards that overcomes the drawbacks of the prior art and thus more efficient and productive compared to heads currently in use.
A further aim of the invention is to provide a drilling head of that type, that is easy and economical and can therefore be produced industrially at a lowest cost.
Description of Invention
These and other aims are achieved with the drilling head for printed circuit boards, as claimed in the following claims.
Advantageously, according to the invention, thanks to the usage of two symmetric linear motors including matching windings arranged at 180° and fixed to the spindle structure and thanks to the application of permanent magnets it is possible to generate a resultant force from the magnetic field coincident with the rotational axis of the spindle, thereby clearly improving the accuracy of operation of the drilling head.
More advantages derived from the compactness and simplicity of construction can be obtained with the arrangement of the invention.
Not the least advantage of the invention derives from the remarkable ease of disassemble and replacement of the spindle, which, being the part most subject to stress, must in fact be easily accessible and quickly dismantled. Description of Figures
One form of implementation of the drilling head according to the invention will be described below, merely for example, with reference to the attached figures in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of the drilling head according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a front section view along a vertical plane of the drilling head of Figure 1 ;
— Figure 3 is a plan view from above of the drilling head of Figure 1 without spindle;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the pressure foot.
Description of the preferred embodiment
With reference to the attached figures, the drilling head according to the invention, which is indicated as a whole by reference 11, includes a central body 13 which is associated with a drilling spindle 15, for example driven by an AC motor at high frequency, moving along the direction of "Z" with respect to the body 13 by means of an appropriate pneumostatic bushing 41 and bearing a drilling tool 17.
According to the invention, the spindle 15 is associated with the body 13 through the pneumostatic bushing 41 and is moved along the axis "Z" by a pair of linear motor 19a, 19b, each with a corresponding coil assembly 21a, 21b, equipped with corresponding winding 23a, 23b, and magnet assembly 25a, 25b fixed to the central body 13 and equipped with corresponding channels of permanent magnets 27a, 27b formed of four magnets per motor orientated by purpose.
Preferably, according to the invention, the linear motors 19a, 19b have equal power and are arranged symmetrically at 180° to the axis "Z" of the drilling head 1 1. With this arrangement of coils and magnetic channels the resultant force is coincident with the rotational axis of the spindle, thereby clearly improving the precision of operation of the drilling head.
Each coil assembly 21a, 21b is associated with a corresponding pair of rods 29a, 29b by means of an intermediate item 31a, 31b made of aluminum, that joins two rods in the central part of the each pair. The rods 29a, 29b are also associated to the body 13 in such a way that they can slide, running parallel to Z, by matching pairs of high precision ball bushing 33, which guarantee an optimal motion with low friction. The intermediate items 31a, 31b attached to respective pairs of rods 29a, 29b define with them a corresponding sledge independently driving the spindle 15 and, advantageously, the usage of two symmetrically identical sledges according to the invention involves the transfer of motion to the spindle 15, in absence of components perpendicular to the axis "Z", favoring optimal guide within the pneumostatic bushing 41.
The lower end of the four rods 29a, 29b is associated with a pressure foot 35 which includes a vacuum pipe 37 to evacuate the chips. The motion between pressure foot 35 and spindle 15 is achieved by four pistons 39a, 39b incorporated in the same pressure foot 35 and whose lower ends of rods 29a, 29b constitute the moving parts inside the piston chamber 41a, 41b cut into the body of pressure foot.
With this layout and thanks to the fact that the rods 29a, 29b are hollow to let compressed air flow, the air supply tubes to the pressure foot are therefore eliminated, eliminating the risks associated with their failure for excessive wear.
According to the invention, the adjustable load of the pressure foot 35 is produced by two of the four opposed pistons 39a, 39b, while the movement of pressure foot 35 toward the spindle 15, for example to check tool height and diameter, is obtained by the other two opposed pistons.
A pneumostatic bushing 41 is also installed in body 13 for guiding the sliding movement axially along the Z axis of the spindle 15, while a flange 43 is fixed to the base of the spindle 15 to ensure that the pressure foot chamber is held at negative pressure.
Pneumostatic bushing 41 provides almost total absence of friction, excellent accuracy and repeatability of positioning. Advantageously, according to the invention, the stiffness in the radial direction of the sleeve pneumostatic is much higher than the stiffness of the two opposing sledges, thanks to this solution, the sledges adapt elastically to the movement of the mandrel 15 in the bushing 41 that guides the movement in axial direction.
A linear transducer is planned or to control the position of the spindle 15 along the Z axis Advantageously, the linear transducer is preferably mounted on one side of the body 13 and cooperates with a fixed reader, thereby avoiding mobile laying cables.
