Definitions

  • This invention relates to gas burners and to gas fires and stoves which incorporate such burners.
  • Gas fires and stoves typically incorporate a burner unit comprising a plenum chamber which has connected to it a venturi from which gas/air combustion mixture is supplied to said chamber.
  • the venturi receives air from the atmosphere and gas through a supply pipe.
  • the plenum, or mixing, chamber comprises a perforated metal top plate having apertures through which the fuel and air mixture passes upwardly to a combustion chamber (in a closed type fire), where it is ignited and burned.
  • radiant, e.g. ceramic, bodies are disposed on the metal aperture plate in order to give a pleasing 'real fire' effect.
  • the burner is manufactured and supplied as a unit - its component parts, for example, welded or riveted together - for fitting into the housing of the fire or stove.
  • the burner unit is fixed to the floor of the fire or stove with screws or bolts.
  • a burner unit of appropriate size and shape is provided for each model and size of fire or stove. Burner units specific to each of the myriad models and sizes of fires and stoves on the market must therefore be separately manufactured and stocked. Furthermore, it is necessary to completely dismantle the unit from the fire for maintenance and servicing.
  • the present invention provides a gas burner assembly for a gas fire or stove, said gas burner assembly comprising a burner base and one or more top burners supported on the burner base, said burner base housing one or more venturis which receive fuel through a supply pipe and air from within the fire, and said top burners each comprising a premix chamber which receives fuel and air mixture from a venturi and transmits said mixture into a combustion chamber through apertures in the upper surface of the premix chamber, characterised in that the top burner is removable from the burner base.
  • the top burner is located on the burner base such that fuel and air are delivered via the venturi to the premix chamber of the top burner and distributed to the apertures of the upper surface of the premix chamber, through which the fuel and air mixture passes up into the combustion chamber where it is ignited and burned.
  • the top burner may engage with pins or lugs on the burner base to ensure correct placement and a proper seal.
  • the top burner may be fixed to the burner base with screws or bolts for security, or it may simply rest in place under its own weight.
  • the top burner is removable from the burner base i.e. the top burner is not integral with, or permanently fixed to, the burner base, as is the case with known burner units.
  • a burner base of common design may be provided to which top burners of varying size and design may be fitted. It is only necessary that the part of the bottom face of the top burner that locates on the burner base is adapted to co-operate with the upper face of the burner base with which it engages. In this way, production and stock control are simplified because it is only necessary to manufacture and stock one common design of burner base together with a range of interchangeable top burners.
  • the burner base described herein may be used in fires or stoves of any model or size in conjunction with the appropriate top burner.
  • the burner assembly of the invention can accommodate top burners of different shapes, for example: round tube top burners which are generally cylindrical in shape, disposed horizontally, with apertures arranged along the upper curved surface; or rectangular top burners which are generally rectangular, flat boxes whose upper surface is formed of a perforated metal plate ("top plate").
  • top burner is generally trapezoid in cross section, as illustrated in Figure 6 . Together with internal reinforcement, this shape provides superior strength which can resist thermal distortion (arching) which can otherwise occur - particularly on long burners - during operation as a result of temperature gradients along the burner.
  • the top burner may be readily removed from the burner base, affording easy access to both parts.
  • the top burner may be removed for maintenance and refitting or, if necessary, it can be replaced.
  • the top burner can be replaced with another of a different size or design according to the heat output or visual effect desired. If the base unit is fitted with more than one top burner, e.g. two burners of different sizes, they may be readily swopped for a different visual effect. Because it is not necessary to completely dismantle the burner unit for servicing, it may not be necessary to disconnect the gas supply.
  • Removal of the top burner(s) also provides access to the burner base for maintenance thereof or, for example, to exchange the gas injectors in order to convert the fire to a different fuel (e.g. natural gas, propane, methane, butane or LPG).
  • a different fuel e.g. natural gas, propane, methane, butane or LPG.
  • the burner assembly of the invention is particularly suited for fitting in room sealed (closed type) appliances where the air for combustion is delivered from the available air inside the fire which is, in turn, drawn from outside the building via a concentric flue pipe on an external wall e.g. in a balanced flue system.
  • the burner base and top burners are designed to be used together. However, since the idea is to provide multiple, interchangeable top burners which can be fitted on a common base, it is envisaged that the burner base and top burners may be manufactured and sold separately.
  • the invention also provides each of:
  • the invention further provides a fire or stove comprising a gas burner assembly according to claim 1.
  • the gas burner assembly shown in the drawings is for use in a gas fire the fuel of which is natural gas, propane, methane, butane or LPG.
  • the detailed design may be varied while maintaining the principle of a common burner base which is adapted to co-operate with any one (or two or more) of a range of removable, interchangeable top burners of varying size and/or design.
  • the burner assembly of the invention comprises a common burner base (1) and one or more removable top burners (6) fixed to the base by locating pins or screws (2).
  • the common burner base may conveniently be manufactured in two parts: a top part (4) and a bottom part (5).
  • the top part (4) incorporates the burner location/positioning and the air inlet port for the venturi (7).
  • the bottom part (5) incorporates the pilot light assembly (3) and locating holes for fixing the burner to the base of the fire or stove.
  • the venturi receives fuel through a supply pipe and air from the available air within the fire.
  • the fuel/air mixture is transmitted to the premix chamber of the top burner where it is mixed further and distributed.
  • the fuel/air mixture passes through apertures in the perforated cover plate of the top burner into the combustion chamber where it is ignited by the pilot burner in known manner.
  • venturi is shown manufactured as part of the top burner which projects from the lower surface of the top burner so that when the burner assembly is assembled for use, the venturi is housed within the burner base.
  • the venturi may be provided as part of the burner base.
  • the top burner may further comprise, in known manner, a layer of flame trap material through which the fuel/air mixture must pass to enter the combustion chamber.
  • the flame trap material may be, for example, a stainless steel twill-weave gauze or mesh as disclosed in GB 1 504 138 , or a ceramic lattice material as disclosed in GB 2 310 276 A .
  • the combustion chamber may contain radiants representing a coal or wood fire so that the method of combustion is such as to give a 'real fire' effect.
